Home from the game.

Nick had an alright game. Not as clean and polished as the last few weeks. Rushed kicks and disposal in the 2nd half, but still head and shoulders too good for this level.

Was chatting to a guy from AFL Draft Central who was there covering the game.

Nick probably should have had about 5 goals, but missed some easy shots. The one off the ground like soccer, that would have been a nice goal but went the other way. Then a couple further out. If he had a bit more composure to slot them properly. He should take some notes from Josh lol

But one thing for sure. He knows how to find the ball and out of a pack, stoppage or in the middle. Would have had about 30 I assume, seemed to have his fair share.

The Game was pretty much over in 2nd Half so maybe he went back a Gear or 2 and Cruised a bit.

Still looks like a Class Above

You seem to have an opinion on it too. Have you sent them your cv?

Pretty interesting discussion board if we just go, we'll the club did it, their the experts, they must be right.

Also a pretty interesting off season for a group of unquestionable experts.
I have an open mind and disagree with a lot of what they are doing. But I also acknowledge that I don’t know what they have mapped out and I don’t the talent/draft prospects as I would expect they would know.
So I don’t bang on about how exchanging a draft pick has such a low probability of success and if it works out it’s all luck! It’s not as straight forward as you make it out to be.
So many variables even keeping that pick including:
1. Where we are projected to finish on the ladder;
2. What we are likely to get for that pick next year with clubs knowing we need to trade it;
3. Is there a player at another club we are confident in using the pick to trade?
4. Points we are going to need to secure Daicos and so unless we can get a potential top 10 pick + points for 2022 will it be better?
5. If we do the above, we need to project where that club is likely to finish in 2022 to determine if it was a better outcome.

And all this opposed to using it now to secure some points and a couple of kids we like and having them 2 yrs already developing in the system. All this while we have this chasm of young talent on the list.

So, again I don’t always agree with what the club does or has done and I don’t know whether they got this one right or wrong, but to sit there and keep going on that this was a high risk, low success bet is naive.

Will it be Streamed?

I don't view what we did as a risk. To me draft picks are recruiting opportunities.

I think you're over-complicating it. What we did was an opportunity that may work out well, but two middling picks in a draft that most other clubs were shying away from for a likely top 10 pick in a more highly rated draft is way below market value judging by other pick trades we see. I can't think of a situation where we could have gotten a lower trade price. Even if we just used it for points for Daicos, which it would likely cover with a simple trade down, that'd protect this year's 2nd and 3rd and probably the equivalent of another 2nd and 3rd - because that'll likely be the points differential if Daics rating remains so high.

The only scenario where it could be a good trade is that we got the rating of the draft right and the vast majority of other teams got it wrong. Considering our last decade of drafting has been pretty lacklustre, I'm not sure why we'd back ourselves in to be way above the curve in that regard - and even if we were, we should still have been able to get more back in return.

That’s not the only scenario at all. My guess is the club does know them all.

I can't think of another one.

TBH, I'm convinced that it was a hedged bet done before the draft in case Reef got a bid early. We started by trading out a future second for Reef points, so we obviously were going to trade 14 and 16 into the future draft, probably already agreed to, if a bid came. Then wanted to trade back in as Reef and then late picks would have been a horrible look after trading out 3 players.

Either pre-committed or were unable to adjust our planning when we got lucky and Reef slipped through.
