Name me a record company that has come up with a viable business model that takes multimedia into the 3rd millennium.

Apple iTunes Music Store, in cooperation with record companies has done just that. It will soon be available in Australia which will coincide with the time that there will no longer be any excuse to trade pirated, illegal music.

And this is coming from a vandal. Very appropriate.

I am not a vandal, and have stated categorically on a number of occassions that I have never stencilled an area that I dd not have the permission to do so.

Your abuse is becomming very boring.

I dont see what the difference is as only the quality has changed, and it wont stop as someone will always knows how to beat the system.

I never said that illegal activities such as pirating would ever be countered, history shows that the criminal minds never sleeps.

I was merely pointing out that it is in fact illegal, and anyone who partakes in it is a criminal (convicted or otherwise).

Pity that no one has mac's.

I'll stick to being a pirate, thank you.

It doesn't make you scum, just a criminal.

Not really, since I didn't steal anything in the first place, and the record company/artist profits when I go out and buy their CD. :) If I was using it to download and burn entire albums then it's a different story. I don't use Kazaa anymore, but I see nothing wrong with the way I used it before.

Actually the crime isn't theft, it's infringement on intellectual property rights ;)

Yeah but then again what about someone like Brian Wilson, who KNOWS (and the whole world knows) that every single Beach Boys fan owns at least one SMiLE bootleg, yet he's perfectly happy with that.

OR in the case of fans putting together their own finished versions of the albums, with tracks they put together themselves, what kind of ownership rules apply there? ;)

He may be happy, but does he own the copyright? I'm very happy for you too, but that doesn't make it legal ;)

That's fine...so long as you hold a legal copy of each individual track you put in there. Otherwise the RIAA is going to hunt you down and reveal you as the dark antichrist you apparently are  :D

<armchair_lawyer>

What rights does the RIAA have in Australia? ARIA? I believe it's a civil matter - as I believe it was in the US before the DMCA. Or is it still a civil matter in the US?

In that case the terms "criminal" and "thief" don't apply, no matter how much the RIAA wants to throw these emotive words around.

ahhh! :)

apple itunes works for both mac and pc...
huge success in the states... songs for just us 99cents..

this would be great..
however, if available to australia.. and knowing the cost of buying music here...

i seriously doubt we could buy songs for aud $1.27 each.. (us99c.)

i recommend the program, Winmx because it searches the songs very successfully and doesnt take hours to download it. The only problem is it takes up too many megabytes so i had to get rid of it.

i reckon bittorrent is the best program going around at the moment.
there's actually a few clients, but i've found the best one to be the ABC client - available here.
once you get that, open it, goto this page, click on whatever it is you want to download, and the client will automatically start downloading it.

just a few words of advice
- make sure you click on something that is 'seeded' (if something is 'seeded' it means someone has the complete file)
- recently added stuff goes fastest (best i've had is around 50k/s)
- it works best if you allow maxiumum uploads (which is ok if you have optus cable)

it takes a bit to get working properly (although it's not really that difficult), but once you do, i doubt you will go back to any other sharing program ;)
