Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

So the club tells you to assess your options and you forcefully want him to stay?

Generally if someone tells me im not wanted or to look around i do just that its not that deep

i dont want you to think im stalking you, but...

the problem is that unless someone else is going to take the four year contract at the rate of pay he either stays or we subsidise him to play elsewhere.

If we have decided to move him on for salary cap reasons subsidising is an issue. If we have decided to offer him to the workd at large there may be clubs who will take him at lower rates knowing that we have said hes surplus.

Its a pretty difficult environment

Or you think **** you I will force you to pick me by playing well, Sydney going to dump him in the VFL forever if he performs?

Its possible his returns in the VFL were average not damaging on the scoreboard and mid to low 20's in disposals
VFL was just a write off last year. There was no connection amongst the players and little method or structure. I think it was difficult for any player to shine in that environment.

From Florent's point of view, he has a lot to weigh up. It's been made clear that Cox does not rate him but there does seem to be many reasons for him to stay in Sydney. If those reasons are strong enough, I think he should opt to stay and fight for his spot. He can do this with a strong preseason and possibly through the VFL, which hopefully will be better run in 2026.

I mean he is well within his rights to fight for a spot and back himself in next year and if he was in our bests they will soon pick him

If he stays, it could be a Jude Bolton moment which flicks a light switch in his career.

He needs to pull his finger out. It was a shocking 2025.

Just on this - one of the things ive notice about him is that he has noticeably bulked up in recent seasons and looks more like a 1970s/80s player - like a darren millane body shape. When he first entered the league it was his elusiveness which got him the game because he was so quick on his feet. I wonder whether they didnt make a mistake with him turning him into a heavier set defender
100% agree

Solid source he put on 5kg of muscle during the last off season. I agree I personally think it stuffed with his strengths.

I don't have favourite players or get particularly attached to individuals but I think it's worthwhile to remember Ollie's background.

I posted this on the Carlton BF board in response to a suggestion that Ollie had been reluctant to relocate to Sydney when drafted;

To be fair to Ollie he never kicked up a fuss about relocating.

He lost his dad, at the age of 45, in August of his draft year, after a 3 year battle with bowel cancer.
The family unit then became, he, a younger sibling and Ollie's mum.
The Swans met with Ollie and his mum and made it clear they wouldn't draft Ollie without his mum's approval.

To their credit never once was the homesickness card played, even though the circumstances would have been extremely difficult.
Ollie is now an ambassador for the Jodie Lee (Bowel cancer) Foundation.

So by all means debate Florent's ability, but if he were to join Carlton you would be getting a very solid citizen, from a bloody good family.. :thumbsu:

I also made a post in our T&D thread about us needing to be careful about forcing players out so that it doesn't have an adverse effect on the group as a whole;

From a football/contractual prospective (and maybe some would argue that's all that should matter) it may make sense to move Ollie on, but from a cultural viewpoint he may actually be the worst player to push out.

I agree with you that culture is of the utmost importance, but you've got to have more faith in our culture if you're suggesting that losing one or two men could shatter the very foundations upon which it stands.

I understand that losing valuable friends would be hard for the players to digest, but you can address that upon their return to the club by being open and forthright. If it doesn't already occur at the club, then the players, coaching staff, and list management team should have an open forum if the players are incensed by the trade moves this year.

There should be a bit of agitation from the player group during this trade period because the boys are so comfortable with one another. Change should always breed discomfort; it's just a matter of how we nurture and support the players during this evolution that counts.

A very thoughtful post HB. I don't know the right answer but "pushing a player out" leaves me quite uncomfortable even though I have had to do that very thing in my work life.
I had no problem with dropping Ollie (and Jake) but was left wondering how well it was done and what follow up was carried out.
The objective should always be to get the best out of the individual and the group.
Over the years the Swans have been pretty good at treating players respectfully but this doesn't feel right to me.

We have to improve and on last year he won't do that

I get that bedford and I'm not against finding a new home for Ollie (or anyone else) or delisting people or whatever to achieve it BUT everyone deserves to be treated with respect. Not bullied. That's my concern here.
Who is bullying , do you have evidence of that

How many games now and don't get me wrong ive always loved Ollie , but i believe to win a flag we need to be more ruthless
Paul Roos has been critical of us in that we needed to shake up the list, especially after 2024 GF. Might be a bit traumatic for a group that has been together for a long time but is probably necessary.
