hows it going saints fans, firstly this isnt a troll, i just wanted to get your thoughts on Nick Dal Santo, i was having a debate with my cousin (who is a saints suporter) and we agree on wiether or not he is a damaging enough player i know he gets the ball and kicks it beutifully but i think that he just dosent hurt oppenets like he could. what do you think am i being to harsh, or have i hit the nail on the head

i think the only critism is that he may not be accountable for his opponent when he does not have the ball.

I actually think the club could do a lot more to get him the ball particularly in bringing the ball inside 50. Too many of his possessions are inside defensive 50. Very creative and brilliant user in traffic he needs more handball receives up the ground. He'd be so much more damaging if this was the case.

he's not the most penertrating kick but he very really misses the target. i think he needs to get a bit more of the ball start pushing the 30 possie mark instead of the 20 and yes he does need to get it closer to the sticks.

Dal is great player for us and there wouldn't be too many players I'd trade him for. Everytime he gets the ball, it doesn't matter how much pressure he is under, he always seems to find a team mate in space.

In other words, he is the opposite of Raphael Clarke.

Dal doesn't need 30 cheap touches and a huge dream team score to play a good game. Football is a team sport and I think a lot of people forget this. Nick plays a role for the team as an outside midfielder and he does it well. Anyways he'll still dominate super coach. :D

No he very really doesn't. Disposal is very good.

from what i have seen he is great with the ball, but needs an in and under player to feed him
otherwise could be the game plan does not suit the way he plays, but when he runs with it he is awesome

Front runner. Relies on Lenny and Bally feeding him the ball. All lightning no thunder.

every team needs one though.. if the in and unders can't get him the ball he cops all the criticism
I think Wallsy sums it up well in the paper:

In the midfield, two of St Kilda's young guns aren't firing. Nick Dal Santo put in a selfish, disturbing performance. Never mind that the papers put him in the best players, he wasn't. He is far too concerned with taking easy out-wide handball receives in the back half than he is winning contested ball through the midfield, where he can then help his forwards with precise foot passing.
His stats three rounds in show him to be high on receives and low on hard-ball gets. He might also think about being responsible for an opponent at the appropriate times, rather than freewheel 100% of the time.

Walls always has the man he hates. His critic on Ball was distrubing, although may have had some merit as a forward.

I do, however, think Dal needs to be more accountable, as do they all, when it is not going our way. A fair bit of truth about locking the ball in the forward line. I also agree, and had been preaching, that Frase needs the licence to be able to stay in the forward 50 exclusively. I think he got that off me :o

Hasn't he publicly stated on several occasions that Dal Santo is his favourite for the Brownlow this year ?

I think people are quick to jump the gun here. Dal Santo is a pretty good tackler from what I have seen from him over the years. Guys like Simon Black who had about 8 possies was let go over the weekend yet Dal has one poor game and gets attacked. He can improve alot on his game and I think he is one of the smoothest operaters in the game with skill to die for. Great in traffic and fantastic skills that need to be utilised. Lenny Hayes, Baker and Ball are our tackling midfielders while Dal Santo and Harvey are our in traffic clever players. What we lack is pace and Joey Montagna and Xavier clarke followed by Dal is not fast enough. The sooner Armitage (pick 9) comes along the better our midfield will be, he was the fastest player in the draft the other year and I think we should be playing him now. Rucks are stocked with McEvoy another top 10 pick from last year on the shelf.

Or should we ask the question about our midfield, are they fit?

They should be? We have David Mission who is a respected fitness conditioner. None of our midfield have had any major injuries during the off season. By all reports St.kilda's pre season went very well. They should be fit enough to run out four quarters.

His only prob is a lack of accountability.. otherwise, champ... skills much better than most players

end of thread

Have you seen him run in a game? He ain't quick ... he's about the same speed as Lenny, and is an inside midfielder as well. While he may or may not deserve a game on merit, adding him to the team won't increase our running capabilities.

He is Fast mate, thats why we picked him uo For god sake. We wouldn't have picked up a slow midfeilder. Fact is he was the quickest player that year. He would leave our current midfeilders for dead in pace.

He killed it in the agility test and was one of the quicker guys in every area tested. It's fair to say he hasn't use it when the ball is in his hands though when in the AFL. At the moment he puts it on his boot far too quickly but he certainly has the potential to be a ball carrier.

Have you ever seen him play? He's not quick; he's not slow either, but Andrew Lovett he ain't. He's an inside midfielder ala Ball and Hayes. He may or may not get a game this week, but if he does it's not because of his pace.

The other person to consider here is Jones. Two weeks ago shows incredible courage, that motivates the rest of the team and lifts them to a victory. Then he's dropped. What is that?!?!? I've tried to make sense of it in previous threads, but I just don't buy it any more.
