So if NM bid at #1 what does that mean for the rest of the draft and potentially next year's #1 pick

Too early to tell.

We could trade a pick next year forward into this year, or trade out a player (Cox, Sier, etc.) or even land some sort of Free Agency compensation via Josh Thomas.

Also, last year the AFL made it so you could stockpile draft picks to make up points, whereas in the past you could only attribute the amount of points from how many list spots you had available. Don't know if they've announced where this rule sits for this year.

So, anyone going to try and guess the logic behind signing for 4 years straight up?

Clearly it’s to set him some expectations.

Because he doesn’t have enough

Depends on what picks we have to use in the draft to match. A couple of quirks/rules that apply here are:

1. We get a 20% discount. So pick 1 I think is 3000 points, so we need 2400 points to match.

2. The number of picks we can use to match the bid is limited to the number of list spots we have available. So if we go into the draft with 4 list spots available then we can use the first 4 picks we have. If our fifth selection is worth points but we only have 4 list spots the fifth pick cannot be used. This does not mean we have to fill all available list spots in the draft if we have to use that many selections to cover the Daicos bid.

3. If we don’t have enough points this year we can go into deficit the following year. My understanding is that however much the deficit is is deducted from the effected pick and the pick slides back in the draft the following year to reflect it’s new value. As I understand it the pick effected is based on where the bid comes. So if we go into deficit matching Daicos in round 1 it’s our 2022 round 1 selection that’s effected. However if we go into deficit matching Dib in a round 3 bid then it’s our 2022 round 3 selection that is affected. I have no idea how trading affects or is affected by this.

4. You must use your next selection to match the bid. If that selection does not have enough points then you must use that plus the next selection after that one. So say we trade with Adelaide to get pick 4. If North bid on Daicos at pick 1 we must use pick 4 to match. If we some how manage to get picks 20 and 24 through the trade period and these are our first two selections in the draft, we must use 20 to match the bid and if that doesn’t have enough points then we must use pick 24 as well. If the combination of picks used are worth more than the points required then we will get a later pick back based on the value of the difference.

I hope this all makes sense.

You're assuming the power in that negotiation lay with the club, not so sure... maybe Nick says "gimme 4 or I'll take my chances in the draft"...??;)

Could very well be. Nick has been seeding these negotiations for a very long time …

Will have to get a few gorillas on him for the Rising Star in 2022!!

I’d like to think that we’ll create a crowded market for the Rising Star in 2022.

Nick has given his colleagues a 12 month head start.
