With all due respect, there is literally no benefit for the player to do that. It is much easier for a player to move whilst out of contract. For starters, why would they want their new club to pay more in trade compensation for him because he's contracted? That doesn't help his new Club at all. This isn't a bleeding heart scenario. Players are selfish. They want the best deal for themselves, they don't care about the Clubs once they decide to move on.

Even if he wanted to leave to go back to Victoria, and a trade couldn't be finalised, Port would have given him a further extension if necessary.

He was so fixated on staying at Port that he didn't even entertain listening to other pitches from Victorian clubs who were lining up to present to him, before he signed his new contract extension. That does not in any way, shape, or form, suggest he's a player who is looking to leave.

Your hypothetical is so far out there that it is bordering on lunacy.

There is a first for anything and a mutual agreement may have occurred between Bergman and the Club.

By the way, was Duursma that keen to go home when we suddenly traded him for BZT? Or did we force the issue knowing that we were in desperate need for KPD's?

There's still 5 weekend's left until the season is over, if he's leaving we won't know until rd23 has started at best
yeah, i guess we will find out his intentions earlier if he re-signs, or a credible journo such as Twomey or Morris.

It would indeed be the first of its kind and it would be the kind of agreement that any player should be promptly firing their agent of. It would be, to be frank, an idiotic decision from the player's perspective, and only benefits the Club.

Would make a bit more sense if the player wasn't in high demand to give them security, but this is a player who was going to have multi million contracts presented to him if he said "I'm ready to come home to Victoria."

As for Duursma, the decision was a mutual one. I believe he got out of Ken's good books, and the Club were quite happy to facilitate a deal to move him on provided it benefited the Club (which it did with BZT). He's not a player I lament over thinking "geez the Club really let him get away."

Bergman manager and his firm would know asking for a trade this off season after signing a massive contract would be career suicide

I personally don't think it will happen anyway but definitely wouldn't be surprised if it does. Just using this exercise as a thought experiment.

I would hate to see Bergman go under any circumstance. But I am still a bit bitter after Duursma's abrupt departure.

Duursma wanted to leave prior and Port knew. They kept it quiet. Besides, I doubt Port saw that as a bad thing with him.

Pretty sure he's managed by Ben Williams, too.

Would have been much easier for the agent to facilitate a deal getting NWM to Port and Bergman to his Vic club of choosing in a (possibly multi team) trade if they both were out of contract.

Just think its reached a point where things must have plateaued in terms of his contract and options. If hes staying an anouncement should be imminent.

The price can always fluctuate depending in the coming weeks. Don't think it will be going down though haha.

I suspect it will be after the Saints BnF
He is probably going to walk away with the win in the bnf. So if he is leaving it will be an awkward time for him during the event. St kilda don't usually hold the event until a week after the granny. So a while to wait still for the news.

What's the latest he can sign on at St Kilda, just before the national draft?

If so, there's no rush to sign if he wants to see if there's an option to get to Port in trade week, which is how I think it's playing out behind the scenes.

If he really is on the fence then staying for a short-term might be his better option. Because if he chooses Saints and regrets it he can just come to Port in 2027, but if he chooses Port and regrets it he can never go back to St Kilda.

Which is why the Saints have shifted their best offer to be more than two years.

Saints board think they are going to announce his re-singing via a press conference with ross lyon 😂

Singing with Ross? "Saint Kilda's Got Talent", the Musical.

No need for him to announce anything until after the B&F, but he would have to get through the awkwardness if he wins and pretend to still be undecided, even though everyone will know that's not true.

It'll be similar to Houston last year, where any public comments until he's either re-signed or requests a trade don't mean anything (although in that case it was until he either was or wasn't traded in contract).

I can't recall too many uncontested B&F winners, or even top 10 finishers, waiting until after that to then re-sign. A lack of any confirmed news by round 23 will be a fair indication.
