Welcome to No Passengers - a weekly thread for Dream Team enthusiasts.

The No Passengers ideal is as the name implies - to make every player count.

The No Passengers philosophy applies to your Dream Team - to make every player earn his place in your squad through either producing the scores you desire, or by increasing in value so that you may upgrade other players (with the aim of filling your squad with as many premium players as possible).

The No Passengers philosophy also applies to your Dream Team league, where every league member is a dynamic component in a team. It recognises that no league can afford to carry non-performers.

Each week in No Passengers we would like to discuss topics like value players for trades, Captain selection, Rookie players, future trades and Individual player critiques.

To start with follow the links to see Player Critiques on:

Brent Stanton (week 3)
Brett Burton (week 3)
Travis Johnstone (week 4)
Sam Mitchell (week 4)
Heath Scotland (week 5)
Daniel Cross (week 5)

Also we have a short discussion on the Choice of Captain and a discussion thread

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Yeh, bad analogy. Disregard it completely. Different positions, different players, forget I said it. I think Ports golden run at the back end of last year may also have helped Cassisi. I think at a similar price Scotland and Mitchell are in front of him at this stage given their proven record over the past 2 years. One5 is going to do a player summary on Scotland this week or next which might help us clarify that one.

Yep agree with you there. Port did dominate towards the end of last season, although they havent won so far this season and he is still doing ok.

Im going to mull over him for the next couple of days, probably wont end up getting him, as Mitchell will be around 350k in 2 weeks time anyway. But if Mitchell and Cassisi end up averaging similar scores, ill be kicking myself, as Cassisi is unique and Mitchell will have 30,000 selections in a few weeks.

if they end up averaging similar scores, it wont really matter that one is more unique then the other

I agree. Far too much emphasis is put on having unique picks. Players are often left alone by the majority of coaches for a reason... Darren Glass or LRT anyone??

Even when "everyone has the same team", there will be 5-8 variations between most teams. No point being individual if your "unique" pick is lagging 20 points per game behind the player that most other coaches have in the same position.

I appreciate the satisfaction you receive when your unique pick goes nuts (not Barry Hall nuts, but stats nuts), but it's secondary to getting the best, consistent scorers into your team.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

This is actually for SC for my situation but it is still very relevant to DT. I have Proud, S.D.Thompson and L.hansen in my backline. Obviously all 3 are not playing and i will be a man down for the 2nd week in a row. I thought Proud might be close to selection this week but he was not even an emergency. No idea why SDT and Hansen can't get a game and i don't know who is more likely to get a game out of those 2. Lucky i didn't trade last week because i would have got either Taylor or Selwood and look were that would of got me. Wonamerri (not sure on spelling) is basically the only option if i am going to trade.

Just wanting some thoughts on either copping the 0 for a few weeks until an upgrade is possible or trading for Wona and getting hopefully 50-60 points per round.

Also can anyone clarrify is Wona will have to go back to the rookie list, and when that is likely to be, once the person he on the long term injury list comes back.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

"Whelan said the exciting 19-year-old from the Northern Territory was making the most of his opportunities since he was promoted in the absence of the yet-to-debut Jack Grimes, who has been placed on the long-term injury list due to a back injury."

Jack Grimes Estimated return Round 8 (injuryupdate.com.au)

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

ok hey guys, i just wanted some ideas on who to trade. my options

Proud - Wonnameiri
Scott DT- Wonna

I have 24,900 in the bank at the moment, but in a few weeks, i want to trade

Jones- Mitchell

so if

I trade proud to wonna,it gives me 65,200, which allows me around 350,000 to get mitchell (predicting jones to be around 285,000), and looks gettable. then i could trade west down to a rookie, and that would give me a 40,000 head start on my next upgrade

If i trade thompson to wonna, it gives me 35,200 which allows me only 320,000, and to get mitchell i would need to downgrade west to a rookie, and even if west rises to 115,000, it would only give me 66,700, but then would have to rely on west rising.

There has also been some talk on the Melbourne board about a possible mid-year retirement for Yze. Bailey may in fact be encouraging this by playing him in the 2s.

Yze is on the veterans list and if he retires this frees up a place for a permanent elevation for a rookie, be it Wonamerri or Valenti. Apparently Wonamerri serves their needs better at the moment because of his style of play and pace.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Disappointing week as far as selections go. Anyone suffering in their backline?

I have a full 22, but I'm disapointed that Coughlan got delayed again. At this point I have no chance but to keep him on the bench; I don't have the funds to upgrade him fully (well I do, but no point in upgrading him now as I would have an 'extra player' in my midfield) and no rookie screams for it anyway except Wona who is in my backline.

Similarly I have Proud and Scotty DT sitting in the backline and not doing much. But I like the look of Proud and as for Scotty DT...not going to trade him out. Who knows, when backline rookies get named or not named. Tsk.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

I'm not sure of the value of the Wonamerri trade. I want something surer.

I think even if he only plays until round 8, hell rise to about 170k, which is 100k more than SDT is going to make you. But I think the Dees will find a way to keep him in the team for longer than that.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

I think trading from a higher price is a better option. Keep Scott DT and trade Hurn, Barlow, Proud, Grundy and all those 150k-220k defenders otherwise there is no benefit.

He should get at least 3-4 more games which should be enough to downgrade him or one of your other bench defenders to Myers later on in the season.

I would definitely not be banking on that. I currently have NJBrown and SDT on the pine, am going to rid one of those 2 for Woenamerri, in the end its only a 20k difference so I may keep NJB, who will get his 30-40 points a round. Better than SDTs big fat donuts.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

3-4 games isn't bankable... I'll have to give it a rethink. I can't see Grimes coming off the injury list early. With Neitz and Robertson struggling up forward any avenue to goal is a welcome one. I shall wonder over to the Melbourne Board to see if there is any good juice on Winona.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

You are all missing the point.
It is not about how fast J.Grimes recovers from injury or when or if A.Yze retires or anything like that.
It is all about the competition for his spot.

This is the Melbourne team for this week:
B: Matthew Whelan, Nathan Carroll, Daniel Bell
HB: Paul Wheatley, Jared Rivers, Cameron Bruce
C: Brad Green, Brock McLean, Clint Bartram
HF: Cale Morton, Russell Robertson, Colin Sylvia
F: Aaron Davey, David Neitz, Austin Wonaeamirri
Foll: Jeff White, James McDonald, Nathan Jones
I/C (from): Lynden Dunn, James Frawley, Colin Garland, Mark Jamar, Chris Johnson, Brent Moloney, Matthew Warnock

M.Bate, S.Buckley, R.Petterd, I.Weetra, M.Newton, P.Johnson and J.Meesen are not even listed on that 7 man bench and they are all likely to play more games this season, especially the former two players, Bate and Buckley.

Basically, there are 7 players who are not even listed and 7 players on an extended bench all eyeing down 2 positions on the field.
There will be injuries as well but that looks like too much competition for a rookie who has not shown anything spectacular as of yet.

As Kildonan said, he is too risky and i am also not sure enough on him.

My Decision: PASS

Unless you are desperate to make $30,000-$80,000 with a quick price rise, then there is no point picking him up.
A trade is worth more than that.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Nice theone5. You have swayed me.

If not Winona, and knowing we have to cash in on our back reserves sooner or later, then who are the big names to target in the future?

If not Winona, and knowing we have to cash in on our back reserves sooner or later, then who are the big names to target in the future?

The sad thing is, there are not many, hence the reasoning behind my one and only trade which i made two weeks ago:
OUT: M.Whelan
IN: A.Carlile

I picked up AC as a guaranteed player for me who i plan on keeping as a permanent back-up as the season reaches an end.
Obviously, plans can change.
For instance, if A.Carlile reaches a price tag of $250,000 or above, he would be trade bait.
However, i plan on keeping him as a back reserve as this is the most depleted section i have ever seen.

I just need J.Anthony and S.Thompson to start playing for me and earning me cash.
As a Kangaroos supporter, what is happening with S.Thompson?

To answer your orignal question, these are the top three rookies who may come into consideration in the next few months, in no specific order:
J.Neagle (Essendon)
N.Lower (Port Adelaide)
L.Hansen (Kangaroos)

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Myers won't be getting a go at your club?

On Scott DT I think with Gibson going down this was his chance to forge his way back. Average form in the VFL.

Sinclair, Smith, Lower and Gibson will/have returned. He will need to work very hard to displace members in the 22. Harding, Power, Watt and Brown are player for 2 and a half positions and he would be slightly behind them I'd suggest with McMahon, Riggio and Urquhart.

D.Myers will debut this year.
EVENTUALLY.
I just think that he will take time.

Our team has a lot of depth this year which is great to see but with so many other youngsters with bigger bodies and more games under their belt ahead of him, he will need to show some bloody good form in the VFL just to get considered.

Knights coached Bendigo last year so he is rewarding a lot of the reserves players of last year, such as R.Dyson, B.Houli, K.Reimers, etc, etc.
J.Neagle looks ready.
He wil debut sooner than D.Myers.

That is just my own personal opinion so do not take it as gospel.

Like we said, there is no one to get for S.Thompson but even he will struggle to get a game so i have no idea what to do with my backline now.
???
Eeek.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

was david myers not injured?

Yes, i think he too was a victim of the Bombers Hamstring curse.

The players bolded are positions that can be replaced by these players coming back into form, or back from injury.

Buckley had his chance, gone. Weetra wont get a game again all season. Newton, Johnson and Meesen are all talls and will not be replacing Woenamerri.

Bate I see as the only threat, but on form, there are others he will replace.

I believe Woenammeri is definately worth the risk. He will hold his spot until he is back on the rookie list. It would be interesting if we had a Dees supporter's perspective on this though.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

I really believe the option around AW depends on your current backline structure ATM. If you are going from bench rookie to bench rookie it's an obvious no. If you have a non-performing mid ranger (Hurn, Nicoski etc) it's borderline dependant on the rest of your backline.

When Bowden returns next week I have 7 players playing and Brown on the bench. Hurn is the non-performer.

AW will free up a vital 140K given the current mids / forwards value on offer.

I expect him to play 3-4 more which if he does will make 100K. Bailey will want to have a close look at him before he returns to the R.L to assess plans for future elevation. He can play other rookies later in the year to assess them but does not have this luxury with AW.

Having said this, if he is dumped in a couple I have the luxury of Brown as a backup (admittedly low performing) until another option arrives.

If you do not have a bench backman playing the risk is far greater.

IMO I would only bring him in to free up cash, not to switch for a non playing rookie.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

One5, given your Bomber knowledge I'd be interested in you thoughts on the likelihood of Reimers holding his place for the next 4-6 weeks given the St Kilda epidemic sweeping through Bomberland. As you say, Knights knows him from last year and he appears to be in favour.

Well, from what i have seen of K.Reimers, he will go close to playing all 22 games this season.
A hard runner which compliments our style, a true goer at the ball and versatile player in most positions.
I hope that answers your question.

My question is, what do i do with J.Anthony and S.Thompson when i already have J.Bowden and A.Hartlett in my team?
It is doing my head in.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

I think in your situation you really need to pull the trigger. Trades are important but 0s are only sutainable for so long.

Given your concerns about AW, you may want to look at downgrading a forward / mid to Reimers / McKinley / Masten and upgrading a back rookie to a premium. Solves most of your problems when Bowden returns this week and if Hartlett starts getting a game you have a sub as well

The problem is, it is too hard to find the money to make a trade of a rookie to a premium back.
I need an extra $180,000 to make such a trade as i already have $80,000 in the bank.
My only option would be to release N.Brown or W.Tredrea but i think they are both yet to hit their straps.

Re: The No Passengers Discussion Thread

Just a few thoughts.

These guys aren't ready to go bang yet. But consider them. B/E's from FF Genie.

Steve Johnson
Total drop so far: $59,500
Break even: 102 (Ave 95 last season)
Opponent: Sydney - Ave 85 in the past 3 games against them.

Could do worse then SJ, hot form must be just around the corner. Just a pity he's got Sydney this week. He'll ripe next week, but if you need a replacement for Hall then SJ's price isn't going to drop all that much more from here.

Tarkyn Lockyer
Total drop so far: $54,600
Break even: 97 (Ave = 101 last season)
Opponent: Kangaroos - Ave 90 in the past 3 games against them.

Dunno about Tarks. Not as a juicy as he was last year when he was a named as a defender. But none the less he has averaged over 100 in the past and you gotta love blokes that can do that.

Nick Riewoldt
Total drop so far: $46,000
Break even: 124 (Ave = 99 last season)
Opponent: Essendon - Ave 111 in the past 3 games against them.

Due for a big one. Gehrig out of the team might mean he plays deeper. Less marks more goals? I dunno. As his DT coach in the past i prefer him pushing up and get a ton of marks and kicks.

Kane Cornes
Total drop so far: $41, 800
Break even: 125 (ave = 107 last season)
Opponent: West Coast - Ave 102 in the past 3 games against them.

Gun. Get him in if you don't already. You might only have this week or next week to get on Kano. How can you argue with a bloke that's averaged 107. Playing a West Coast team that's yet to figure out the new dynamics of it's midfield.

Peter Burgoyne
Total drop so far: 15,900
Break even: 66 (ave = 89 last season)
Opponent: West Coast - Ave 84 in the past 3 games against them.

Shattered he's still got that 142 sitting in his system. But at least it gives you faith that he's got the ability to score big. I'd strongly consider PBurgoyne if you don't have the patience to sit out Bowden's banishment. Last year's winner Peckin Away pull the trigger on Bowden to PBurogyne last week. Solid move as I copped a zero for it and had a 400K+ doing ____ all on the bench. Also consider that Bowden will be asked to be more defensive when he gets back in to the tiges team as that was why he was dropped in the first place. Might be the end of the DT backline legend.
