As part of a sponsorship deal, the famous Manchester cricket ground will be known as Emirates Old Trafford. the deal will last for ten years, and Lancashire will wear an emirates patch as part of their T20 kit.

Sadly, money continues to rule sport.

At least it's still Old Trafford.
Yeah, its better than Bellerive becoming Boot Park; or many of the AFL's grounds, where the actual name has been completely obliterated on the corporate altar.

The names "Lords" and "MCG" are probably worth more to their respective managements than any sponsor would be. The names are icons in themselves.

Interesting- we have the bit here in the US with college football games have sponsors (The Nokia Sugar Bowl, the Chik fil'A Bowl etc. The equivalent in the bowl games to Lords is the Rose Bowl, held each year in Pasadena, CA. They held out the longest, but have now gone the sponsorship route- but their name comes first- it is "The rose Bowl prsented by Vizio." Might be a compromise the folks at lords might make- i mean, they did put up lights.

I hope it doesn't happen, though. The poster about the other English grounds is right , though- the counties will go that way, and many already have- the Kia Oval, Swalec Stadium, the Emirate Riverside- what's Hampshire's ground now? Used to eb the Rose Bowl....

I reckon WA were the first state to jump to officially naming themselves after their sponsors e.g. Retravision Warriors. I'd say Adelaide Oval would be the next one at risk though with the AFL going there.

Although now we are the only state without a sponsor name.

They reckon that the new Perth Stadium won't have a sponsor's name but it will never happen.
I would think without a Sponsership it doesn't get made...

It depends on how tough Emirates wants to be on enforcing it, really. the fact of the matter is that its still Old trafford, and the way the name is set up is to keep the tradition, Allowing people to be lazy and still call it Old trafford.
