Re: Nicm Maxwell

I worry that your first instinct after a bad loss is to make a thread about a player who had very little to do with the loss. The merits/negatives of Maxwell have been debated ad nauseum. It smells of "we lost...I don't know why...time for a Maxwell sux thread".
mate its not just this week, when we played the eagles in the first quarter he tried to hack it off the ground, clean missed it and gave west coast the goal because he couldnt clear it, last week vs melbourne he did it a number of times...
he thinks he is tough and he walks around like he is the best footballer to ever walk on the park, FACT is he is not even close to the top 500 footballers ever.....he just needs to go back to the VFL to make him realise that he isnt the best player going around, look at the good it has done for Bear Bryan when he missed out for the first 8 weeks or so of the season, he is playing awesome because he knows he is playing for his career!!
And its payed dived ends for him(bear), i think dropping him(maxwell) for a couple of weeks would do him/club the world of good!

Re: Nicm Maxwell

You're missing the point. Also, you'll never hear me say "we won, stop complaining" or anything even close to that.

I'm all for you calling for his head if;

a) he's one of the main reasons we lost
b) his form has been consistently shit

Neither a) or b) is remotely true, so I don't see why the thread was started. He's been good 3 out of the last 4 weeks (esp. against Melbourne where he was in the best) and I could name at least 8 players who were more responsible for today's loss.
hate to say it buddy but he is consistently shit!

Re: Nicm Maxwell

Are you kidding me? Are you serious?

I don't know how people cannot see how poorly he plays at times.

He cut off some leads nicely at times, but that is IT.

Every time he has a direct opponent he gets torn a new hole by them. Add to that his fumbles and poor disposal.

How can you see him as one of our better performed defenders?

With my eyes.
Pretty bloody obvious.

I thought he did ok today.
Out of the whole side he would have been one of a few that broke even.

Like I've said before, Nick will never be one with flashy skills. He's always giving 100% which is 75% more than some in our side at times.

My reply from a thread last week: http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=453347&page=2

I'm so pleased that people here are supportive of Maxwell. I think he's an incredible clubman and is someone who gets the best out of himself.

However, he played on most likely the third or fourth best target for a rubbish Melbourne team who were missing Neitz and Robertson (and we had Marty Clarke on Wonaemirri) - and beat him. If people want to congratulate him for DOING A JOB ANY AFL PLAYER SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO IN HIS SLEEP then it's fine if they want to settle for mediocrity.

While he might be a good spoiler against the smaller players, his skills still let him down - his disposal by foot and hand are largely still to players under pressure or even worse, down the throat of our opposition. Watch what happens when he gets the ball. The first touch will most likely be to a player in entirely the wrong position, or under the pump, and you could almost count the seconds before the ball ends up with an opposition shot on goal.

He's never been any good in a key position. Recall the last time he played on a key position forward was in 2006 - he played on Mitch Clarke from Brisbane, who took him to the cleaners with four goals before Maxwell was moved off him. Before that, I remember MM tried Maxwell on Pavlich, i think early 2006. Within five minutes of the game starting, Pavlich had kicked two goals and the crowd was screaming "move Maxwell off Pavlich!".

He is of limited ability, the new generation's Jason Cloke if you like. I'd rather see him pushed out by Goldsack or another flexible tall with skills. While people can compare Maxwell with Cox or any VFL plodders, I'd rather compare him to the best in the competition - not just in effective spoils to a third rate Melbourne defender, but the best in the comp overall. We can only get better if we compare our players to the benchmark and then ask: how do we compare? How does Maxwell compare to the best? What would it take for him to get better?

Who kicks better? Who creates more off the halfback? Who is better body on body? Another question: if Clement were still in the team - would Maxwell be? I think not.

Again, don't get me wrong, I don't hate Maxwell, far from it. I just don't think he's that good - and not worthy of being our captain. I would love to see Maxwell improve his skills, improve his ability to deliver to our players up the field, to set up more. I think he lets us down in that respect. It's up to him to work harder and improve that side of his game, but at his age I can't see how it might happen.

In terms of keeping a man accountable in a one on one, he lost out today to SIMON F*CKING WIGGINS, who even Carlton supporters will tell you is the sh*ttest player on their list. Four Carlton goals to Maxwell in the final quarter through sheer ineptitude. Please save this man (and our club) from further turmoil by putting Goldsack or Anthony in the team MM!
