From the age today:

Essendon decides on all-round revamp
Jake Niall
June 30, 2006

ESSENDON, seized with an urgency not seen since the late 1990s, has already started the task of revamping its football department in response to its worst season in Kevin Sheedy's remarkable reign.

Having identified player development, recruiting and sports science/technology as the areas crucial to the club's future success, the Dons have committed to three significant reforms:

■Recruiting manager Adrian Dodoro, whose talent-spotting abilities are well regarded at the club, will be removed of his welfare duties, with the club hiring a new welfare manager, allowing Dodoro to concentrate fully on recruiting in what looms as the most critical draft and post-season period in the club's recent history.

Essendon's wish to have its recruiting manager solely focused on finding incoming talent is also evident in the club's decision to have Dodoro relinquish his match-day duties, when he sits on the interchange bench and helps the coaching panel.

■Essendon has also decided to allocate one of its coaches to the position of development coach and is considering handing that portfolio to the coach of the Bendigo Bombers, former Richmond captain Matthew Knights.

Knights has impressed with his work with younger players, and would continue to coach Bendigo if he did acquire the development role.

The Bombers have taken the view that they need to reorganise their coaching structure, following the example of West Coast, which blazed a new trail by devoting (two) coaches solely to development.

■The Bombers are also reviewing ways in which they can gain an edge in sports science and other technology-based areas, trying to anticipate cutting-edge practices.

Whereas the recruiting and development changes are clearly a response to the club's poor results, this initiative was in train from the outset of the season, before the season turned sour.

The beefing up of welfare and development and, as a consequence, of recruiting, have been discussed for some time within the club, with the Bombers recognising that the structures that were so successful four and five years ago no longer suffice in the present environment.

The club is in the process of reviewing its football department — as it does routinely in the course of the each season — but the present review will be more vigorous because of the on-field performances.

Unless they win four of the last 10 games — an unlikely scenario — the Bombers will qualify for a priority draft pick, which will give them three picks inside the top 20 of what has been hailed as the best draft crop since 2001.

Dodoro will also play a key role in pursuing uncontracted players from other clubs, with Sheedy hopeful of securing a young uncontracted player via the pre-season draft

Seeing Dodoro week in week out on our bench this season has killed me. I don`t care how many contacts or scouts he has out and about around the country. He should be no-where near us on match day. He is head of recruitment for God`s sake. **** off Adrian, up the bush, interstate, anywhere.

Hmmmmmm a few people on this site have defended Dodoro being on the bench during games. Funny that our club has recognised it to be pure folly. Please remember that adelaide have 3 FULL TIME RECRUITERS and we are finally acquiring one. To be frank though this is actually a good move and Dodoro is going to need to get this draft right or he is in SERIOUS trouble. Our first pick is probably the toughest- which way will he go?
The only troubling aspect of these changes are that they should have been made a long time ago but better late than never.
PS I dont believe Daniel Wells will be at our footy club next year!

Priority picks are now only available after two consecutive years with less than five wins in each.

Charlie that is incorrect
The new rules state a club that wins on average 8 wins in a consecutive 2 year period will receive a priority pick BEFORE the first round.
If a club only wins 4 games in one season they will receive but more than 8 in 2 consecutive years will receive a priority pick AFTER round 1

Change to priority picks

In an effort to reduce speculation over clubs tanking for priority draft picks, the AFL has modified its special assistance rule.

Starting next season if a club finishes with 16 points (four wins) or less in one year, a selection prior to round two of the national draft will be allocated and only after two or more years of 16 points or less will a selection prior to round one be granted.

This would see a club that finished on the bottom of the ladder with 16 points or less given picks 1, 17 and 18 in the first year and if it qualified for special assistance again the following year, picks 1, 2 and 18. The club would receive the first pick in the pre-season draft in both instances.

Previously a club was awarded a priority pick before the first round of the draft if it finished a season with 20 points or less.

In a letter sent to clubs outlining the changes to the rule, general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson said the AFL acknowledged that a priority pick before the first round was "simply too much compensation for one year's poor performance".

"I think it's another step towards an uncompromised draft," AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said after the briefing club presidents on the changes.

"Of course it will reduce that speculation (over tanking), there's no doubt about that, but I think it will also reward perennial poor performers if they've had two consecutive bad years. That came pretty strongly through the clubs' submissions and I think we've come up with a really good and sensible plan."

As well as the tanking and overcompensation issues, Demetriou said the rule was modified because one year was not reflective of long-term poor performance and the previous rule had put mid-ranked clubs at an unfair disadvantage.

Absolutely agree. Up the bush, interstate, OUTBACK! You would not believe the impact Michael Long had, and still has, in many indigenous communities. The talent of these kids is unreal, and somehow many still see Essendon as the team to aspire to.

Fair enough. Cheers.

I dont understand why our latest drafting hasnt brought about any changes, if this was say the NBA or somewhere, and our head of recruiting was effectively drafting duds over the last 5 years, he would be moved on and we'd bring in new talent, except ours is praised and moved on to high responsibilities. This isnt the 'baby bombers' crop anymore, you know we just arent drafting like we used to, all the other teams seems to be able to find the stars in the later rounds of the draft, not us. Not to mention the signings of guys already in the system such as cupido, camporeale and cole which all have turned out fantastically . Just seeing that kick from Campo last night made me think why he was hired in the first place, he's recieving abilities and foot skills, and i think I almost punched the TV when he made that error.

I think its another big clear out year, and drafting/trading will be crucial to our success more than ever come this trade period.

People are forgetting bad drafting is not the reason we are bad this year, to be fair our drafting as of late has been good, it's the drafting in 1999-2001 that hurt us.

We are bad for two reasons, injuries and older players out of form.

MJ - Been playing better lately bad had a bad patch
Hird - missed half the year
Solomon - see MJ
Winderlich - injured at the worst time, was starting to make an impact
Ramanauskas - would really help us out
Peverill - past his best
Lovett - needs his head screwed on a little tighter
JJ - been unfit and out of form, only now showing signs of improvement
Campo - niggling injuries haven't helped
Lloyd - no need here
Laycock - was about to hit form before injury
Cole - way unlucky with injuries, would help out our depth immensely
McPhee - been very up and down
Rioli - his skill would help us a lot
