Who in recent memory (will be different for different ages) has been a one game wonder, whether they are a 100 game player who only played one great game or a player who played 4 games and one great one it doesnt matter.

Andrew Walker 26 possesions in his first game, dud ever since
Ted Hopkins 4 goals in 1970 GF as 19th man

Shane Tongerie. Kicked 3 goals and looked a gun on debut for Adelaide against Brisbane. Only played 2 more games and spent a couple of years in SANFL reserves.

Glenn Freeborn of sorts. Turned the 1996 Grand Final with 3 goals in 5 minutes and altho he was a pretty solid player, he didnt really play much of a match winning role like that again at either Kangaroos or Collingwood. Pretty good player tho...maybe im a tad harsh.

Andrew Tranquilli booted something like 6 goals against WCE in 1994.

Jason Wild was a couragous, much maligned player of the Tony Shaw coaching stint. Booted three goals in a quarter and a bit, round 9, 1997 vs Sydney in a drubbing.

Dale Baynes (not really). Played one game (round 11ish vs Geelong, 2000) across halfback and looked the part. Mysteriously was dropped and never played again.

Ben Kinnear wracked up 3 Brownlow Votes in round 17 of 2001 against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG, playing as a part time ruckman.

Rupert Betheras (one of my all-time favourites) had a handful of consistant seasons (99-00) before slipping back a tad in '01. 2002 saw a big comeback from 'The Rupe', who turned the round eight clash with Brisbane on its head with three goals in quick succession - the master shocktrooper had done it again.

There are countless others who had their day out:

Shannon Gibson (Haw/Coll - 94-98) booted five down at the Cattery in 1997.
Dion Scott played a blinder one Friday night at the MCG against the Dons, 1998.
Ryan O'Connor won the Jesoulencou (sp) Medal in 1995

These threads are often great memory revivors.

BTW, a little harsh on Freeza, Macca, he did play many dependable matches for the Pies from 99-03.

Brent Grgic, booted four goals against Collingwood in about 1997 or 98 from centre half-forward.

Looked like the next Garry Lyon.

Subsequent events proved it was a con.

I've got highlights (not so sure they could be dubbed that as a CFC supporter ;)) of that match (round 8, 1998). Grgic was on fire that afternoon, close to BOG. If he was able to harness his talent, I have no doubt he would have ended up a star.

Aaron Edwards from West Coast... he kicked 5 goals against Richmond. Then the following games he didnt do much

I think he is delisted now

Good pick-up, I was at that match - something like six marks stuck in his mitts in the first term alone. Didn't boot five goals, though. Very unlucky to be delisted.

Daniel Metropolis kicked 6 goals with his first 6 kicks in league footy against us one year.
Went on to be a very ordinary player, although to his credit , Freo still managed to pay him about half a million a year when he went there.

Jay Shultz against Brisbane. However give him time I think he will be ok.

That's not really true but I can see your point. Round 22 this year he carved up Playfair (think it was him, some Cats player) at CHB.

The week before against the Hawks after coming off the ground hurt did some work on the forward line that set up the Richmond win.

Anyone who thinks Richomnd has no real up and coming KPP's remember the name Shultz.

agreed but he didnt kick 5 goals...IIRC he kicked 2

I hope the kid gets picked up though, he has a great pair of hands...id go as far as saying in terms of marking, he would be one of the best in the league.

heath shepherd from collingwood in the mid eighties i think kicked 5 on debut.
sean charles from the dees who ended up at carlton was another who had a great first up effort but never went on with it.

Dean Greig for the saints had about 40 possesions in his first or secong game for St. kilda against Carlton at Waverley, and never reached those heights again. He was a solid bugger who has since lost a leg due to a football injury.

.... became the highest paid regular WAFL player. When he wasn't in the WAFL, he was injured, earning a Kings Ransom on the sidelines.

Freo eventually tried to co-erce him into retiring. He didn'y give a rats, would you retire if you had a contract like that?
