I think anyone who has been watching the u19 WC will agree that Callum Vidler is definitely one to keep an eye on in the coming years. Bowls mid 140's already, swings it a lot, very accurate short ball. Has all the tools.

Couple good performances from the bats too, Weibgen, Dixon, Konstas with a ton just now. A little more reluctant to get super hyped over batsman at this level than the bowlers that look a class above the rest though.

I haven't had the chance to watch him. Can anyone comment on his control of his line? Is he a bit wild in the mould of Starc?

Can be a little erratic, and tends to get a little impatient at times and starts dropping a bit short more often than he needs, but that's to be expected from an 18 year old bowling 140+. Gets some incredibly late swing going at times when he goes full. Bics will look after him well at Qld Cricket 👌

This could be one of our strongest ever U19 groups of talent from my watching (have watched all the way back to Henriques, Hazlewood and Hughes etc).

Dixon, Konstas, Beardman, Anderson, Vidler, Peake (17yo), Weibgen to my eye all look like top end players.

Appreciate the update. As someone who isn't too familiar with the U19 team I really only know Konstas since he has played some Shield. Would you say he is the most advanced, or are any of the others in line to play FC this year?

Hard to say how strong all the other states second XIs are to be honest I don't watch that level, but Dixon is equally as advanced as Konstas.

Vidler could probably play shield now and do damage.

Hoping Vidler gets a game for the Qld 2nds starting on the 22nd. Hasn't played any 4 day cricket so I wouldn't expect them to fast track him in to the shield side just yet. Unfortunately Qld's last two One Day Cup matches are early this month so I think he will still be in SA when they play those, would have loved to see him get a crack.

Scary thing with Vidler is he's all action, and has a kids body. Even his run-up is slow, uneven and provides minimal forward momentum.
With a proper sports program (weights and running) if he could add power and running speed to his bowling he could quite easily move into that 150 plus territory.

Xavier Bartlett was brilliant in his international debut against the WI. Figure of 4/17 in 9 overs on a pretty flat track.

Very impressive. Yes it was with a white ball, which does seem to move a tad more than the red. But looked the goods. Physically has all the attributes. Love the good old tight right arm overs who can swing the ball away from the right hander just a tad to draw that edge.

Reminded me of a taller Ryan Harris.

Red ball moves more and for much longer generally (speaking as someone who has used both).

It’s a strong group for sure, really enjoying this wc and rapt to see Konstas finally on the board.

I know it’s hard to say at this age but who out of the group do you think has the most red ball potential?

Anderson looks like a josh hazlewood clone.also can bat which is handy. He and dixon to my eye look next level super stars.

We've collectively struggled to get talented players from Aus U19s level into being consistent Shield performers

Seems to take players til their mid to late 20s to mature enough to cope with the level

Even looking around premier club cricket ranks, it's often the old hands and wily veterans still churning out the runs & wickets

I don't have any answers

It's why when an early 20s player does flash eg Pucovski it's genuinely exciting

I think you're over simplifying.

Green, Pucovski and Murphy have come through young in recent times.
The test team has been dominant so hard to break in, and policy would be to extract wins now.
As Starc, Smith, Hazlewood, Lyon, Khawaja come to the end there's going to be a period of transition where younger players will get that chance.

Which generation takes it?

The late 20s players or recent u19 graduates.

I'm talking Shield cricket, let alone test cricket

Those three names (are there many others?) highlight the point. There's been so few over the years and it's so rare that they were in the test team very quickly

Not sure that's such a bad thing though. Players peak around that late 20s age.
You can only have so many young players in the test side at once because naturally they won't dominate.
I understand the point of not starting in the team until mid 20s but it's worked fine in the modern era.

See Labuschagne, Head, Carey, Khawaja etc.

I'm not talking about the test team

I'm talking about this current batch of Aus U19s progressing to Shield cricket

The Jason Sangha's of the modern era

For whatever reason, the most talented of that crop either don't make Shield for 8+ years or do and struggle and are then dropped

The odd one gets through but too few and that's why our whole test team is 30+ and the nearest replacements (Boland, Harris, Bancroft) are similar age

Many of them for whatever reason struggle at shield level. Development might not be what it once was.
Or its a mentality problem - they're accustomed to dominating in juniors but can't take that mindset into the shield.
Not unlike AFL where juniors dominate with their size.

Severe decline in depth and senior playing numbers in the bottom two tiers of the pyramid must lead to a decline in FC level. My observations of Vic Premier Cricket is that the depth is simply not there which means the standard drops and the gaps to the next level get bigger.

As an example my clubs 2nd XI managed to win outright recently after trailing in the 1st Innings. For many it was only there second ever two day game. To see them return home totally pumped after pulling off a heist was the best thing about the season so far. No amount of training can substitute for real match day experience.

Two many clubs too much shit cricket

I agree with this. Time in the middle is far more valuable than any amount of time spent in the nets.

I would like to know why Carey and Johnson aren't playing Sheffield Shield this weekend. Carey could do with some batting time in the middle and Steve Johnson came back and played a T20 final for his local club last Sunday. Are we to deduce that Johnson is unable to bowl more than 4 overs in an innings?

100% agree

Spencer Johnson has been called into the ODI squad.
