So I've surveyed the upcoming games releases for 2011 and it seems that PS3 is taking a giant steaming dump on 360.

Im thinking about picking up a PS3 this week.

But I dont want to spend a few hunge if these will be outdated in 12 months.

Im searching around, but can't find any recent info on potential PS4s or Xbox 720s. I guess this means they are a long way off, but more of you would be in the know than I.

Interestingly all the articles on the 1st page of google of a 'next gen consoles' search yields articles no more recent than mid-2009.

It seems people know they are so far off, even speculating is pointless.

Is this correct?

The next nintendo home console will be unveiled at next years E3 I've heard.
Microsoft obviously aren't planning anything soon since they've released Kinect and Sony are releasing the PSP 2 next year, or is it they year after, hmm.

Wasn't the Kinect the Xbox 720?
No.

Also hard to judge upcoming titles when not many have really been announced. E3, CES and so on will bring a lot of game announcements but even this year was pretty poor for quality titles.

IF Nintendo announce a new console it won't be considered in the 'next-gen' area since it'll be Nintendo just catching up to the quality of console that PS3/360 have by making it HD and getting all the hardcore games over and making it a more accessible console for 3rd party companies and the hardcore gamer audience.

FWIW there was a game announced at the VGA's (Insane, that is the title name btw) that was announced for a 2013 release on PS3 and 360 so you can be assured that these consoles will be around and focussing on games until at least then.

My prediction would be 2014-2015 when the new generation of consoles are brought out, more than likely 2015 as there's still plenty of juice left in titles that can be brought out.

Ah, OK. I must have been mistaken. :(

Indeed, I believe it is just an extension of the platform. Supposedly support will come for Kinect for PC in the future which will be interesting. Essentially, it's the Xbox's PS Move or the Wii's Motion plus i guess.

who are the furies?

I'm not a huge tech person, but there is a big difference between the late 90's and early 2000's, compared to now.

Usually, you would hear about/see a new console within 5 years or so years (PS1, 1995 - PS2, 2001 - PS3, 2006)...

However, we are now progressing into a different world in console gaming. We are now in a world where game patches, game updates, console SKU's, HDD upgrades, software updates, ect; are becoming the norm.

The PS3 has been on the market for almost 5 years now (yes, it seems so quick doesn't it?) - the 360 almost 6 years! Yet, we haven't seen any signs of a dramatic price cut, or a need for better hardware/technology. Most of the consoles are still around the $400 price range, the PS2 was around $200 by it's 3rd year. (aha, had to dig for that one, was only 13-14 back then to even notice!)

The ability to download games online is another feature that will only continue the trend of today's consoles as a top selling market.

These days, if we want more storage memory, we buy a new HDD for $60. If we find bugs in our games/hardware, the devs of the game or the creators of the console will release a patch. If we want more out of a game, we can buy content online. If we want to increase the playability of each game, we'll go online multiplayer. If we aren't used to a price point of the current game consoles, we have other SKU's (versions of the console which vary in HDD size and features) to choose from.

You see, the online world has completely transformed the longevity of hardware these days. Especially consoles. Instead of releasing a new console, both MS and Sony release an "add on" to their current one, such as motion gaming, different features of the same console, extra hardware, ect;

The advancement of technology has been quite good too... we have still yet to tap into the full capabilities of the both consoles, and we probably won't for a few years still. The games will look better and better because there is so much potential in these consoles compared to the consoles of the past.

In fact, game developing is taking longer than usual nowadays, because the technology is so hard to figure out. And the longer the games take to develop, the longer the consoles will be on the market. An example of this is that we are only into the PS3's third wave of first party titles, yet it's been out there for 5 years.

I could bring up the Blu-ray as a medium that will save developers of PS3 games from needing more disc-space/creating multiple dics for games... but we'll have to wait and see with that one. I have a feeling Blu-ray will come in handy in a few years when games really start pushing the hardware and continue to do so from that point on. Blu-ray now cementing itself as the only HD movie platform in today's world also helps this case.

Another important thing to point out is how difficult it would be to create a new console and sustain it in today's world. It would be dwarfed by the already powerful consoles, with it's many titles and growing. To build a new console, you must have the dedication to go through a slump period before you see any success, and to have other consoles yet to hit their prime (with hundreds of titles already attached to them, and still growing) around yours, it would only put you down even more. You'd have to have an exclusive deal with 80% of the third party developers to make any ground, in today's mult-platform world, branding and building ground is more useful than anything else.

Due to the world being different these days, the consoles will reflect that. It's more about building on what you already have with quick fixes, rather than going from step to step, like we used to.

http://bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=651535The also need to make sure that both run properly, MS don't want another RROD fiasco on their hands, that alone has cost them more than it's needed to. The whole issue started because MS wanted to get their system out before Sony.
Oh, so it's like a fantasy football team, haha, I thought it was a real sports team lol.

Yeah, we pwn fantasy world.

The PSP2 will be out for Christmas next year

I'm sure most of you have seen the rumours floating around on the net about its processor, and if its true, wow!

2013- 2014 would be likely for the next gen for home consoles

The prices on PS3's are so cheap right now that it would be worth getting one without any qualms. There are all the old classics so far (COD 4, Uncharted, GOW) plus whats to come next year

You would get value for money even if they brought the next gen to us in 2012

Go for it

Just picked one up. Got uncharted 2 and God of War 3. Looking to trade in a bunch of 360 games for Killzone 2, resistance 2 and infamous.

Also,, I forgot to ask EB but should I get a warranty? PS3s are fairly reliable, yes?

My PS3 died last week:(

it barely lasted longer than my first 360. Meanwhile my PS2 is still going strong. They just don't make them like they used too:rolleyes:

overall though the PS3 has a better build quality than the 360 and the new slim doesn't heat up as much apparantly

They have a 16% failure rate according to a study undertaken last year.
