Of the five teams that have just finished the winter competition season (*), four have made it into finals.

AFL - qualified fourth and will play a qualifying final
VFL - missed out on finals
VFLW - Minor premiers and just won their first qualifying final today
SNL (Netball) - against the odds just snuck into the finals, finishing 4th on an 8 team ladder, play an EF this weekend
VWFL (Wheelchair) - finished 2nd on 5 team ladder and play off in the grand final tomorrow

There have been a few mentions from club folks about internally to Collingwood we have a “one club” mentality, implying an integrated culture and organisation.

It’s not every fan’s cup of tea, and the club seem to recognise that by separating out the websites and social media accounts. When the AFLW launched there was a lot of opposition amongst fans - our AFL men’s weren’t doing so well at the time and some folks felt that we should be focusing on that./b

What do you think now about Collingwood fielding multiple teams? Has your opinion changed over the journey?

* Collingwood field 7 teams, the 5 above plus AFLW who play a summer comp (wooden spooners this year), plus ANL (Netball 2nds) who finished 3rd on an 8 team ladder in the regular season, and finished 3rd in finals.

Just football for me......boys & girls.

Netball ... some of those girls are international athletes who compete on the global stage and IMO it can only be a good thing to have athletes of that professional standard around the joint.

I have been to one of our netball games - the EF against Giants a few years ago and it was one the biggest sporting atmospheres I’ve been to (which is saying something). I’d recommend to anybody who is going through a sporting withdrawal this weekend to get along to tomorrow’s match v Vixens. Take earplugs - you have been warned.

Women’s footy - I’m a bit churlish about that one because I was suggesting as far back as 2011 that we get involved in women’s football (thread here ) so I’m chuffed to see it working out.

Wheelchair - I reckon diversity is a good thing, so to be in this comp is great. I do wonder if we would have been better off fielding a wheelchair rugby team instead because that’s an international sport with greater scope for professionalism? No reason we couldn’t have both I suppose.

In general ... one of the big knocks on this idea of diversifying into other sports was our history of the ill fated Collingwood Warriors Soccer Team ... It’s good that we have now put all that behind us.

That was long time ago and Lots has Changed

there's a lot of gov't funding attracted with being involved in women's sport and disabled sport...... other than that, I dont see how you could have a problem with it. The AFL team takes care of itself. It's not as if Buckley is doing planning sessions for the wheelchair team.

I think its diversity is great. It helps to create an positive atmosphere within the club .
To have a state of the art sporting complex with only one team using it, would be madness. I would rather have a Collingwood associated team using it then some vague agreement with a club or code that means nothing to me.
I don't think the club would have lost supporters over this, probably the opposite.

As a business venture, it's great the club is broadening the reach of our brand across multiple sports (read somewhere Eddie was even interested in making the Melbourne Stars BBL team affiliated with Collingwood?).

Though I think it does go without saying from a resource allocations perspective that the football operations of our club should remain the #1 priority and preserved if all else fails (AFL/VFL, AFLW/VFLW).

99% of fans probably don't even know about 3 of those 5 teams.

I’d imagine 99% of female Collingwood supporters under 18 years old would be well aware of our netball teams, and add many of the parents of those girls to that. Some would be following the fortunes of our netball team closer than our footy teams.

I wouldn’t be surprised if our netball attendances are higher than our VFL (male) attendances.

I’d imagine that the VFLW would be much less so, although the rapid expansion of girls teams at the grass roots level would imply that there’d be some awareness - although again it would probably be largely in that young female bracket.

I’d say for many Collingwood supporters it’d be like knowing of teams like Brisbane Broncos or New York Yankees or Chicago Bulls or Manchester United ... they’d be well aware of their presence but that’d be the end of their knowledge or interest.

I don’t know anything about the wheelchair comp but could imagine that’d be quite niche.

I visit my local baker to buy bread, but I don't object to them selling scones or croissants as long as the core product remains awesome. :)

It’ll be interesting to see how the fortunes of the teams go up and down relative to each other.

Despite being independent teams having independent coaching groups, I could imagine they will generally perform at a consistent high / low level to each other ...

... as they are now ...

... and as the baker does.

I agree with you on this. Better to have a collingwood team than a melbourne storm or some round ball entity.

Trying to make an argument against it, I think there can be a problem if we dont do it well. I think the women's team and the netball seemed to be done initially on buying the best team. I dont know much about netball, but we had all these all-australian netballers and they didnt seem to gel. The initial squad with the AFLW also seemed to target mature players who knew the game but had no upside. It looked to me like approaches someone might take if they had a wad of money and just wanted to make a few headlines.

I just had a look at the netball ladder - i take no interest - and we are 4th out of 8. They're in the finals. Thats not bad. The AFLW seems to have finally got a longer term vision and framework together, but what would I know.

The collingwood teams need to reflect a committed approach and some professionalism or they do nothing to enhance the club overall - in fact, I think there's an argument that they undermine it to some extent.

Would it be fair to say that the combined budget of all the other teams would be a fraction of the AFL team's salary cap? :) The other teams would benefit from the IP that our core business (AFL) has more than the other way around IMO; initially anyway.
