Why do you think that Union is more popular than League in Victoria?

They got 26k for Australia v Italy last year.

NSW v QLD has already sold 25k+, plus State of Origin outrated the Bledisloe Cup last year.

I have many, many mates that are fanatical AR fans who have gained an interest in Union because of the national profile of the Wallabies. They all, without exception, seem to have an indifference to RL... it's not that they dislike it - more that it doesn't interest them to the point of not wanting to attend games or read/watch things about them in the media. If pushed for a reason, many will cite the stop-start flow of RL vs AR or RU, comparing it with the flow of play in American football.

The only Kangaroos that Melburnians know wear blue and white guernseys, and so the Wallabies become the focus of international sporting interest during the winter months. That's just the attitude down here.

As for event-specific support in Melbourne to compare RL and RU, I'll just put forward a theory. Melbourne is spoiled for high-quality sporting events on its annual calender, and thus patrons expect the best. Australia vs Italy RU is hardly top-tier, whereas NSW vs QLD RL is about as top-tier as that sport gets. Play the SOO midweek when families have little entertainment choice, and it will rate in Melbourne, especially compared with a Bledisloe Cup match on a weekend evening.

Do your friends recognise the difference between RL and RU?

Do Victorian's recognize that NSW v QLD is top tier? Who are the Victorian's supposed to support?

Would a top tier (non World Cup) in RU, South Africa v NZ attract a sellout at TD?

Saturday isn't the best day, but live at 7:30pm is a similar, if not better timeslot than Wednesday at 9:30pm.
