Riewoldt just said on SEN that he is pretty keen to carry on with #12 and make it his own.

...Indirectly he said....ive played over 100 games in 12 and would like to make it my own.

...he was asked about it by the club though.

...the papers reported that he had accepted the offer.

Why doesn't the club just leave him alone to do his own thing? First they force him into captaincy, now they want him to wear number one.

Bloody hell! Let him get on the field in a comfortable manner and help us win games.

They OFFERED him the opportunity to wear number 1, they weren't bloody forcing him to. I really doubt this occurance will have a huge impact on his playing career.

PS: He was also OFFERED the captaincy and he accepted. Do you really think they would force someone to be captain when they don't want to?

Fair enough regarding the number. But I do fully believe he was "encouraged" to take the captaincy. There was a popular opinion that it would turn him into Carey, what a joke! I am sure he was on record as saying he had to think long and hard whether to take the captaincy or not. That is not an ideal situation. How do you say no to the captaincy without looking weak?

Offering him the number one, and stating that to the media just piles more pressure on the fella and builds his personna larger than life. As an individual propersition it is not that big a deal but, in my opinion, Roo plays better without the weight of the club on his shoulders.

StKilda should keep this sort of stuff indoors.

So, was the Number 1 awarded on Tuesday night as the St Kilda website said it would be? If so, who received it? Obviously not Nick Riewoldt.

The club planned to award Nick Riewoldt the #1, but he decided not to accept it and retained his #12 as he's already played 100 games in it and made it his own.

It shows a degree of amateurism to have announced the handover without ensuring Nick would accept it. I want to see a greater degree of professionalism in all aspects of the club. Even the little things.

Now the #1 will be awarded to someone else, and that player will know that whole world knows he wasn't first choice for it. Not a big thing, but takes some of the shine off of it.
