There are still plenty of excellent candidates out there if Mike is prepared to look beyond the Victorian border for a few minutes

Russell Ebert
Rick Davies (hilarious in interview situations)
Barrie Robran (all SANFL legends)
Austin Robertson (football feats huge in WA, then add in his involvement in World Series Cricket plus management of blokes like Shane Warne)

Even Ross Oakley would be a very interesting one if he is prepared to do it, as is Wayne Jackson (both might be limited by what they can say on some things, I suppose)

He's never displayed any notable knowledge of players who spent the majority (or all) their career in the SANFL/WAFL so interviewing him would be a waste of time.

Actually, I could easily envisage a Barrie Robran interview. Half of it would be spent on the Matthews incident and whether he holds any grudges; the other half would be on how much money VFL clubs offered him to come to Victoria (and Mike's mouth open in shock at Barrie turning down such offers).

It's also a national show that has to retain some commercial appeal. If you're South Australian and born before 1965, then Barrie Robran or Russell Ebert would be fascinating. Sadly, most people who watch aren't footy tragics like ourselves - so the pool of potential talent is limited.

I'd much rather see interviews with the likes of Austin Robertson or 'Jumbo' Davies, but there's greater community interest in anodyne interviews with recent 200-game AFL retirees.

I dispute this. People who get the Fox sport package do so because they are footy tragics.

They're not historical footy tragics - certainly not enough to care about what happened in the SANFL and WAFL. It's notable even in the last two years how much Mike Sheahan has veered away (or been told to veer away) from interviewing even old VFL notables.

they have a difficult relationship?

Mike and Robbo are very close, and Hutchy and Robbo hate each other (even though Hutchy said he doesn't have an issue with Robbo).
So I think Mike isn't a huge fan of Hutchy because of the issues with Robbo.

Why he hasn't interviewed the games record holder yet is beyond me. Or number 2 on that list (7 flags FFS!)

The Conversations show on ABC Radio featured Austin Robertson and it was brilliant. Stories about growing up in Perth, his footy days, Kerry Packer and young Malcolm Turnball, and the cricket. It was a great one hour.

Clever man Austin Robertson, he brought out a book on World Series Cricket and titled it "Cricket Outlaws". What was clever about it was he got all the principle players in World Series Cricket to write the book for him :)

He didn't explain why John Cornell (Strop) won't talk to him any more when they were once great mates. It probably happened when he was living with Strop and Delvene Delaney in Sydney, Robertson probably tried to hit on his missus :)

Everyone who has tried to interview Barrie Robran have encountered the same problem. He refuses to speak about himself. A mate of mine wrote a great book on Robran, but Barrie didn't want anything to do with it. My mate was about to shelve the project when the rest of the Robran family pleaded with him to finish the book.

Fascinating character Barrie, even if he doesn't think so. Great footballer (one of the best I've seen anywhere), Sheffield Shield cricketer, and if he wanted to concentrate on basketball could have played for Australia. I played against him several times and had all the skills in the book ... and then some. I genuinely feel sorry for those who never saw him play.
