Night session needs to start earlier

i am sick of watching boring womens tennis until after 10pm to see the main match of the night

I mean, women DEMAND equal pay but it's always the men playing past midnight.

I've always thought that if the Women wanted the same money as men they should play 5 sets, if it's completly irrelevant Mac, then shouldn't the women be playing 5 sets? or is it because Women are physically weaker, that 3 sets to them is what 5 sets is to males?

To answer the actual question, should be moved back an hour or so.

Wouldn't that be a sign of equality? Wouldn't that be a start to justifying equal pay? Or do women turn into pumpkins at midnight?

Anyway, the day session should start at 10am, and there should be a 30-45 minute break for lunch rather than having to miss a set of tennis (ie. when you're there, and when I'm there, I'm off to the corporate lunch).

Night session should definitely start at 7pm.

If there was a mens match going on at 2am in the morning, no doubt that it would outrate, outspectate a womens match at the same time. Mens matches are the preferred choice, playing the womens before hand is more likely to have attract more ratings than playing it after. All about ratings unfortunatley.

Night session should definitely start at 7pm.

Up till last year (or the year before?) it actually used to start at 7 - 7:10pm but 7's coverage used to start at 7:30 - 8pm.... we'd get the coverage from the start of the match. Occasionally if the match was of importance or they wanted to skip to the men's match asap... they'd cut into the live action and progress from there.

That's why over the last 2 years they've began it at 7:30 and it's live. I'd love it to return to a 7pm start time, but they have to show H&A

Which is why I want all sport off FTA and on cable tv, such that showing something like Home & Away doesn't take preference over starting tennis at 7pm.

i think this complaint comes from the fact that the tennis has been a lot more arduous in this tournament. it just seems the speed of the courts have contributed to longer matches in general.

that stosur/zakapalova match was a painful affair to watch, it was a straight sets victory but it went nearly 2 and a half hours because of long meaningless rallies, and the rallies were finished with one player hitting it into the net or hitting it long, so it wasnt like it was a good clean fun match for those watching and those concerned

While I agree the first game should be rotated one argument could be that during the second week on a numbe rof nights the mens match is first followed by a doubles so perhaps over the fortnight it may get close to evening out.

Is this the first year they have had night vodafone (can't think of the new sponsor) sessions on the Friday and Saturday night? They have had games go late but never a official night session.

I can remember a couple of years ago when it was a really hot day and play on the outside courts did not start until around 8:30pm I arrived about 8pm and stayed until the final point was played at Vodafone(now Hisense arena) around 3:30am. I got home about 5pm. I saw 3 matches in that time.

If I was a pro tennis player I would complain to umpires and match referees about ridiculous grunting (Seles, Sharapova) and I would demand that women play some late matches. Even if women did play late, they are only playing best of 3 sets rather than best of 5 sets, so the women get it easy no matter which way you look at it.

Melbourne Park favourite Marcos Baghdatis says it's a "pain in the arse" Australian Open organisers keep making him play midnight matches.

Incredibly, a year after featuring in the infamous dawn showdown with Lleyton Hewitt, Baghdatis was again ordered onto court after 11.30pm for another third-round encounter last night.

Baghdatis, the 2006 Open runner-up, lost to Hewitt in last year's epic five-setter that finished at 4.34am.

This time, the Cypriot with Australian connections beat American Mardy Fish 6-2 6-4 6-4, but again he was the last player to leave the locker rooms after their match ended at 1.14am.

And, ironically, the result for Baghdatis was the same as for Hewitt 12 months ago - a daunting fourth-round meeting with Novak Djokovic.

"I cannot say it's not a problem," Baghdatis said.

"It's a bit of a pain in the arse for me because the last two years I'm here I'm finishing matches after midnight and after one o'clock, we can say.

"So it's a bit of the pain in the arse, but I have nothing to do about it. It's just the way it is. I've got to accept it and find a way to get through it and that's where the challenge starts."

Baghdatis did not want to make a big deal out of his misfortune, accepting the scheduling is also difficult for Open director Craig Tiley, but said it would be impossible to catch up on sleep before taking on reigning champion Djokovic tomorrow.

"I will wake up normal because my eyes will be open at seven or eight o'clock like always with all the adrenaline and all the pressure," he said. "So I don't think I'll get a lot of sleep.

"I'm not complaining or stuff. I'm just saying it's tough for the players. It happens that it's me second time in a row.

"But it doesn't matter, that's the way it is. You have to accept things and find a way to make everything good."

What a coincidence. Last year Djokovic played Hewitt who played in that match that went to 4:34am. And this year he plays Baghdatis who is unhappy at constantly playing late matches.

It's a ridiculous advantage to have played an afternoon match and be finished by 4pm or 5pm when your opponent in the next round is still on court at 1am or even 4am the following morning.

The men need to stand up and demand a better draw. Or for the inconvenience, more money than the women.

By evening out I meant who plays first so gets the prime time coverage. I think the answer might be to just play a doubles game as the second game.

Marcos does have a point, all of Jelena's matches so far have gone three sets...don't get me wrong I hope she wins tonight but Baghdatis and Djokovic probably won't get on court before 10pm again today! It's not just for the players, if a men's match this late went for five sets half the crowd won't even see it! Hewitt/Baghdatis last year deserved a better timeslot...

Starting the night session at 6:30pm or even 7pm on weekends would make a lot of sense as there's no Today Tonight or Home & Away.
