I saw the Capper one via YouTube, I'm finding for me at least that Mike (or the editors) are spending a fair bit of these shows focussing on the things that are already well-known, the controversies or the events that have already been well-publicised. I understand that the reason most of these guys are getting interviewed is often because of these events but it'd be nice to get a bit more of a football perspective from some of them.

Perhaps 30 mins is too short to cover both the controversies and the footy stuff adequately.

I believe what has been said about Brisbane player's snubbing him, jealous about what he was being paid. In those day's, I can absolutely imagine that happening. However in my opinion Fevola was a far better all around full forward than Capper, all except for the specky mark value. If you put Fevola in that Sydney side, back in that era, more space for a forward and had guy's like Williams, Healy, Murphy and Mitchell feeding him the ball! He's kicking well over 100 goal's and not needing final's to reach the mark.
That's pure conjecture.
The Swans played at the SCG back then that had very little room to move. Full forwards didn't get goals from being on a long lead, Fevola was more your lead and mark man. he used to kick goals from 25-55 m out generally. He was able to utilise his long accurate kicking, the SCG at that time would not have suited him. Swans used to kick it in long and high and Capper came over the top to mark or was strong enough to hold off the full-back and mark. He was deceptively good off the ground and was very fast. His downside was the depth of his kicking, as he didn't move much further than 30 metres from goal this was rarely an issue.
Don't believe for one moment was given lace out delivery at the SCG, it was a completely different game from playing at the bigger Victorian grounds.

Of course not, Lockett is by far the best full forward I ever saw play the game and Pratt was obviously a legend also. However I mean an all-time Sydney team, like say from 1980 onward's when the Club relocated. Player's who represented Sydney not Sth. Melbourne. Just name him alongside Lockett, in a pocket or somewhere, at least on the bench.
He deserves the recognition even just for the spotlight he put on the team during his time there.

Lockett was a great full-forward no doubt, you might be overlooking two that played at the same time that were as good in Dunstall and Ablett snr.
For me Dunstall was the perfect full forward, i would have taken him every day of the week over Lockett and that is not downgrade Lockett at all. In my opinion Dunstall was far more team-centric, he would do the 1% things that Plugger wouldn't do. He was disciplined and an excellent kick.
At his best Plugger edges him but for pure consistent performance week in week out Dunstall was the man.
Ablett on the other hand could have been the best of the lot. He started as a wingman/flanker and didn't move to a true full forward until he was well into his career. The amount of goals he could have kicked could have been staggering. Early in his career he was as spectacular as any player that ever played the game.
If you want to see how good he was before being a full forward look at the State Of Origin game where he kicks a heap from the wing. He was selected in the Victorian side after about only 10 games, I think he kicked 7 and took an absolute screamer in that game. He was the complete package.

Dude you are preaching to the choir about Ablett and Dunstall, I am of that vintage where I watched those matches you are talking about live. You are not telling me anything I don't know. Dunstall was great and it's the eternal question almost, who was better Lockett or Dunstall. You say Dunstall, as many do, I say Lockett, as I think just a tad more say. Lockett never played in the great Hawthorn sides, Lockett was a more accurate kick for goal than Dunstall. Lockett could do thing's, Dunstall could only dream of doing. Then you mention Gary Ablett Sr., well let me say this, he is as I've said for year's, the best player I ever saw play the game. I agree with you, if Ablett had played full forward earlier in his career, he would be rated the best full forward to ever play the game. I don't doubt that for a second! Personally, I just really liked Lockett, played in some crap team's and still kicked bag's of goals, he was mean and if you're life depended on it, he was the man you would want kicking for goal!
As far as Capper v Fevola is concerned, sorry but Capper is not Fev's class, plain and simple in my opinion. I'm not the only one who thinks so, I put a poll up, in the Poll's Board, check it out.
I don't agree with you but you know you're stuff and I definitely respect your opinion, you make some some good points.

Bought the Open Mike book. Great read.
I've seen pretty much all the shows, is there much more dialog in the book that hasn't already been on the shows? I was thinking of buying it myself but might be pointless if I've already heard it.

Was Capper ever the best player or even top 10 in the comp? Obviously you have to be talented to kick the amount of goals he did but I always hear about his personality and not the calibre of footballer he was.
For all his flair and bravado, he could play. Not best in the comp though, and probably not even top 10.

There's a lot of shows I haven't seen so I'm not sure about the interviews, before every chapter he does about a page long bio of each person though.

That was a fantastic episode, John Kennedy Snr is a true legend, fantastic guy too

Talk about one extreme to the other- Warwick Capper one week, John Kennedy Snr. the next!

Took me a while to get into Open Mike, but I really enjoy it now.

Fantabulous. One of my childhood favourites.

Wonder how much he charges for corporate functions? Hopefully we'll find out if Mike's on his game. :thumbsu:

:p he also liked to let them know how keen he was to interview them, wether it be ohhh i wasnt sure , that wasnt bad, or i couldnt wait

Always loved salmon though such a champ

Kennedy was great! So glad he is part of the North family, one of the top shelf quality blokes in footy.
I still remember his first game as North coach against Hawthorn, it was a draw, his old team didn't win and his new team didn't win.

Take away all the side show that came with Capper & had he stayed with the Swans & Capper would have been recognised as a pretty special forward to have played the game.

I wouldn't go that far. He was good for a couple of years, but he got worked out. Once that happened his confidence disappeared and he was finished.

Plus he's a complete w***er.

Just watched Mike's interview with Slamming Sam. I had no problem with Mike's line of questioning - Probably because I started watching footy in the 70's and have a fair knowledge of Sam's footy career the line of questioning made perfect sense.

And I loved Sam's nude spread in The Truth - Imagine the outcry it would cause today.

Consider this - Capper played just 124 VFL/AFL games, and the final four years of his career are thought of in hindsight as a "down period", yet he kicked more goals in his time in the league (388) than Lance Franklin did in his first 128 games (384).
