The only bad thing you can say about him is he misses the easy shots now and then.

Most of the time he's just awesome. I really hope he goes into the finals at 100% this year and I don't care if that means resting him for 3 or even 4 games during the season.

If 19 games is good enough for Ablett to win a flag and brownlow why bother with 22?

I especially liked the first highlight :p
That's what we've been missing. Milney's been superb, and Stanley's been trying his guts out, but how much better are we going to be...

Done - they truly are bottom feeders. Never content to just enjoy victories, the obsess with rubbing their filth in the faces of others. I note that the "Saints List Dilemma" has quickly been replaced (upon being closed by a mod) with another boring pile of tripe from KissTroll, Tiny from Timmytown, and the Gnarley Itchy Eyeball.

Gnarly Itchy Eyeball? Oh you mean Foo the Man Muncher?

If you are feeling benevolent you might want to check out Joey's page as well, though at least he is mentioned in the 2010 summary.

It also claims he was investigated for rape, though the referenced newsclip only mentions him in that the incident took place at his house. Surprisingly Milne's page is clear of this sort of crap.

The one thing Nick Riewoldt can't do is consistently kick goals from within 25 metres out directly in front. One really disappointing aspect of saints fans is lauding their good players to be better than they really are - and seriously, over time, it goes to their heads

Everyone had a crack at Brett Peake for missing targets in both Grand finals that resulted in turnovers and collingwood goals, but we had Schneider and Gilbert miss targets (i.e the goals) for a combined total of 5 in one quarter of the replay.

And why does this happen ? Because the Captain sets the standard of mediocrity in shooting for goal. It was bad enough that he didn't steady when he took that mark in the goal square in the first quarter of the replay - only to have it smothered by that hack Heath Shaw - the moment that will be seen as 'when the saints lost the premiership' but in actual fact, more deplorable was his miss from 20m in the 3rd quarter of the first GF - despite taking a great mark to have the opportunity - immediately after the rightful captain, Hayes, got a magnificent clearance from the centre following a Goddard goal. It could have and should have been the time the saints stamped their authoriy over the game with 2 goals in 2 minutes against a wilting opponent.

Sometimes we get carried away with the 'Highlights package' that Riewoldt provides over the course of the season - plenty of hard running and courageous spectacular marks - but at the end of the day he doesn't perform his role. Despite missing manay games through injury last year, he still had 73 shots on goal - but only nailed 39 of them.

That's not acceptable from a captain, particularly when the same malaise filters thru to him teammates.

Compare this with the last 2 premierships captains - Tom Harley and Nick Maxwell - both against the saints. For the casual observer, these guys' career highlights reels would go for less than one minute but their blunders are non-existent and that's what makes them great captains - they give their best every week and they never let their team mates down.

One of the reasons, Jack Riewoldt wasn't drafted by the saints - even though he'd been training with them that pre-season - was there was doubt on his kicking ability. God knows we didn't need 2 riewoldts that couldn't kick straight! Yet, 3 years later Jack has improved so much that he won the Coleman medal, whilst after 10 years in the system, Nick still hasn't got a clue in that regard.

I'm sorry to say, with this is mind, the saints will never win a flag whilst Nick Riewoldt is captain.

I think you will find StKilda's more reputable backs have a similar record.
If you play in the back line and make lots of mistakes you don't play AFL.
If you miss a goal, it is possible to make a mistake ( ie GF2 Riewoldt) but inaccuracy is a different thing.

Riewoldt's tendancy to try and kick the ball too hard and low annoys the shit out of me, almost as much as the coaching staff that allow it to happen, but to say that we'll never win a flag with him as captain is strange (I had a few other words, but I'll go wth strange) when we've just played off in two close GFs.

Geezus - he bloke's won the B&F 5 times, kicked 6 goals in the QF & PF in 2010 and 9 in the same games in 2009 (5.1 and 4.1). Didn't help us get there just a little?

"One really disappointing aspect of saints fans is lauding their good players to be better than they really are"

How about not giving someone any credit for what they have done, and blaming the mistakes of others on him ("the Captain sets the standard of mediocrity in shooting for goal" and "not acceptable from a captain, particularly when the same malaise filters thru to him teammates").

Whilst most St Kilda supporters would be a huge fan of Hayes, I don't think they slag Riewoldt to make Lenny look better in comparison.

Nick Riewoldt

The skipper had a very disappointing 2011, failing to reach the high expectations of both fans and himself. Following a determined comeback from a torn hamstring, Riewoldt came into the season looking to once again assert himself as one of the elite Forwards in the AFL after a controversial off season where explicit images of him and team mates were released.

Riewoldt started off the season fairly slowly, scoring 1 goal in a low scoring loss to Geelong in Round 1. This seemed to change when picked up 6 goals in the following two rounds. He did though have his first lean patch in rounds 5-7, where he only managed 1 goals 6 behinds. Riewoldt looked to be the most frustrated player in the team at that point, he was not getting the service needed to have a huge influence on games and was suffering from the lack of contested possession being won. The pressure was slowly piling on when St kilda lost 3 consecutive matches for the first time since 2007.

Following the horrid start to the season, the skipper along with the St kilda team tried to find there way back into finals contention and did so by convincingly beating Melbourne in Rd 9. A match in which Rooey collected a career best 31 disposals, while this seemed like an amazing feat for a CHF, Riewoldt was actually pushed into the mid-field due to his inability to consistently put on scoreboard pressure. In saying this Riewoldt did kick 3 goals.

Sadly for Riewoldt this form did not last, and a few weeks later he had his worst game for the season against eventual premiers Geelong, where he had no goals and only 7 disposals. It was at this point that it became clear to all that in the absence of Justin Koschitzke, Riewoldt had little chance of having an impact, because he would often be double and triple teamed by opposition defenders. This did not sway Ross Lyon into bringing in another tall forward into the lineup, preferring his ideal setup of Riewoldt, 2 smalls and a medium forward. Saints fans urged Lyon to at least give the captain a chance to have a 1 on 1, but this never eventuated, partly due to Koschitzke's less than stunning form and suspension and the coaches lack of trust in younger players.

For the second time in the season, Roo was able to kick goals goals in 3 consecutive matches. This included a 5 goal haul against North Melbourne in a pivotal game, in which the loser would probably miss out on being in the top 8. As was the story of his season, Riewoldt was held goal less for 8th ! time in the season, in an important win over fellow finalist Carlton in Rd 24. In the elimination final Nick had one of his most disappointing games registering an inaccurate 1 goals 3, a surprising performance from the skipper who was known for his leading performances in Finals.

Overall, Riewoldt had his worst season as a senior player. But will look forward to having a fresh start with a new coach, game-plan and possible Forward set up. Many thing s contributed to Riewoldts poor season including, the teams poor form, the lack of help up forward, a persisting Knee injury and the personal and family issues he had to deal with.

Anyone who knows Riewoldt will know that he will do anything over the preseason to make sure he is able to reach his lofty heights. This may include changing his playing style to suit ever changing AFL tactics, that don't really suit his never ending leading patterns and hopefully improving his set shot kicking. Saint fans and general lovers of the sport will be hoping Riewoldt gets back into the form that made him All Australian captain and a current day Champion.

2012 Player Review

NICK Riewoldt
Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt has had an outstanding 2012 season, having played 19 games in a much more injury-free year. In many ways, Roo had his best statistical season since 2009. St Kilda coach Scott Watters suggested that Riewoldt was on track for All-Australian before injuring his knee. Nick Riewoldt was selected in the 40-man squad for All-Australian selection.
Nick Riewoldt ranked in the top 20 for marks in the AFL, with 125 marks at an average of 6.6 marks per game. Showcasing his marking capability, Riewoldt also ranked in the top 20 for contested marks and an amazing 6th in Marks Inside 50. This goes to show the champion is still capable of playing excellent football. Riewoldt placed 10th in goals per game (2.5) and 10th in the Coleman Medal leader-board on 47 goals. Roo has only been held goalless once this year, in Round 17 against Sydney when he scored 0 goals and 3 behinds.
All in all, Nick Riewoldt has had another great year for the mighty Saints. The superstar has been a consistent achiever and has proved you should never write off a champion. Nick has exhibited his goal-kicking prowess and trademark marking with style. Another brilliant season for St Nick.

Roo hopping into new season

"ST KILDA captain Nick Riewoldt's strong pre-season has left him in as good shape as he was last year when he was able to successfully manage his troublesome knee.

The 30-year-old had a consistent 2012 and benefitted from orthokine therapy on his left knee, before an injury to the tendon behind his right knee in round 20 kept him from playing the final three rounds.

"He's flying. He's going very well, keeps knocking on the door every morning asking to play, and I just have to say no at the moment," Watters said on Saturday, as the club prepared to fly to Adelaide.

"[The knee] is something he's had to manage for three or four years now and medically, we were able to really get on top of it last year."

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-02-16/roo-hopping-into-2013

Riewoldt will rely on a German medical technique to nurse a degenerative left knee injury through the AFL season.

"Yeah, it's something I've got to manage and I think ultimately it will be the thing that probably forces me to retire. But certainly I've got a few years left yet,'' he said today.

"It has been ongoing for a while now. I managed it pretty well last year. I was able to put in a pretty solid year until I got injured (missed the last three rounds) with a totally unrelated injury.''

Riewoldt has the Orthokine therapy at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre. The treatment remove proteins from the blood that inhibit inflammation and are injected to the affected joint.

"They take your blood and - am I allowed to say inject? - and I've had some pretty good success from that,'' Riewoldt said.

"If I start to get sore and swollen, it's something I can go to. So, we have that up our sleeve.

"It's a concentrated burst. You have six weeks go of it and that lasts for six months.

"They spin the blood and take out the concentrated anti-inflammatory part of your blood and then inject it back.''
