I thought Fremantle were very Dogs like in the way they ‘threw’ the ball forward at every tackle. My only question is - why aren’t we doing that?
I reckon we've got better - still not state of the art per the Dogs, but we've finally got with the program that you have to be bloody unlucky to be called for throwing (which indeed we did get lucky with that final illegal disposal free kick our way in the dying minutes! It was there, but given what they'd let pass, arguably Freo were tough).

You are 100% correct BUT I think the sideways/backwards clearance requires a plan B type of entry rather than the high hack.
Wider, possibly shorter, ie two or even three kicks to get inside 50. Requires the right reaction from wingers, HFF, possibly even HBF and the CBA midfielders plus the forwards leading to the right places at the right time.
Like everything else, they need to train for it.
I read somewhere that Carlton are one of the best at clearances, BUT, its usually Cripps, and it is not clean. So It means they are under pressure and it means they are just bombing it in. They win the clearances. They win the inside 50s. But they score bugger all.

Being at the ground, it was clear that this was at least partly an issue with lack of movement from the forwards (and to be fair it was brutally hot). On the plus side, the winning goal came from an outstanding kick to advantage from Jimmy R - when it counted, they finally got it right!
LOL I’ve never thought of Paddlebum as Jimmy R. For a moment there I was thinking “what, is James Rose back in the squad?”

I wouldnt say Warner Jr had a good to great game. I'd give him a C+. Lacks confidence still and very slow with his decision making. Missed targets regularly going forward and needed to keep his feet a few times when going to ground. He'll be better for the experience but he needs to lift and stop looking for the easy marks and kicks. His fitness is a big plus.
I can't defend a few sloppy moments but he wasn't alone. Still, gee Corey covered some serious ground in that last quarter, popping up at both ends of the ground, contesting hard. He laid repeat tackles, pressured, chased and used his fitness as a weapon. He may be the brother of Chad 's only at the same age/games as Sheldrick. I really like Angus but I know who I'd rather have on my side come the 4th quarter of a grueling game*

*OK, that's assuming Sheldrick doesn't come on as a sub in Q4

Hayward is getting better from a pretty slow start. That's the right direction to go

Better be doing solo goal kicking sessions for a week it’s terrible conversion

Haywards been awful, watch his prelim compared to 2025 so far, his pressure, tackling, he didn’t even score a goal, but took marks, created chances and worked hard to keep the ball in the fwd 50. He is a non factor currently

Will is one of my favourites but non factor is the perfect way to describe him so far this year 😔

Positives:
1. Ladhams - was a real positive for us. I thought the duo of rucks worked OK, but Pete just seems to give us more around the ground and can rest up forward. Was encouraging
2. Hamling. I watched him closely. No nonsense defender. Elite at reading the flight of the ball and getting to the contest and making an impact. Looks super solid and stiffens our backline up. Our backline looks sharper with him playing. Melican and Cunningham to come back - nice!!!
3. Campbell. Was solid and looks stronger and fitter this year. Looks confident. Is very important cog for us now
4. Jordan - our best for 3 weeks in a row. Just gets the job done.
5. Bice - will only get better - belongs at the level. Malceski mk11
6. Papley looked more lively today and his pressure was up
7. Wicks - his pace is unbelievable. Just gives his all

Agree wholeheartedly with Wicks. He looks transformed. Seems to be involved in more contests, has great closing speed and second efforts. His disposal has tightened up as well.

Feels like he had all this previously, there’s just more of it now and a little more polish on the disposal.

Every team and coach has its "undroppable" players. If we are serious about having flag ambitions, Florent & Hayward cannot be "undroppable."
Yep.

Given we may not have anyone coming back in 1st week post-bye, at least we shouldn't rush anyone back, they probably have to play against North. Unless we keep Sheldrick and play Mitchell too (already factoring in Cleary for a ruck).

But if they can't get into some form against North, then that surely has to be it. It probably won't be, but it just has to be if we're serious.

Yeah we have some who don't belong on the list then.

Do we have any other medium talls to replace Hayward if we dropped him? Or do we go 3 talls and 3 smalls? Fox?
Not sure we need to replace Hayward with another medium if he's not performing anyway. Could go 2 talls, 4 smalls or 3 and 3. If Buller was more accurate on the weekend, he'd be a more mobile tall that could address 2 roles as a 3rd tall, then the rest smalls.

There's Bowman with 1 VFL game and looked rusty/quiet coming back from injury, so not ready right now (and may not be ready in his first year anyway).

Fox as more a defensive medium when he's back maybe, probably not kicking too many goals, but then we're not getting a lot from Hayward either.

Or when Mills is back, he's a good kick for goal, an option while getting back into fitness/touch, or he could allow a Heeney or Chad to spend a bit more time forward.

Now that Wicks has moved down back, I wouldn't be surprised if Hayward has been playing as the defensive forward again which has impacted his output. If we reintroduced another defensive forward into the rotation it may release Hayward to being more productive again.

Doesn't excuse his horrific shots at goal though

Or that this isn't some uncommon thing for Will. He's gotten away with long patches like this before.

This isn't to say it's permanent, it hasn't been before, but we have to acknowledge that everyone can be dropped in order to set standards and allow the player to regain form in the VFL.

I reckon Mills would give us way more than Hayward as a medium forward.

But also, if the price of a medium forward is having someone like Hayward in the team, I'd rather just not pay. Get creative and structure the forward line differently. There's nothing Hayward does that Mills or McDonald even couldn't do when they return.

In his defence, Hayward did battle away well, under duress at times, in the 2nd half of last year.

As I said, he will and probably should get 1 more game against North, given we'd possibly be rushing players back to replace him or keeping Gus in the side which hasn't been earned either (while bringing Cleary in for a ruck).

But has to be "droppable" after that.
