I got this problem after I visited MSN News that full of Java flash crap on that site, the page kept spinning like it always does. I tried to close the browser but it was being a real pain so i tried ctrl alt delete then pulled the plug after it would not go to task manager or let me shut down. Has my Hard drive died or just a problem. I tried the Windows Vista disc but nothing has worked all though i have not reinstalled it from scratch as i do not want to lose the data. I did back it up a month or so ago but there is data i need that i did not recently backed.

I found this site on how to get data back from 2008 but the latest version Applications and places on Ubuntu you have to search for it is on dock and the terminal but of course it do not work like the how to do so. I get rubbish when i try to mount

Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error
Failed to calculate free MFT records: Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation

If you post that in English people might be able to help you a bit better ;) If you've just corrupted NTLDR you me able to just copy the file off your Vista CD (it's in the i386 folder), maybe try putting a Win PE on a CD or USB drive, booting off that and copy that file from a command prompt.

If not, you may just be able to install Vista over the top of itself.

Hi Dave how do I copy the NtLDR from the Dell Windows VISTA_SP1_HOMEPREMIUM Disc if it is on the disc. The Screen will not let me get pass that Ntldr is missing. I can not get to a Command Prompt. I looked into that Windows Vista disc on another computer but do not see any i386 folder. The only folder is efi, langpacks, support, upgrade, sources and boot. The boot file has bootsect, etfsboot and memtest and a file of Fonts and bootsect.exe.mui in folders.

Ok I looked into the other CD Dell Drivers and Utilities it has i386 folder but as usual no Ntldr file.

R166200 folder with IAAHCI and IASTOR with TXTSETUP.OEM

It also has DRIVER64 folder with the same and there is a folder ROBSON with X32 and x64 folders that both have IANVSTOR and NVCCOIN.DLL in them.
X64 folder has DIFX64 and DIFXAPI.DLL in it
APPLICAT has STORAGEU folder with pluginra in files and Raidwizm along with MIGRSTAT and ISDI.DLL files.
Help Folder with help files.
MONITOR folder with IAANTMON files and IAANOTIF
REMOVEDR folder with language files of it
ROBSON folder with SHELLEX,PLUGINRO.PIN,ISDI.DLL in Language folders.

R154164 folder same as above.

I have been plagued numerous times by this dreaded message in the last year on vista and xp. It is a real pain. You haven't lost anything on your hard drive, it's a problem with your boot record. There are ways to fix it. I'll have a look for what I did to fix it and see if I can find it.

From memory using another computer I had to make a bootable cd, then add a fix to it somehow.

If these instructions aren't to complicated follow them.

You do need a spare computer to make a bootable USB CD or floppy.

If its a bit complicated i can summorise it a bit easier.

It's a prick of a thing to fix. Just formatting windows doesn't fix it.

*edit* at the top of that link there's a link to a page for an easier way to do it with your vista cd. I have never tried that way, but might be worth giving it a shot first.

Thanks I try that. I already wasted downloading a ISO File made into a CD using Img Burn making a windows vista recovery disc that was exactly like the Windows Vista Re installation. I did the same There is only two options on Windows Vista Re installation, Windows Vista Install Now, that delete all files and folder, that I do not want that does a complete new install. The other option I did was that Repair your computer that goes into system recovery option that searches for Window Installations where it come blank.

There is four options they are start up repair while using that it says start up repair cannot repair this computer automatically. The other option there Windows Complete PC Restore that comes up with no Back Up available. The third option is System Restore that say something about it being offline and then there is a command prompt.

I have had this problem on 2 separate computers with xp, 1 with vista, and one on a dual boot computer dual booting windows 7 and xp. Whenever I unplugged the xp hard drive, windows 7 would boot, however whenever I plugged the xp hard drive in as well I would get this error and it wouldn't give an option to boot into windows 7. The error comes up before the dual boot menu. I tried single booting of windows 7 and repairing the boot record, changed the bios to boot of windows 7 hard drive first and still had no luck. I also tried a windows 7 DVD recovery with the dual boot, and also tried a vista DVD recovery with the vista computer. This fix was the only way I could get it going

In a nutshell, make a bootable cd. Set your bios to boot of that cd, then boot off the cd.

Try all of the ten options until one works (I think option 3 worked for me)

Then once in windows run fixntdl.bat. This makes it so everytime you boot your computer that menu will come up without the bootable cd in

Then to make it so you don't need to keep choosing the option that works for you, follow that last step, which makes your computer automatically choose the step for you.

Hi I downloaded that CD-R fixntldriso.zip then unzipped the file and put that ISO file in Img burn and write Image File To Disc. I did the 10 options then tried it out on safe mode none work. I thought the 3rd option was loading to work then it spitted out windows could not start because of an error in the software. please report this problem as load needed DLLs for Kernel. please contact your support person to report this problem.

Have you checked for a hardware (HDD/RAM) fault yet? Beyond that I'd be cutting my losses and rebuilding the thing. If you need data off it then throw the drive into another system and copy anything you need off of it.
