Craid Bird was clearly one of our best last night. He played 4 good quarters which was great for us as he was our standout running player.
I don't feel he is respected by the opposition as he never seems to be picked by one on one opponent.St Kilda quickly shut down Moore after the first quarter in the midfield but they seemed to just let Bird run around on his own.He got possessions on the flanks with no one anywhere near him.
It's disappointing as the kid is becoming a very good team minded footballer. He still has work to do in the gym but I can't for the life of me understand why he is not accounted for by the opposition.I'm sure the Hawks saw what he is capable last night and he may be find it more difficult next week but it will be a great experience for him.
He was very impressive against the saints!(one positive from the match)

Moore was shut down, you don't need to shut down someone who carnt get the footy.

Who are you reffering to that didn't get the footy bedford?

bercause he is a second year player, who maybe averaged 50-60% of TOG

mcveigh and goodes run through there

and before last night..... there were still doubters of bird on this board, let alone opposition

but he's a bloody beauty nonetheless :)

If they don't have respect for him, he'll rack up posessions and have a good impact. Win for us, who cares?

Total gun.

Love the way Bird goes about it. Very Swans-esque as he can go in and win his own ball and is good in tight and dirty but is also quite skillful and is quicker than i reckon the opposition give him credit for. Too bad he doesnt fit under the Rising Star criteria anymore cause i reckon he'd be up there with the contenders this year.

Side Note: when looking at the Rising Star stuff i saw that the last 2 winners of the award were picked no. 7 in their drafts, Palmer (2007) and Selwood (2006). If Daniel Rich wasnt a certainty before, he must be now!

Bird was one of our best against Saints, and one of the very few real shining lights for us.
He seems to have gained pace, and he certainly moved through traffic with more dash and, importantly, more composure, although that's probably from experience gained in his first year.

But if he continues to be our best midfielder, don't worry, he'll find himself very popular with opposing players. Marc Murphy, in his second year at Carlton, suffered from being the standout in a crud midfield.

Who was Birds direct opponent?

I can't answer that, sorry. Is that really bad of me?
I'd have thought, going on our midfield rotation, his "direct opponent" might have changed, and in fact Bird's role on the night might have changed as the game wore on. The concept of "direct opponent" is not always relevant these days.
If Bird had one, and was meant to play a negating role all night, that to me is an indication of an erroneous game plan, or at least an inflexible one.

To go back to the ONLY point I was making: he looks faster and more elusive with the ball this season.

If you're saying he was away from his direct opponent all night, and therefore somehow was not a good player on the night, I call bullshit.

We had 22 blokes out there and Bird was better than at least 16 of them.

Is that sufficient?

no, its not bad of you at all, no need to get all narky and defensive mr pb,(the op brought up the subject) I just wanted to compare his opponents game and I thought you sounded like you knew what you were talking about and might have known.
also I like youre fancy answer that tells me absoloutley nothing, but very well written all the same...:thumbsu:

btw, whats erroneous? wasnt she a greek goddess?

Erroneous Monk was a really ordinary jazz musician, never got beyond his bedroom.
His cousin, Thelonious, on the other hand ...

I actually rated him the best player on the night in POTY. Check it out if you don't believe me.

and here i was thinking barry hall was our best ( i mean his 8 disposels and 1 goal against the awsome might of zac dawson was an unbelievable effort).

bird was good one of our best, but i don't think opposition coaches are going to start tagging him before goodes, mcveigh. don't think it's out of lack of respect however.

only just checked his stats from over the weekend......

bloody good effort.... 26 touches from 69% TOG

could become a real major ball magnet for our side if he playeyed more minutes

My respect for this kids gone up another level after he was in the hands of the trainers hurt, pushed the trainers away to lay an important tackle, great stuff, thats fighting spirit...:thumbsu:

I love him more with every roll of tape that goes onto his head.

Yeah, but did you notice how many times the commentators banged on about how courageous Luke Hodge was for, "coming back on to do something for his team?" No such accolades for Bird's effort - very annoying.
