Adelaide will not ban its players from drinking alcohol this season.

Coach Neil Craig has dismissed an article in The Advertiser today which suggests he has asked the leadership group to “adopt” an alcohol ban.

“That is not correct,” Craig said. “I have not asked for any such ban and I was not asked if this was true.

“The use of alcohol and its impact on player behaviour and performance has been and will be discussed at this football club, as are many issues. Our players already have rules in place about alcohol use during the week, after games and when injured.

“Some players may make their own decision not to drink during the season but I’m not convinced a long-term ban is the answer.”

ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig wants the Crows to ban alcohol this season.

Craig has thrust the notion of a booze ban on his leadership group.

It is up to captain Simon Goodwin, Brett Burton, Tyson Edwards, Ben Rutten, Kris Massie and Nathan van Berlo to adopt the idea as their own, as they did Craig's suggestion of a curfew late last season.

Adelaide football operations manager John Reid yesterday confirmed the alcohol ban was on the club's agenda.

"We've had some discussions, but at this stage it (a booze ban) is not club policy," Reid said.

"I think there will be further discussion on it."

Reid expressed doubt on the players being asked to go without alcohol for the complete season.

"But something might evolve from our discussions on the topic," Reid said.

He said it might mean no alcohol on match days, during recovery periods or while training, but players would be able to drink responsibly on days off.

"John Reid, in his own thoughts, questions if there is any advantage on a ban," Reid said.

"Everything in life requires a balance.

"If we put a full ban on these footballers, what happens to them when they leave the club?

"It might be more relevant to teach players to deal with alcohol than cover it up with a ban.

"That is part of the philosophical argument we're having and will continue to have at the club."

The Crows sampled a week-long booze ban, forced upon them by law in Dubai when they played the NAB Cup opener against Collingwood at the weekend.

Rookie David Mackay yesterday declared the Crows coped being dry.

"It was part of many eye-opening experiences over there with a completely different culture," Mackay said.

Asked how the players would cope with the ban if the leadership group endorsed Craig's thinking, Mackay said: "That's fine. But it's hard to tell."

I just dont understand why the Advertiser expect people to buy their paper while such shit is written in it. Its not like they are unable to find someone better cos anyone would be better. Wheres their logic?

It is very interesting the role that alcohol plays in a sporting team environment.

I heard Damien Fleming speak recently about the Aussies 1999 World Cup campaign that almost fell off the rails. Raging favourites before the tournament, we were within a game of being bundled out before the Super Sixes. The team got their act together about halfway through and ended up winning it after two back-to-back classics versus the South Efricans.

Fleming said that the stifling, high-pressure environment at the beginning of the tour with curfews, alcohol bans etc got lifted and the team decided to "get on the gas" after their wins. Things snow balled from there.

And I remember hearing Malcolm Blight speak about one of our premiership years. We won a game at Subiaco against Fremantle and weren't flying home until the next day. The team had a night off in Perth and had plenty of beers, relaxed, had a laugh, had a good time etc. Blight said it was a wonderful team-bonding weekend.

On the flipside, Graham Cornes believes that a Monday (or Sunday?) night piss up cost us some precious recovery time in 1993 and was a key factor in us being bundled out of the finals. That and Mark Bickley's fart during his all important 3/4 time address.

It's all in the timing.

I don't get it, everybody was going on at fiveaa that it would be major if the crows did ban alcohol for a season.
But didn't Geelong ban it last season? Haven't others banned it before?

You mean there are other teams besides the crows and port in the AFL? Seriously Ben, 5aa and the majority of their callers aren't aware of them ;) :p

Alcohol policy left to chill

MICHELANGELO RUCCI

ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig concedes an alcohol ban on his AFL players is not practical.

While confirming the Crows have - and will continue - to review its policies on alcohol, Craig has declared: "I'm not convinced a long-term ban is the answer."

Craig adds: "The use of alcohol and its impact on player behaviour and performance has been and will be discussed at this football club.

"Our players already have rules in place about alcohol use during the week, after games and when injured.

"Some players may make their own decision not to drink during the season."

The Advertiser reported on Wednesday - with confirmation from Crows football operations manager John Reid - that Adelaide had on its agenda a booze ban for the full AFL season.

"We've had some discussions," said Reid, "but at this stage it (a booze ban) is not club policy.

"I think there will be further discussion on it."

At issue is who put discussing an alcohol ban on the Crows' agenda.

Craig is understood to have taken exception to the notion he has thrust this proposal on the leadership group to adopt as its own - as he did last year with the ill-fated curfew imposed late in the season.

This is seen to portray the leadership system being constructed at West Lakes as a puppet regime to Craig's rules.

Adelaide chief executive Steven Trigg yesterday did not answer the question of how the booze ban was placed on the Crows' discussion papers.

"But Neil Craig certainly has not done that," Trigg said.

Well I think we know who's making an issue of it, despite the fact JR confirmed its not club policy.

Big deal if its listed on an agenda. Then there is this from Mr Rutten:

Ben Rutten puts cork in drink debate

ANDREW CAPEL | February 15, 2008

NEW vice-captain Ben Rutten says alcohol is not an issue - and not on the leadership group's agenda - at the Adelaide Football Club.

While several players, most notably the now-departed Ben Hudson, felt the wrath of the club for off-field indiscretions last season, Rutten said the new leadership group did not feel the need to adopt a new alcohol policy.

And he said coach Neil Craig was not pushing one down the players' throats either.

"He hasn't spoken to us about anything like that," Rutten said.

"And it (a new alcohol policy) is not something that we're concerned about.

It's the same rubbish year in year out, there was the article trying to claim that Port are catching up to Adelaide supporter wise (based on some supposed report) yet Port are now out of the NAB cup and only a few weeks to go until the season and they havent even sold 30k memberships yet, so they will not reach their membership target and will most probably have about the same number as last year.

Also some article about Rucci raving on about Port getting some sponsorship deal and making it out as though Port are the hottest commodity in football :D No business in their right mind would sponsor Port Adelaide over the larger clubs, so it was obviously just the bullies and North Melbourne most probably that were also in the running for that deal.

That's an interesting point. Given how UNpopular and unappealing Port are (generally speaking), it suprises me that any organisation or company would want to 'tar' their name by being associated with the Power (through sponsorships or otherwise).

And just when we thought he'd finished:

  • ADELAIDE's booze ban on its players is still brewing.
But club chief executive Steven Trigg doubts - but has not ruled out - the Crows will be put under a total ban throughout an AFL season.
Trigg yesterday revealed Adelaide's review of its alcohol policy was before a special committee at West Lakes.
It is the "behaviour advisory committee", which is reviewing all issues of player behaviour. It was formed late last season from "a broad cross section" of Adelaide staff and officials. "It is true to say we are often reassessing what we are doing in that area (of player behaviour)," Trigg said.
"And the curfew late last year was part of that.
"No-one has said we want a (season) ban - we don't actually believe that will work.
"And I doubt they (the behaviour advisory committee) will come back with a recommendation to senior management for a drinking ban (to be imposed throughout the AFL season). But they may recommend it for certain periods of time. We'll see."

Seriously, how does this man keep his job? How about he do some real journalist work rather than make up some bull s*** story and then twist the Crows officials words to make about 10 articles out of it. I think its about time this bloke found a life, discovered women, or something:confused:.

Yep he writes rubbish like this yet when Port had their Tredders 1 vote for captain in 2005 senario there was nothing published in the papers in Adelaide. He is just a Port Adelaide spin doctor, pretty sad when Rucci feels compelled to risk his job to help Port, I guess it shows how rosey things actually are down there if at least half of the rubbish rucci tries to claim about Port were true he wouldnt have any need to try and spread his bullshit Port propaganda through the powertiser.

I actually hate reading his articles now, before it wasn't so bad. But I pretty much just skip an article with his name on it.

I wanna start a petition to get Fairfax to open a new paper in South Australia.

Cool new paper...

I always fancied having a new paper called 'The Centralian'...Until I heard there already was a paper called that.

Haha, what was dubious about the Jarman trade? We gave up a fair bit and it was widely considered to be the fairest three way deal ever.

There can't be any more of an asterisk than telling eventual premiership players not to nominate for the 1995 draft so they can be picked up as a zone selection in 1996.
