Reality bites for new Adelaide club

MELBOURNE

SOUTH Melbourne officially ended Adelaide United's National Soccer League honeymoon last night with a hard fought 2-1 victory at Bob Jane Stadium.

After attracting sell-out crowds and sailing through its first three matches unbeaten, it was United's second straight loss after a 4-1 defeat by Perth last weekend.

And it was a former Adelaide player - centre-back Ante Kovacevic - who proved the undoing of the team which replaced his former club Adelaide City in the NSL this season.

Kovacevic scored a goal in each half - both headers from set pieces - to give South a 2-0 lead.

Adelaide was unlucky not to come away with at least a draw after dominating the second half, eventually pulling one back through Carl Veart in the 69th minute.

Former Socceroo midfielder Aurelio Vidmar was outstanding for United.

South moved into second place with the victory, just ahead of Parramatta Power on goal difference and two points adrift of leader Perth Glory.

In Auckland yesterday, bottom placed Football Kingz managed its first win of the season when it upset high-flying Marconi 3-1.

The goal-shy Kingz produced its best performance of the season with goals to John Tambouras, Norwegian import Aleksandr Midtsian and Tallan Martin to dominate Marconi.

In last night's other match, Brendan Santalab's early goal gave Sydney United a 1-0 win over Northern Spirit, stopping the Spirit from scoring a fourth straight victory.

In Friday night's match, Newcastle's slump continued with a 1-0 home loss to Sydney Olympic.

Newcastle skipper Robbie Middleby was sent off late in the match to add insult to injury for his side, which has managed only one draw from its past five games.
