Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

I have been thinking about this for a while and there are a few posts on the main board so now might be a good time.

To upgrade or not to upgrade, that is the question.

A situation like this will come up most weeks so don't take the players literally but I'll use names to make it easier.

There are quite a few people stuck with mid range players they thought were going to do more and hence have become trade bait. Ed Barlow, Mark Nicoski etc. The values and scores are almost stagnant so there is not much upside to keeping them.

We are a few rounds in and plenty of people have a stockpile of cash (100ish) they are itching to spend.

The question is, downgrade to Wonnaemirri or upgrade to Gilbee (for example). The upgrade provides an immediate improvement and saves a trade. The downgrade provides a bigger bucket of cash, access to more cash but costs 1 more trade - remembering there is cash available and no further cash cows are required - on the way to a premium, be it in the backs or elsewhere.

There are good arguments for both and I ask you to give me yours. Ultimately it is always the objective to upgrade and obviously Wonaemirri would be upgraded eventually but you would have to wait a few weeks.

Upgrade now or upgrade later... forum do your stuff.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Yup, I was just considering that question. Nicoski is the one bloke on my team I am keen to get rid of.

There are basically four options in this situation - do nothing, downgrade, sideways, or upgrade.

Doing nothing saves you one trade, but basically you have the same situation the next week (assuming your mid-range player pulls out another 55 or 60, as you'd expect.) So it'll cost you, say, the 30 points you'd lose from an upgrade, plus it will just impinge on your trading in the coming weeks--we all know a lot of forwards and mids are going to be prime.

Downgrading to Wona would get you similar score, and you'd have plenty of cash available for all your upgrades in the next 2-3 weeks. But you're giving away the extra trade (later on in the season). For me, because I have only 100K in the piggy, giving away that trade is more than worth it. I get lots of room for upgrading plus I get at least 100K profit from Wona. It's the only way I can bring in midfield guns in round 7-8, and they will boost my team score by at least 50 points a week.

The other option is a sideways trade to a Bradshaw type. Helps your score, you get a profit, but restricts your money in bank for next few rounds' trades. Yo might end up having to trade down a cash cow to upgrade to Kornes/Mitchell-and that defeats all your good intentions. I don't want to have to do anything to my cash cows except straight upgrades at this point.

Finally, the situation with a straight upgrade from Hurn/Nicoski (whichever) to a backman. This takes about $140,000. At this point, I would be seeking to use my money on other areas because that $140,000 can go into peak/bottom trades which will ultimately advantage you more than a trade from a non-peaking player (nicoski) to a gun.

So for me the downgrade looks best. I've only used one trade, so I'm willing to trade aggressively and try and bring in four guns (Riewoldt, Brown, Mitchell, Kornes) in the next 2-3 weeks. If you have a larger piggy or you have less need for trades/fewer trades in hand that would change considerations.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Extremely relevant question Stig and fantastic summary Kid A.

I am in your situation except with Hurn.

IMO the downgrade is the solution at the moment but only because of the circumstances. There is only 1 reason for this and his name is Wonamerri. If he did not exist as a week 2 rookie with 2 solid scores I would not be downgrading given issues with job security for other low end backs. I feel that his prospects of holding his position for the next 4-6 weeks are extremely solid because Bailey would want to look at him for as long as possible before he goes back to the rookie list. This should be long enough to make 100-120K. The other advantage is his price (73K) which frees up even more cash.

Given the number of premium forwards / mids representing excellent value over the coming 3 weeks it is imperative to have cash available to take advantage of this. Had the situation in the backs not been available it would potentially mean a downgrade in the Mids to a Masten / Wona type to free up some cash.

The idea of doing nothing is probably option 2 but is a long way behind option 1. This would mean wait until you have cash free from other positions to upgrade or wait for another good rookie back to come along.

As far as upgrading, the price fluctuations in the premium backs are not as high as the mids / forwards ATM so this option can wait until later.

Sideways trade. I once owned a horse which ran 5 lasts in a row and backing it would be a better option than a sideways trade in the mid-range backs.

Re: Week 5 Teams - Discussion

ST KILDA v ESSENDON
IN: C.Gardiner, Armitage
OUT: Gehrig, Fiora
Armitage is the key inclusion here. I was very suprised when Geary made his debut in Round 1 in place of Armitage. I heard alot of great things about him, but I'm yet to really see him in action except for the couple of games last season. I think he will be one to watch closely. Especially for those whose rookie mids will be maxxing out in the next few weeks, and also coaches with Trav Tuck.
IN: Lloyd, Monfries, Welsh
OUT: McVeigh (hamstring), Lonergan (hamstring), Peverill
Nothing much here. You shouldn't have Lloyd, Monfries, Welsh, McVeigh or Peverill. Although the injury to McVeigh will catch out all the newbie bandwagoners who jumped on after his brilliant start to the season.
Does anyone know the extent of Lonergan's injury? He may be worth a look if he returns.

Geelong v Sydney
In: Mackie, Prismall
Out: Gamble (suspended), Taylor (omitted)
Harry Taylor has to be the omission of the round - after impressing so many fantasy coaches he has been dropped to make way for Andrew Mackie. Some would say it was inevitable, and I'm glad I took the advice of some of you guys on here - because I too was contemplating trading in Taylor. As if we don't have a big enough problem with the backs as it is!
The other one is Prismall. I'm thrilled to see him included, because he had a great NAB cup and made the short-list for my team. If he plays 2 good games then I will consider trading him in.
The one that may be overlooked is mackie. With a distinct lack of premium backs this season, high scoring defenders are worth their weight in gold. If he regains his 07 form then he will be up there with the best.
In: Nick Smith, Nick Davis
Out: Barry Hall (susp), Luke Brennan
Meh. Next. (although Hall's absence will cost many coaches at least one trade - so its a bonus for those who don't have him)

Adelaide v Fremantle
In: Jacky
Out: Bryce Campbell (ankle)
It'll be good to see how young Jacky goes.
IN: Michael Johnson, M.Carr, McManus, Drum, Hinkley
OUT: Headland (knee), Tarrant, Warnock, Duffield, Peake
The dockers really pulled the changes, although (hopefully) this shouldn't affect too many dt coaches. Headland would be the main one - although he is a DT hack and shouldn't be in anyone's team (although a mate of mine picked him and was patting himself on the back after his first 2 games)
Marcus Drum has been impressive in the few games he's played in his career. If he gets a regular spot then he would be worth a look. (I'm assuming he's still a back? Correct me if this is not the case)
Clayton Hinkley will make his AFL debut.

Collingwood v North Melbourne
In: Holland, Goldsack, Reid
Out: Nick Maxwell (suspended), Toovey, Stanley (omitted)
Hmm, not much to see here either. Except for Ben Reid. Many were expecting him to come in to replace Sean Rusling in Round 2, so it will be good to see how he goes. Collingwood's second/third year fringe players are risky, as it seems Malthouse is giving them all a chance. (e.g. toovey, Stanley, goldsack etc)
In: Hale, Harding
Out: Josh Gibson (knee), Ben Ross
I'm deliberately boycotting Kangaroos rookies after seeing how Laidley has treated Hansen and Thompson.

Brisbane Lions v Hawthorn
In: Charman, McGrath
Out: Wayde Mills, Lachlan Henderson (omitted)
Jamie "free kick against" charman is included - but he shouldn't even be considered due to his onfield anger problems and his constant injury problems. Out goes yet another rookie defender in Lachie Henderson. They're dropping like flies!
In: Croad, Lewis, Mitchell
Out: Thomas Murphy (finger), Cameron Stokes (omit), Travis Tuck (jarred knee)
Some key inclusions here. I know a fair few people took Cam Stokes, and I hope their satisfied with his current price because I think that's the highest its going to get! He was always going to be temporary proposition in the depleted hawthorn side. Travis tuck is out with a knee, and we can speculate as to how long he'll be out for, but I really doubt that anyone can say definitively.
Mitchell is probably the cheapest he will be all season, and we have a thread just to talk about him.

Melbourne v Carlton
Int (from): Lyden Dunn, James Frawley, Colin Garland, Mark Jamar, Chris Johnson, Brent Moloney, Matthew Warnock
In: Frawley, Garland, Moloney, Warnock.
Out: Brad Miller (suspended)
About the only person in this list worth any consideration is Colin Garland. But it seems that Cale Morton is the only Melbourne youngsters who will be getting regular games at this stage.
Interestingly, Wonawhatshisname was named in the forward pocket.
Int (from): Dennis Armfield , Jordan Bannister, Adam Bentick , Shaun Grigg, Adam Hartlett , Setanta O’hAilpin, Darren Pfeiffer
In: Armfield, Bentick, Hartlett
Out -
Pfeiffer named on the extended bench ala last week. I for one am hoping he plays.

WESTERN BULLDOGS v RICHMOND
I/C (from): Adam Pattison, Chris Hyde, Cleve Hughes, Daniel Jackson, Greg Tivendale, Luke McGuane, Shane Edwards
In: Tivendale, Hughes, Jackson
Out: -
Joel Bowden is a no-show. Wouldn't look at any of those named on the extended bench.
I/C: Addison, Minson, Eagleton, Harbrow, Street, Ward, Skipper
IN: Skipper, Street, Ward
OUT: -
I'll pass on this one too. Although I think Dylan Addison has done enough to earn his spot for at least another round.

WEST COAST V PORT ADELAIDE
I/C from: Masten, Spangher, Kennedy, Fletcher, McNamara, C.Jones, Schofield
IN: Embley, Fletcher, Chad Jones, Kennedy, Schofield, Wirrpanda
OUT: Hansen (hamstring), Staker (concussion), S.Selwood
Scott Selwood is a big-name omission. All I can say is... We told you so!
I expect the Interchange to be finalised as follows:
Masten, Kennedy, Schofield, Fletcher
With Hansen out, Kennedy and Cones will be vying for the tall forward place. I really want to see The Fridge make his AFL debut. Selwood will be replaced by either Spangher or Schofield. I rate Spangher very highly but expect to see Schofield given an opportunity.
The last two spots will be between Masten, McNamara and Fletcher. We dropped Fletcher because of his lack of work ethic, so I hope that his inclusion means he has will respond to his wake-up call. I'm quite sure that he wouldn't have been named if he wasn't going to play, so I believe that he will come back in and the other spot will be between Masten and Jmac. I'm frustrated because McNamara hasn't really been given nearly enough opportunity to prove himself, and I believe he's been great from the limited chance he's been given. But I feel that Masten is in favour, and he will probably get a fair few games this season. Sigh.
I/C from: Stewart, Chaplin, Logan, Thomson, White, Pearce, Krakouer
IN: Krakouer, Logan, Thomson, White
OUT: Thomas (foot)
Hmm, nothing really exciting here.

Re: Week 5 Teams - Discussion

Great work Beau - I'll just add my bit re: Saints

Team changes:
St Kilda IN: C.Gardiner, Armitage OUT: Gehrig, Fiora

Charlie Gardiner returns after a decent first round appearance, after which he was dropped for Gehrig's return. I am doubtful that either player will hold a permanent spot so both would be risky options for DT or SC.

Armitage is interesting - he has been doing a lot of the hard in and under work, dishing balls out to free players. When given a run on the ball, he gets a lot of possessions, but mainly handball disposals. Makes up for it by making a ton of tackles. No guarantees that he'll be in the side in two or three weeks time, but he should perform the function of a cash cow quite adequately while he's there.

Fiora is an interesting omission, he has been a disappointment for the Saints fans this year after burning out of the blocks last year, but if any game suited him - the Essendon game was it. If Armitage performs to expectations then Fiora may have to wait on an injury before getting another chance.

Essendon IN: Lloyd, Monfries, Welsh OUT: McVeigh (hamstring), Lonergan (hamstring), Peverill

Peverill's omission is a surprise because he traditionally performs really well against the Saints. With Lonergan and McVeigh out, and only Monfries to come in for them, Peverill seemed secure to me. I expect Welsh and Lloyd to go into offence. I'll let the Essendon experts have their say, but I consider Lloyd a premium player - the big query to me is whether his injury is something he will carry or that he can build his season from now. The price is good, exceptional really. The risk is high though.

F: Akermanis, Johnson, Welsh
FOLL: Hudson, Cooney, Griffen
I/C: Addison, Minson, Eagleton, Harbrow, Street, Ward, Skipper
IN: Skipper, Street, Ward
OUT: -
NEW: Callan Ward, Selection No.19 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft, from Western Under-18s

Both teams with extended benches should remain unchanged after last week. Ward has been very classy for Willi but should miss out.

From a DT perspective Harbrows remaining in the team is important as he will provide the second small forward option which releases Hill up the field. If Harbrow is out Hill's scoring capacity is reduced. Cross has an exceptional history against the Tigers and is a captain option with one small concern. West out means Cross will get the in and under job as opposed to a floating mid in the back half. Cooney should get the number 1 tag and Boyd to Foley.

Callan and McMahon should score well as they will be keen to prove their worth as one has taken the others role.

Simmonds should have a mobility edge on Hudson / Minson and score well around the ground.

Richo's role will be interesting after 141 points on the wing pushing forward last week. May possibly start there with Hargreave / Wight likely opponents but the Tigers will be keen to push him forward to expose the Dogs height issues down back. Should score very well.
