going thru some personal effects of my mothers (she passed away several years ago) and came across a small medallion, seemingly won/earned by her father.

he served in the 16th battalion of the AIF (Australian Imperial Forces) for the entire 1st world war, including time at gallipoli & the western front.

while in france, during 1918, he played in a competition of 'australian rules' and from the inscription on the medallion, was awarded best player in the grand final game. when i get a chance i will take a photo and add the picture here.

the photo above i found online, showing what i assume is the winning team. currently searching for a photo of him of that vintage to confirm he is in the photo.

edit : have established he is backrow, 4th from left

anyone else got any other obscure footy related family items to share ?
maybe war related.

if you're interested there's a bloke that made a job for himself by writing books about the various batallions in australian army history. I got the one associated with my grandfather's batallion and used it to provide background for the information that i had about my grandfather. For example, if his war record said that he got injured on may 2nd, then I could look in the book and find out what the batallion was doing at that time...

I cant remember the author's name but there are probably other guys who wrote books about the 16th.....and they would all have photos in them..

good luck

Hey vj,

There's a bloke who posts here a bit, whose name I can't recall.

I believe he has a special computer...special because out of 108 keys on it, 175 are caps locks.

Whilst I'm dubious he'd be keen to part with any of them, mate I just point out it is Christmas.

Nice story about your grandpa btw :)

Any chance you could scan the medallion and post pic, at your leisure.:thumbsu:

bump

finally found, on this anniversary, more info.

http://static.awm.gov.au/images/collection/bundled/RCDIG1004835.pdf

a war diary from his unit the 16th. from october 1918. his name is N.S. Cameron

makes several mentions, namely his involvement in the footy games against the other battalions etc.

ive tied to scan/photo the medallion but the inscription is just too faint. will keep trying things.

** did LOL at the mentions of soccer...even back then
