Re: Official GVFL thread

Sippawitz i can agree with NLF as i was at the game and it was absolutely disgraceful. I follow neither side but can tell you that i have never witnessed anything as bad as the display by those two umpires. I beleive that both clubs are putting in official complaints as the bad umpiring was most definately the cause of the brawl. It got very ugly and some members of the crowd began to get involeved. The GV need to ensure they make it attractive for potential umpires to get involved. If clubs can afford to pay big money for players maybe some of this money(through affiliation fees) should be used in the way of higher payments for umpires eg $250.00 per game. This might attract some extra candidates eg.. ex players who might be interested. Clubs might have to foot the bill if it is to improve. Anything would be better than the display at Deakin on Saturday. Shocking!!!!!
Fair enough. Thanks for that Yeehaaaaa.

How much does a senior GV umpire get paid ?

Re: Official GVFL thread

How much does a senior GV umpire get paid ?

Don't know - but on recent form I would say the league isn't getting value for money.

The GVFL is widely regarded as a pretty clean standard of footy with minimal 'thuggery', yet we continually see guys getting yellow carded or reported. I'm not suggesting all of these reports shouldn't have been made, but there seems to have been a lot more this year for a comp that I would still class as being clean.

The game at Deakin had a couple of players reported and yellow carded, however my mail is that at least one of these charges will be dropped.

Re: Official GVFL thread

hall wont coach, his times up but he doesn't wont to leave but the club wonts to move on.
So what are you saying will he stay on as a player at the club if they find a new coach.. Cos he would be a massive loss to the club if he didnt stay on as a player.. Would there be any chances of say either the Cambells or Norman given a go at the job.. Maybe joffa vandermeer

Re: Official GVFL thread

Hey Brad, don't suppose you could you post the shepp news articles for the weekends games please? Thanks.
Oh, and does anyone know if Seymour and United were at full strength or did they have any missing through injury?

Seymour steals the lead in top-two clash

Seymour squared its ledger with Shepparton United on Saturday, asserting its authority on the league ladder.
Taking top spot from United in the one versus two clash, the Lions edged out the Demons in a skilful display from both sides.
Sam Dawes took just moments to reacquaint himself with the Sherrin, getting United's first attempt at goal, but was unable to convert.
Teammate Duane Hueston mopped up moments later and secured the first major.
Tempers flared at the midway point of the first term, Lions midfielder Paul Scanlon reported and yellowcarded from the field.
But his departure worked to rally his teammates, pouring on four goals in his absence to take the lead at the 25-minute mark of the term, Saad slipping through three of his nine majors for the day.
"I thought it got us going into the game," Lions coach Bernie Haberman said.
"We were totally embarrassed last time we played them and wanted to redeem ourselves."
United turned up the heat in the second quarter, Michael Barlow racking up 26 possessions in the first half as ruckman Justin Sutherland also came into the fray.
By three-quarter-time the margin was back to just 17 points, Matt Forys kicking four of his six in the third.
Dawes kicked the first of the final term just 20 seconds in giving United a sniff, but calm heads prevailed for Seymour.
"The stoppages and their run off half-back was much better than ours, ours was reactive and defensive," Barlow said.
"They got under our skin early and it worked to their favour because we were always playing catch-up."

Bombers miss out on goals

Euroa took fourth place on the Goulburn Valley Football League ladder at the weekend with a crushing victory over Kyabram.
The Magpies never looked troubled despite being well outscored in the final term, picking up their 11th win of the season.
Spending most of the day at centre half-forward, ruckman Damon Clarke relished the change of scenery, booting six majors for the afternoon.
"He had a go," Magpies coach Dave Gleeson said of Clarke's performance.
"Because we were tall down there (in the forward line) we were able to isolate him.
"We wanted to play attacking footy and we did just that."
Kyabram wasn't without opportunity, however, having just two fewer scoring shots than Euroa.
"We kicked eight in the first quarter so we were always in front," Gleeson said.
"(But) it wasn't too bad a game given the positions on the ladder."
Bombers coach Josh Finn said while his players became spectators at time, the scoreboard didn't tell the full story.
"We just couldn't convert," Finn, whose side kicked 16 behinds, said.
"But our boys didn't drop their heads at all, they kept working."
Finn said Josh Vick was a standout, restricting Euroa forward Scott Grainger to just two goals for the afternoon.
"Scotty Grainger had no influence on the game whatsoever," he said.
Nic Casey was also good, kicking three goals, while Justin Chambers was effective in the back pocket.
Euroa once again finished the game without a bench, Harry Sleigh injuring his leg and Mark Clayton a shoulder.

Bears show their skill

Shepparton has salvaged some much-needed pride with an upset 25-point victory over finals contender Echuca.
The Bears showed they could compete with the better sides in the competition and play to their full potential if they had a crack, sending the Murray Bombers down the ladder into sixth position.
Good conditions at Deakin Reserve enabled both teams to play an attacking brand of football and move the Sherrin quickly and cleanly, with the Bears doing this better in the first half to grab a 26-point buffer at the main break.
Echuca became more direct into its forward line and Brad Smith continued to be a presence up forward as the Murray Bombers slotted six goals to four to narrow the margin to 13 points at three-quarter-time.
All the momentum appeared to be with Echuca as it got within less than a goal early in the final term, but goals to Ben Shiels, Anthony Mellington and Brent Chapman wrestled the ascendancy back into the Bears' favour to take the points 20.12 (132) to 16.11 (107).
Chapman and Shiels ended the afternoon with four majors apiece, as did Echuca's Smith.
Shepparton coach Mellington was brilliant all day, kicking three goals and filling holes in defence, his marking and ability to read the play outstanding.
Daniel McIntyre and Andrew Taylor gave Mellington plenty of assistance in defence, while Nick Allan, Jeremy O'Brien and Glenn Joyce collected plenty of ball in the engine room.
Smith was valiant all game for the Murray Bombers, while Adrian Dohnt continued to firm his chances of winning the Morrison Medal with another impressive performance.
The match was soured by a three-quarter-time brawl involving players from both sides, in which Matt Chapman was yellow-carded and had his number taken for striking.

Cats in `bizarre' turnaround

A Robert Osborne-inspired Mooroopna announced itself as the best team outside the six in what the club described as a `bizarre' win over Rochester on Saturday.
A dominant first quarter by the Tigers left a lethargic Mooroopna in its wake as it asserted a comfortable 34-point lead at the first change before the Cats produced one of the best turnarounds of the season.
"I've never been involved in a game like it before," Cats coach Derek Hall said.
"They had a bit of a breeze but their ball handling and their run was great and their guns were firing in the midfield.
"(But) It's amazing how things can change in an hour. At the quarter-time huddle we were despondent and at three-quarter time it was joyous."
Six goals down, Mooroopna was doing all it could just to stay in touch before Osborne produced his purple patch.
"He had a day out," Hall said of Osborne's 10 majors.
"We started him at full back because we wanted to try something different but we switched him back to full forward at quarter-time and left him one-out.
"He's the sort of player that if he's in that sort of form he's hard to beat."
Mooroopna could do no wrong as it ran out a 66-point victor, Shane Gemmill, Steven Cox and Blake Campbell outstanding.
"Our pressure and our defensive skills were as good as I've seen," Hall said.
Rochester was left scratching its head.
"We sat around after the game and said `What the hell happened?'," midfielder Heath Aitken said.
"It was disappointing to get off to such a good start and to fall away.
"(At one point) they kicked 17 goals before we scored a goal."
Aitken said his side mucked about with the ball too much, its skills letting it down.
"Everyone was good in the first quarter and everyone played badly in the last three," he said.
To further add to Rochester's woes, Daniel Schmidt went down with a suspected broken collarbone.

Saints fail to ruffle Swans' feathers

It was a case of lucky sevens for Shepparton Swans at the weekend, dishing up a 77-point win against Benalla.
Eleven major goal scorers contributed to the win, with coach Peter White all smiles after another polished display from his charges.
It took little time for the Swans to stamp their authority on the game, superior to the Saints with their strength around the ground.
"I was reasonably pleased with the guys," White said.
"We ran the ball well out of the backline.
"And we really finished off our quarters well."
Ruckman Jarrod Sutherland was in terrific form, commanding across the ground and Lucas White provided spark across the forward line and on the ball.
Rob Montgomery and Kane Uebergang also caused plenty of headaches for the Brenton Cooper-led Saints, while Nathan Bell gave his side added grit, returning after an ankle-related hiatus.
"We rested him in the last quarter but had he played all game he would have been in the best," White said.
"It's quite amazing really for him to come back and play like he did after being out for so long."
Bell has not played since sustaining broken bones and ligament damage to his ankle in round nine.
Benalla started the match looking sharp and continued that in patches with good form from Farran Priest, but could not match the multiple options which presented in the Swans' forward line.
"Our decision-making and skill errors really cost us at times," Saints coach Brenton Cooper said.
"I thought we got enough of the ball but our mistakes hurt us and a class side like the Swans will always make you pay.
"But there is definitely something for the club to work with in the future, with our mix of young kids and seven or eight senior players, if we can get a couple of big recruits over the summer we can be competitive with the top three sides."

Eagles' victory lacklustre

Mansfield notched an uninspiring 35-point victory against Tatura on Saturday to move to fifth place on the Goulburn Valley Football League table.
The Eagles went some way to erasing the memories of a shocking performance against the Bulldogs earlier in the year - Tatura's only victory this season - with a 17.12 (114) to 11.13 (79) win.
Returning star Trent Hotton managed to get through the game without a recurrence of a shoulder injury which had him in some strife, while premiership player Ben Millot recaptured some of his vintage form with a five-goal haul.
The Eagles' young brigade, led by Adam Boshevski and Jamie Sheahan with three goals apiece, was impressive and while the visitors were in control of the game for the majority of the encounter they never really threatened to blow their opponents away.
"It was one of those encounters where you're just happy to come away with the four points at the end of it," Eagles coach Peter Tossol said.
"In terms of a spectacle it wasn't overly impressive . . . but I suppose we've just got to be happy with the fact we won and it gave us the opportunity to move up the ladder."
Bernard Jones and Jarrod Mahoney found plenty of the football while Guy Taylor continued with his consistent season for the Eagles.
Paul Neville was the best for the Bulldogs, while Shane Kay, Jamie Jones and ruckman Tim Little worked hard.
Josh Gledhill and Little were the most damaging in front of goal, booting two goals apiece.

Injuries curtail Porter's career with Benalla

Benalla ruckman Mark Porter will not compete for the Saints next season after officially announcing his retirement.
The 199 cm tall confirmed his position with the club a month ago, after sustaining a second arm-related injury of the season back in round 12.
"He had a baby in February and even though he hasn't had any muscle type injuries, hamstrings or anything, he's had seven knee injuries during his time," president Gary Joyce said.
"And since he's been with us he's had a broken cheekbone, a broken wrist and now a broken hand, so he's decided it's time."
Porter underwent season-ending surgery after sustaining a knock to the hand during Benalla's clash with Shepparton United last month.
At the time he had been back in the Saints' line-up three weeks after breaking his left hand in round six.
The unlucky run has prematurely ended Porter's career, much to the disappointment of the Saints.
"He's been terrific," Joyce said.
"If he didn't get nine votes in the best and fairest those three games he was back . . ."
Joyce said Porter had continued his commitment to the club, despite not being able to contribute on-field, by helping coach Brenton Cooper from the bench.
"He drove up on Saturday and came to help us and he'll do that till the end of the year," he said.
"He's not going to pursue playing in Melbourne or anywhere else next year, he's going to spend time with his family."

Any players or coaches interested in changing clubs, moving leagues or moving interstate and are looking for clubs. Please PM me.

Re: Official GVFL thread

A k game and 100k a year salary and i'll think about it.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Givemehead - you are ineligible as he wants players moving interstate, so that puts you out on two counts. Surely you would not have been classed as a player last Sunday, and you are already interstate.

Very interesting stat this as the last three years the Granny has been won from third position. Might have to purchase a ticket on the Swans bus and enjoy the ales with all the other boys. Please send purchase price of ticket and stock the eskies boys, things are starting to hot up.

Seymour finished 2nd behind Benalla last year.
The previous two premiers finished the H&A season in third spot though.

Very true Brad, but if they happen to lose, then there out and it paves the way for either Euroa or Echuca to play off in that 2nd semi final.

I believe the final 6 is not a very a good system. A final 5 will be far better for the league. If it were a final 5. then the team that finishes on top gets a reward for having a week off.

As it stands at the moment, if the top team loses in the first week of finals, they go to a knock out final. Would be unfair if a team was to finsih on top by about 5 games one year and then happen to slip up 1st week of the finals.

Agreed. Final 6 is crap and it should a 5 teams, especially since the league moved to 12 teams.
