I must admit, Vlastuin hasn't lived up to my expectations at all. Before all of you go crazy, I was expecting Nick to bring his inside, contested game which he mastered in the under 18s straight into the AFL. Instead, he has shown an outside game that no seven-gamer should even come close to possessing. I had some genuine concerns that he did not have an outside game to complement his style and that all he had to offer was grunt, clearances and tackles.

Vlastuin is going to be a really scary player. He is nowhere near his ceiling. At the moment we have a fearless midfielder who can not only read the play extremely well, but has elite skills and goal kicking ability. Imagine when he starts bringing more tackling, clearances and contested possession into his game. Imagine when he starts using his incredible lateral movement which we saw in the NAB cup. We all saw the sidestep and spin-around in the NAB games, he's yet to do it in AFL yet, but when he gets confidence, he can be anything.

Tigga is really full of surprises. He has shown unexpected pace and unexpected ball winning ability which proves that when he starts winning more contested ball, he'll have no issues in racking up 30 possessions a game. On top of that he's got excellent kicking skills to complement this disposal gathering ability.

I honestly believe that Tigga has been the third best first year player in the past 5 years only behind Martin and O'Meara. The best of the best things is that we still have Cotchin, Martin, Deledio and Conca still ahead of him. His game will be unimpeded for basically the first three years of his career. He will be able to learn the game without copping a tag every week.

Imagine if like Brendon he doesn"t have second year plateau and just continues to improve. I'm thinking these are very strong signs that the Tiger culture is changing :thumbsu:

ps I've been thinking this for a little while now.

He was never going to bring an inside game straight away like Wines would at Port since he's not as well built, anyone who watched him before being drafted would know his outside game was all class; there's a reason he was touted to be another Luke Hodge.

I'm absolutely loving the fact that just about every year we're draftin one or two players who are leaders, even if they only do it through actions like Morris.

It's easy if you try:p

Yeah i remember the queries on his pace but it looks excellent. I wonder how much his ankle was troubling him last year?

From memory he was touted as the no.2 pick behind Whitfield at the start of the year, i just wonder if he had a similar problem to Darling in that he had finished school already and had 12 months of waiting for his AFL dream to arrive. Not to mention being a little bit over exposed.

It is so refreshing to see us use our first round draft picks to select bigger bodied players who are ready to play straight away. Martin, Conca, Ellis and now Vlastuin. All were ready to play from day dot.

Compare this to our list of other first round picks.

Tambling, JON, Meyer, Pattison, Polo (1 pick outside the first round)etc

All were skinny kids who needed time, and ultimately, were found wanting.

This recruiting department are now starting to draft kids who can play straight away, and have the skills to mix it at AFL level.

Did my eyes deceive me or did he pull off another blind turn the other night like the he did in the NAB Cup? Ch.7 didn't replay it at the time.

Pretty sure he did. I think Ellis is getting close to A-grade and this kid is so far ahead of him at the same stage of their careers that it's ridiculous how good he could be.

And what about the courage he shows? Seen him on a few occasions marking with the flight of the ball. Ellis does this too. Having first and second year players doing this can only raise the bar for others.

All I want is for him to be a good ordinary player...in a premiership side.

That's not much to ask of the young lad is it? :)

Not much too ask at all TmM2. But if he's a good ordinary player can you imagine how the rest of the squad looks ? Dare to dream hey ? :thumbsu:
