Soft spot for Brisbane
Here is how I would line up the Crows squad for the first game of the Wizard Cup (echoing other comments about playing the kids and fringe players who we are hoping will emerge, and where our improvement can come from).

FF: Perrie, Rutten, Schuback
CHF: Hentschel, S Stevens, Ladhams
C: Doughty, Johncock, Reilly
HB: Bock, McGregor, Massie
FB: Torney, Parker, Begley

1st R: Hudson, Shirley, Bode
RES: Kreuger, Mattner, Gallagher, Stenglein, Skipworth, Jericho.

Thoughts?

I don't mind it, but I'd probably swap Begley and Bock around so Begley can link up in midfield and all Bock has to do is worry about defending. Apart from that, IMO your forward line is far too big. Stevens, Perrie, Hentschel and Rutten... it'd be like a traffic jam.

Reilly or Bode on a flank and one or two of those talls to the bench would balance it up a bit more.

Burns Hentschel Rutten

Ladhams Perrie Schuback

Reilly Stenglein Mattner

Bock McGregor Massie

Edwards Parker Torney

Ir Biglands Bode Skipworth

Int Shirley Doughty S Stevens Begley Hudson Johncock

A bit more experience in with Edwards and Burns who needs to show something early I reckon.

B:.... Jason Torney..... Aidan Parker..... Nathan Bock
HB:... James Begley..... Ken McGregor..... Kris Massie
C:.... Brent Reilly..... Mark Ricciuto.... Tyson Stenglein
HF:... Tyson Edwards.... Ian Perrie....... Jacob Schuback
F:.... Trent Hentschel.. Ben Rutten....... Ronnie Burns
1R:... Rhett Biglands... Graham Johncock.. Chris Ladhams

IC: Ben Hudson, Michael Doughty, Robert Shirley, Fergus Watts, Scott Stevens, Matthew Bode

Torney, McGregor, Ricciuto, Stenglein, Edwards, Perrie and Burns provide experience on every line so the youngsters aren't alone.

Hudson and Biglands share the ruck duties, it was a toss-up whether to bring in Krueger as a third ruckman but I went for an extra midfield/utility type such as Doughty instead.

Watts and Scott Stevens to come off the bench to get a taste of what it's like to play for the Adelaide Football Club and should play as they're our number one draft pick and only piece of business at trade week, respectively.

Bode to provide some experience off the bench and Shirley to share duties with Johncock and Ladhams in midfield because I don't rate Skipworth. Robert has proven he knows how to grab a second chance with both hands, Hayden has not.

Thoughts?

This is the team I would be playing in the first 2 pre-season games to see who is up to it and who is not. I have kept Stenglein, Ladhams, Perrie, Stiffy, McGregor, Begley, Torney and Biglands as the "experienced players" to give a hand to the youngsters.

Just analyzing our list and these are the players that will be 23 and under at the start of next year

Fergus Watts (18)
Luke Jericho (19)
Josh Krueger (20)
Brent Reilly (20)
Jacob Schuback (20)
Natahn Bock (20)
Aidan Parker (20)
Ben Rutten (20)
Graham Johncock (21)
Trent Hentschel (21)
Martin Mattner (21)
Hayden Skipworth (21)
Scott Stevens (21)
Ken McGregor (22)
Robert Shirley (23)
Tyson Stenglein (23)
James Begley (23)
Chris Ladhams (23)
Kris Massie (23)

Not a hell of a lot of star material there but a good mix of solid players/prospects. Definetly weak in the midfield and ruck area. Its interesting to note that regulars such as Massie, Ladhams, McGregor, Stenglein and Johncock are 23 or under at the start of 2004 (on January 1st 2004)

Could do with a bit more star quality.

I am torn by the wizard cup..........do we go out to win it again? or do we try the youngsters? I would like to see some of the youngsters get a go such as Watts, S Stevens & Hudson.

It will be interesting for sure!

I think the teams posted by Jars, dyertribe and Stiffy are on the right track, whatever the final combinations be.

Put a little bit of stiffening in the side (sorry Stiffy :D ) with 7 to 8 experienced players, and play the young lads for the first two games before playing our best side in the last 2 pre-season games.

The result means bugger-all. I'd rather see who's up to it and who isn't.

I agree but what are the chances of Ayres thinking along the same lines??????

I bet we go out all guns blazing to make sure we are off to a good start come round 1 as we have a pretty tough draw in the 1st half of the season.

I think we should play the kids in first 2 games and play our full strength team in the last 2 games to make sure we have gelled enough for round 1. Somehow I doubt AFC will have the same approach.

B: Bock, Parker, Massie
HB: Mattner, S Stevens, Begley
C: Reilly, Stenglein, Doughty
HF: Johncock, Perrie, Ladhams
F: Hentschel, Rutten, Schuback
R: Biglands, Shirley, Bode

I: Hudson, Gallagher, Skipworth, Welsh, Ricciuto, Goodwin

If last couple of years are anything to go by then there is no chance of him playing in the Wizard Cup.

Wouldn't it be great for a change to have Welsh, Burton and Stevens for a whole year.
Now Welsh is apparantly over his OP, he should get some match conditioning pre-season.

I'm not worried about Burton, as I wouldn't say he is injury-prone - but you would hope Welshy & M Stevens can play most of the season, as it will make heck of a difference to our forward line!

Thats the main reason we got him. We wanted a KPP with a bit of versatility and Stevens fits the bill. Still not convinced about him. I would have rather kept the picks.
Stiffy, let's judge this trade a few years down the track. Personally I was happy to trade for S Stevens, but only time will tell. It's unfair to criticise the trade before the season has even started!!

I was against trading our 2nd round pick unless we improved the selection. Which we didn't do. Maybe Scott Stevens might prove out to be avery good trade (ala Caven or dare I say it Mark Stevens)

Time will tell.

B: Hart, S Stevens, Basett
HB: Smart, McGregor, Edwards
C: Reilly, Ricciuto, Stenglien
HF:Hentschel, Perrie, Burns
F: Schuback, Rutten, Bode

R: Biglands, McLeod, Johncock

I: Goodwin, Clarke, Hudson, Stevens, Welsh, Torney

For mine, the area that needs to be developed and settled in for Round 1 is the defence. We cant go into Round 1 with an unsettled back 6. We need to get these guys organised and providing lots of run and not get caught playing stop/start rubbish.

It will also be interesting to see if Scott Stevens can be the extra tall if defence we are lacking. I say leave him at FB or HB for the pre season to see if he is up to it.
