Nicolas Winmar has officially been delisted by St Kilda.

http://www.saints.com.au/news/newsarticle/tabid/5315/newsid/151774/default.aspx

“Late last week we advised Nick and his manager that we would be releasing him from the final year of his contract with the St Kilda Football Club,” Head of Football Chris Pelchen said.

“This was a difficult decision, however we feel it is the right one for both Nick and the Club. Nick has been a respected member of the Saints over the past three years and we wish him every success for the future."

Nick looks really heartbroken about it.

Handed a contract extension on a silver platter and now is getting paid to do nothing. I would be too.

Seems that aspect of the story has since been deleted.

But if you look at the links to other stories (on the right) it's still there!

Maybe they can also revisit the "prized pick" (#48) we gave up for Brett Peake!

LOL I just went to Saints site and guess who the "player profile" was on... yep Nicolas Winmar

Is this kid any good, how has he performed in the 2s?

My review on his 2012 season..

NICOLAS WINMAR

VFL Senior Games: 14
VFL Senior Goals: 3
VFL Senior Averages: 11.5 disposals, 2.86 marks and 1.71 tackles
VFL Dev Squad Games: 2
VFL Dev Squad Goals: 1

2012 Player Rating: 3/10

Nicolas Winmar is one of the most interesting young players on the Saints list. There is no doubt he is loaded with talent and the club has enormous faith in him, evident by giving him long term contract couple years ago. The biggest issue with Winmar is has really struggled to perform on a consistent manner and has now found himself behind a lot of first year players in the pecking order.

Winmar’s season is tale of two halves, before being dropped to Development Squad and after regaining promotion to seniors.

Before being dropped
Disposals: 9.4
Marks: 2
Tackles: 1.4

In first half of year it appeared he was just cruising around and not really showing any real intensity or care in world. He had 4 games where he recorded fewer than 10 possessions and in all honesty it probably took too long to drop him to Development Squad.

After being back in seniors
Disposals: 15.2
Marks: 4.5
Tackles: 1.5

It’s fair to say that something clicked when he was dropped and this is one of the positives with being aligned with VFL side. If we were standalone he would have just been playing in seniors all year as there is no development squad. The pressure from beneath is positive as it keeps the Saints guys on their toes.

In last 5 games he really showed signs that he might actually make it, which is positive for Saints as he gives us some pace & hardness out of defence or on the wing. He has great ability to break the lines and can hit target by foot, although overall his disposal was below par, which I think came with lack of confidence.

Overall in 2012 Winmar collected 15 or more disposals on only 2 occasions and both those games he had it over 20 times. In 6 games he had less than 10 disposals.

There is no doubting that 2013 is a massive year for Winmar, he will need to be performing consistently from the start of year as likes of Newnes, Cripps, Dunell, Siposs, Saad, Milera have all gone passed him and can play the same role as Winmar.

If he can have a big preseason and performs next year it will be massive bonus for club as he does bring bit of x-factor and pace that is needed. Hopefully he takes a lot of confidence from way he ended the season and carries that into 2013.

No worries, bit further on that. He really didnt look interested at all and appeared to be just going through motions. He didnt seem to have the desire to want to make it at AFL level. Most will agree in saying that he was probably gifted an AFL career and really didnt earn his contract extension when he got it.

This is response by a fan on the TrueSainters facebook page to when we posted about Winmar's delisting today. Im still scratching my head.:confused: To think they think we delisted him cos of some deep hatred to the Winmar family is just staggering!

bastards.... our shame is the way our team has treated the Winmar family... horrid... absolutely horrid... lacking in integrity

Yeah, I saw that and thought, "Seriously... so you're advocating nepotism now...?"

No...

Though to be honest, I think the thought process of walking away from the game was probably in his mind before the cutting?

He didn't play or train like his heart was in it...

His manager Paul Connors slammed the Saints treatment of his client.
Connors revealed that the young utility player is disillusioned and could walk away from the AFL all together.
The high profile agent who also handles Carlton and league superstar Chris Judd, as well as Hawthorn gun Luke Hodge and Collingwood ace Dale Thomas, was not informed of St Kilda management’s intention to dismiss Winmar late last Friday after the meeting.
Connors declared that no player should be cut and deprived a due process to attempt to retain his career through the draft.
St Kilda’s decision to sack Winmar after the national draft means his contract payment is included in 2012 salary cap and not next year.
“It’s a poor reflection on the St Kilda football club and the system,” Connors said.
“It’s concerning that we treat our players like this, so soon after a draft.
“Nick is a contracted player and I think the club is duty bound to put their arms around him and work him through any concerns.
“Not to just drop him.”
Connors said no player should be treated like Winmar, regardless of whether it is a senior player or a younger list member with limited time at a club.
“There’s no way this sort of thing should happen,” Connors said.
“It makes it extremely difficult for any player who is de-listed after the natioinal draft to be picked up by another club.
"It's even more difficult this year given there will be only about 15 lives picks in the national rookie draft."
Connors confessed there is little option for complaint through the AFL player’s Association or the league, other than to scour the competition for interest in Winmar.
He can nominate for next month’s final selection for all AFL clubs at the pre-season and rookie drafts.
Connors fears that next month’s pre-season draft could be slim pickings with a host of clubs expected to ignore the process and limit hopes of Winmar continuing his stalled career.
Winmar returned to the Saints a fortnight ahead of compulsory training starting last week after their annual six-week leave, but is believed to have a less than favourable time trial.

That would be a pissweak effort (to walk away).

Why not tear it up in a state league (whilst banking your termination payment plus your new contract) and do a Mark Hutchings (or Lee or Wilkes etc etc)?

Paul Connors is such a tool. Probably didn't even watch any of Winmar's VFL games.

He makes extremely valid points, as much as Winmar didnt deserve to stay on list its pretty bad it wasnt done before national draft.

When was the time trial?

I think the valid point is the kid has been given chances, and abundance of them, and he appears to have blown it.

If he is considering walking away from the game at the first sign of things getting a little hard, that probably says quite a bit about the situation.

Can't keep protecting these guys from being dealt what they deserve.

Few weeks ago, he came last.

Im more talking about in general that its pretty bad that players can be cut after national draft when they are contracted. I think Winmar got what he deserved personally

You can be sure our club will be made an example of and the rules will be changed.

I don't care this time.

I'm kind of over being a club that settles for mediocre effort and behaviour, they probably had every intention of keeping him and he blew it, at least let's be real about where the fault lies.

Life is what you make of it.

Agree in a general sense, but if a player (who had a poor season) comes back out of condition there needs to be some mechanism to address it. Really isn't excusable when people like Curren are busting their balls to get on the list.

This is fairly extreme (versus putting him on the rookie list), but if he was good enough he could train with another club for over 2 weeks and show them he was worth being on a list.

Unless the other clubs have also watched his VFL performances of course!
