I only have time for late 80's-early 90's rap.

Rap these days is nothing more than a get-rich-quick money making scheme. At least the guys back then had substance, and most of it come from the heart, rather than the hip pocket.

If I had to pick, Tupac quite easly, with "Biggie" second.

I ran a poll almost identical to this a while ago (no Nas in mine though)

I'd say Biggie. Had the best flow of all time and just made awesome tracks. Tupac was a studio gangsta who is primarily respoinsible for all the gangsta rap sh*t on today's radio stations.

Nas - toughy, because Illmatic is one of my favourite albums ever, and Stillmatic was awesome too, but he's released a lot of crap and tends to jump on fads.

G Rap - no doubt has awesome stuff, probably rate him behind Biggie and in front of Nas - and miles in frotn of Pac.

Seriously, Tupac has like 4 or 5 songs I like - but generally he sh*ts me to tears. I'd rate by top 10 rappers as follows:

1. Biggie
2. Jay-Z
3. Rakim
4. Pharoahe Monche
5. Talib Kweli
6. Icon the Hologram aka Vinnie Paz
7. Black Thought
8. Common
9. Jean Grae
10. Big Daddy Kane

As far as skill goes, early early Nas, and Biggie are way on top. Tupac was an icon as a person, but didn't have the skill to be one of the best 'rappers'. As far as the culture goes however, he was the most significant.

He was the most significant as far as commercialising and mainstreaming Hiphop. He was the biggest ever figure in Hiphop - even bigger than eminem - yet most Hiphop fans I know, and most people that were listening to hiphop when he died, still rate Biggie as being the better artist.

As an artist im definately going to have to go with Biggie, he is up there with my favourtite of all time, especially with the small amount of music that he released, unlike 2pac who was a Rap machine and just kept popping out track after track.

Just read that other one rick and you rated Kool G number 1.

Whats changed?

rJ: I was listening to G Rap a lot at the time. Especially on a Jedi Mind TRacks song that I like - listening to G Rap makes me feel like a big man. It's childish and makes me a bit of a nerd, but simply, if you don't feel tougher listening to G Rap, you must be deaf.

FWIW - Big L was potentially going to be the best ever but was killed too soon. Noone was better at a punchline than L, and he had a cool flow.

I assume the 87 in your name relates to your year of birth, making you 7 when Tupac died.

How can you claim he had substance? the guy is fundamentally responsible for the glorification of gangsta rap, and was nothing but a pop puppet once he signed with Death Row. A backup dancer made good, nothing more.

If you hate the get-rich-quick-image-more-important-than-talent type rappers of today, point the finger at Tupac. He laid the foundations of it.

Big wrapps for ICE CUBE..one of my definate favourites, has been since i first bought the album "Straight outa Compton" back in 94'...massive talent

Here is a top 10 for you.

1. Biggie
2. Jay Z
3. Nas
4. Big L
5. Common
6. Ghostface
7. Talib Kweli
8. Lord Finesse
9. Vinnie paz
10. Brother ali

That list is basing on what I have heard, and what was present at the time I started listing to hiphop. THere is no doubting that Rakim and BDK and Kool G rap influences on hiphop were huge but They were a bit before my time (i was born in 87 and started listing to hiphop in 94) so there is no point including them in my list as they didn't have ag reat impact on ME.
Also rick james how can u put Vinnie paz ahead of Common. Don't get me wrong vinnie paz is one of my favourite rappers but his lyrical abilitiy (especially in recent years) has gotten more and more average its more about the way how he delivers it, how he sounds on the mic and the fact he can get away with things like " I'm gonna beat you till you ain't ****ing gay no more"
and stuff like that,

It's his sound more than anything, he is now way near as good as common lyrically, or even with his flow. But his sound and pitch is almost perfect. Though thinking about it, using htat basis I would consider bouncing him completely out of it to throw jadakiss in there.
