Nick Maxwell

I do understand that Big Footy is for opinions and each to there own but im so surprised that so many Collingwood supporters ask for Nick Maxwell to be dropped.

Anyone that has played or coached the game would realise how good of a player he is. He plays hard and tough, he is an outstanding leader on the field and goes about his job 100%. He is not the most skilled player but plays with in his own ability and handballs when he can as he knows there are better kicks in the team. He also has the ability to play on tall and small players and can even pinch hit up forward.

Its becoming embarrassing for the clowns on the folder calling for his head as the match committee and the Coach know he is one of the 1st picked each week.

People that know the game notice the bump he lays after a handball, the help he gives other defenders, the 3rd man up in the ruck when needed, the running back with the flight that lifts the team, the tackles he smashs blokes with (See PF 2007).

He is the heart of the Magpie team and will be for a while yet.

You can't question his attack on the football or the physical side to Maxwells game, he gives his all everytime, its just the other areas that are lacking. I think he is needed in the team for his hardness because other than him and Bryan there is noone that really tries to really hit packs and hurt the opposition (fairly).
Is it my imagination or do opposition teams go through his opponent alot? like we did with Lewis Roberts Thomsom against Sydney. Adelaide used Burton alot when Maxwell was on him and he kicked four goals in the first half.

I agree with you, however he isn't exactly a good one on one defender. He leaks more goals than any other defender in our side, that's without looking at stats though. He is very similar to Goldsack, but Goldy is a better rebounder and defender. Eventually, we will only have room for one, when JA finds his spot down back. That's my opinion, but for now, he should be in the side.

After this Maxy played about 5 mins up forward and then down back the rest of the game, moving between Bock, Douglas, Bassett and even Johncock, all of which had no impact while he himself set up many thrusts forward. I agree the decisions were poor but Burton had the better position to either take the mark or get the free kick. Burton is a very good player so there is no shame in that.
I think any defeciency in his game is made up for by his hardness. He wouldn't have laid the most tackles in the team, I wouldn't think, but he would lay the hardest. Though, in all honesty, if our onball line had the hardness of Hawthorns onball line I don't know if Maxwell would get a game each week, though I do agree with you in saying at the moment he is automatic selection.

i havent seen the game so i wont comment on this week, my brother did say he was an umpires bitch for a while but never mind.

For most of the season he has been a very solid player, and one of teh best only last week. The hatred directed at him does stagger me

Yes he does the hard stuff and puts his body on the line, but so do the other 21 blokes on the field (most of the time) - as they're expected to. he is not the only player we have who can tackle and bump etc

so the fact that he does the minimum should not be why he gets left in. he has average skills, and he often makes poor decisions.

i'm not a maxwell hater. i know he's played a couple of good games and was good against the swans, and in fact i rarely criticise heavily our own players, but its simply the fact that there are a few people i want to see in our side before maxwell.

I love the bloke, I think no one goes harder as often as he does in the Collingwood side.

I'm not putting him in the same boat as Archer, but Glen wasn't the most skillful, he wasn't the best in his side but what he was, was a player who goes hard, goes often and lead the team in thinking "if its good enough for him, its good enough for me".

Nick is a star, not in the same way as Didak & Thomas, but every team needs a player like him.

People like Big Bucks dn't have a understanding on the game. I bet ya he's never played a game of football in any comp outside of school footy and he thinks looking good & losing is better than looking poor & winning.

That ain't fair mate. While there may be some like Big Bucks who like to criticize endlessly and for no good outcome, most of us here are pretty fair with our opinions and it is perfectly reasonable to disagree on some players.

Sometimes you guys are just as annoying. I mean, there's the group who act like trolls and bag everyone and everything, and there's a group who blindly follow - which is not wrong, but whats annoying is that they raise their noses to anyone else who has a different opinion.

It's why this footy forum works mate...how boring would it be otherwise.
