So, where's his best position, where would you like to play him:
forward?
purely midfield?
a kirky job (defensiv midfielder)?
other?

well im stumped... wouldn't know where to commit him... well i better decide.... ONLY cos we have sufficient forwards, i'd like him as a defensive midfielder!

I agree that Jarrad McVeigh's best role is as a defensive midfielder. He has a huge engine and can go with most opponents. Like Brett Kirk he has the ability to negate the opposition player and then switch to an attacking role.

He is an ideal bench player in that he can rotate through the midfield, is dangerous up front and can play on the opposition small forwards in defence. If he can learn to read the play as well as Kirk, he will be a key part of our midfield for years to come.

I think that 2007 will be a breakthrough year for the class of 2002. McVeigh, Malceski and Dempster will by the end of the year all be important players for the Swans. Malceski is obviously the standout at the moment but I expect McVeigh and Dempster to also be there by season's end.

The only problem is where to fit them in with the depth we have at the moment.

Yeh... he had a bit of a slow start to his carrer in my opinion.. i remember keeping a close eye on him in his early years... i had alot of expectations .... think he was pick number No. 5? & i was not impressed! thought we wasted our early pick! hehehe anyways i never thought he would suit the defensive midfielder role, but he seems to relish the role.

& yeh the fact he looks natural in the fwd line is a big bonus!

hopefully things can only get better for him here on in!

I think he is a very underrated player. He should stay in the midfield but have a few minutes in the forward to sneak a few goals cause he is great at reading the play in the forward line.

i agree with all the above statements. He is underrated, and IMO, he'll be a key player in years to come. Probably the next Adam Goodes, he's an all rounder. Can defend (sort of), can kick and sneak goals and is such a stella of a player in the midfield.

As for Dempster, I'm not sure about him. Maybe we haven't seen the best of him just yet. The Eski is in, he can kick soo accurately i could scream my lungs out from sheer amazement. Deadly accurate kicker.

He was impressive during the pre-season NSO game at the start of 2005 where, with most of the senior team not playing, he was one of the main men through the midfield. What particularly caught my eye was his classy ball movement through traffic, something the Swans probably lack a bit at the moment. Kirk has the knack of finding his way through, and Buchanan is pretty good at ducking his head and bullocking his way through, but neither is in the class of the likes of Judd, Kerr and Cousins at carrying the ball through the packs. Goodes is sometimes does it, and is still learning his craft as a true midfielder, so there is hope for us there. Jude and Ablett are hopeless at it.

I'd like to see McVeigh spend more time through the middle to see whether he can find the ball enough and deliver some "inside class" that we are currently a little light on. It would be great to see him collect from Kirk, carry through traffic and then feed the ball out to the likes of Malceski, Dempster, Davis, O'Keefe, Schneider and Ablett (who I'd like to see play a little wider, with a bit more space) - all of whom have booming, penetrating boots on them - or Monty, whose kick may not be as penetrating but who always seems to find a target in the forward 50. His own kicking is pretty good too, so he has the potential to become a valuable player.

I think that because he was a high draft pick, the expectations were that he'd make an almost instant impact. Judd has a lot to answer for in raising supporters' expectations!! I'll be happy if he follows the Leo Barry / Brett Kirk / Ryan O'Keefe / Amon Buchanan development route.

He is a later developer. Midfield is his spot. Needs to improve skills by foot then could take an "Aker" type role.

He will have benefited enormously from 2006. He had a red hot go and got to play on some superstars. Cousins towelled him up... but for a young developing player he should be proud he was entrusted (initially) with the job.

I consider (more than hope) he and NOG will step up another rung in 2007

Now that McVeigh has honed his defensive skills, I think he could successfully play in a number of positions around the ground.

However, I've been most impressed by his forward play. He leads strongly and marks well, and he's not afraid to fly for a grab either. On top of that, his occasional flashes of sheer speed and brilliance roving in the forward line were as good as I've seen since Bartlett was at his prime.

It might have been a flash in the pan, but I'd really like to see him spend a season with lengthy rotations into the forward pocket, just to find out if he could be something extra special.

Liz paints a very nice picture.
He really impressed me last year. He's like Popeye and has been eating his spinach. Looked a LOT stronger in '06.
He's got flair and it was nice to see he'd lost the lair also.
Looking forward to 2007, I think he's a transition player, can tag, run through the midfield and sneak forward and be damaging.

In the midfield and then sneaking into the F50 to kick a few goals. Also he can do a good run with role so he has versatility which is handy.
