South Africa's highest score in Test cricket was 6-624 against Australia in 1970, however they have just passed that in the current Test match v. England.

Finally a topic that we can start talking about that test.

The 2nd test between England and South Africa. I was about to post a topic about it. Anyway lets use this topic to post about the match. The score at Lunch on Day 3 is:

England 173
South Africa 673/6 (173.0 ov)

South Africa have a 500 run lead and really should declare now. Smith got 259. His 2nd double century in a row and I think only Don Bradman has don that. Anyway England will be bowled out and SA will win by over innings.

South Africa declared a little after Tea.

They declared at 6/682! Great batting again there by South Africa.

Here is the overall score and the lead for SA:

England 173 & 17/0 (4.0 ov)
South Africa 682/6d

Vaughan 9*
Trescothic 8*

England trail by 492 runs with 10 wickets remaining

England now are 7/343

Still trailing by 166 runs. Looks like they will be bowled out today and South Africa will win by an innings.

Flintoff batting well on 84 off 96.

Seventh time it has happened, 3 times by Bradman, 2nd time in the last 66 years, 2nd time a player has scored 250+ in consecutive tests, 1st time a player has scored 255+ in consecutive tests (well he deserves some record of his own) :D

Also has the highest aggregate of runs across 2 tests

Another 379 in 3 tests to bring up 1000 runs in the series.

England has just levelled the series at 1-1 after 3 tests.
I'd suggest that they take urine samples from both teams after those 2nd Innings batting performances....

The pitch was f***ed, balls were keeping regularly.

Watched us win this morning & McKenzie & Pollock were both bowled by shooters.

Yeah, I know. I was actually taking a bit of licence here but it has certainly livened up the anticipation for the 4th & 5th tests...

A series decided in the 4th & 5th Tests, eh?

Not a concept I'm terribly familiar with following Australia over the last decade or so.

Well this can be taken two ways 1/Obviously when you play a 5 Test series it's over by the 3rd Test but 2/ also the fact that you don't play too many 5 Testers these days.

I had an argument with someone on here not long ago saying that I preferred 5 Test series & the dude just satrted having a go at me for making excuses for England:confused: .

Dunno what he was on about but my arguement for 5 Test series is perfect here, if it was a 3 Test series it would be ending now & it would be very unfullfilling, for sure it may still end up as a drawn series but then you could say well they were 2 pretty evenly matched teams.

I mean if I was SA & came out of this series now at 1-1 I'd feel a bit cheated.

So anyway what's your feelings on a 5 match series?I'm sure you'll happily disagree with me on this.;)

Yes 1/ is what I was thinking, but 2/ is relevant also.

I don't have any strong feelings on this. But if it's two evenly matched teams - like England and South Africa seem to be - then a five test series is probably best.

Problem is most of the 5-Test series I've seen of late haven't been that.

But the first Test series I really got into was Australia/Windies in 1992-93. That was a five test series and a great contest.

The first test in brisbane was a bit rain marred, hail marred even, but Australia were pressing for victory on the last day but the Windies held out at 8 or 9 wickets down. We were a bit robbed there.

The second test we won on a turning pitch in melbourne. Warne got a recall and took seven wickets in one innings - the second? - and that was really the making of him.

The third test was in Sydney on an absolute road. We declared at 500+ and the windies responded with 600+ (lara 277).

The fourth test in Adelaide we had a small run chase but fell short by a one measly run - despite a decent lower order partnership by May and McDermott. In fact we were robbed there too - it hit McDermott's helmet you clown Darrell Hair!

The fifth and deciding test was on a paceman's paradice in Perth. Consequently Ambrose and Bishop destroyed us.

All the other five or six Test series involving Australia since then have been relatively disappointing.

Come to think of it, if 1992-93 was a 3 Test series we would've won! Yeah, I definately favour 3 Test series. :)

The only three Test series recently where I've been really disappointed was probably the recent Australia-NZ series.

The first two Tests Australia took control in the first innings but were stifled by rain. We almost lost the first test trying to contrive a last day result! The third Test was a bonafide draw, despite some exciting last day batting from Gilchrist, the target was just a bit out of reach. Finishing nil all, that series really could have done with an extra test or two.

Oh and maybe the last series in India where we destroyed them in the first test but lost the second despite enforcing a follow on and lost the third narrowly. I think Australia were unfortunate to lose that series.

But a lot of the three test series involving Australia of late have finished three nil and I've been glad to see their finish. :D

Actually that's the series I mentioned before that deserved 5 Tests, it would have been great plus it would have allowed Australia a chance to bounce back which is the least they deserved, but I suppose they paid the price for Steve Waugh's all out attacking policy, as I'm sure Richie Benaud would have told him the only way they could have lost that 2nd Test was by enforcing the follow on.

Silly boy.:D

As for the whole idea of 5 Test series I can see from your point of view why it's probably not a good idea you'll just end up with one or two dead Tests at the end of every series but for England when we're playing either SA or Windies(they're pretty much the only other countries we now play 5 against) it can be pretty good.

I'm glad we make the effort really it woudl be easy to just go with two 3 Test series every summer bar an ashes year.
