Haha.

This is the only problem with Opeth; not enough people have heard their music to be able to embrace it.

Ain't that the truth. Deep, complex, meaningful 10+ minute Death Metal/Jazz/acoustic folk songs go about 5000 miles over the heads of your average shallow minded music fan.....

Haven't heard much Opeth even though I've been trying to listen to a whole bunch of new stuff from that end of my musical taste spectrum.

Just listened to "The Grand Conjuration"

Impressive Prog metal.

Seemed to me like a cross between Meshuggah/ Dark Tranquility and some of the heavier DT.

Martin Lopez rips it up

Will definately check out more of them. :thumbsu:

Do it, you WON'T be disapointed.
Unfortunately Lopez has left the band. But I saw the new guy, Martin 'The Axe' Axenrot live with them earlier this year, and I reckon he's just as good.

Progressive metal, for the most part, has become unlistenable for me. But there were some fantastic bands in the genre; IMO Opeth is the second greatest prog metal band of all time, behind Dream Theater, and also one of the better and more influential bands metal has ever seen. Their song Black Rose Immortal is by far their greatest work :thumbsu:

Roddy, since you said you like jazz-influenced metal, are you familiar with Cynic? Theyre a tremendous band, I can almost guarantee that youll like em. Check out their album "Focus", its probably one of the most underrated metal albums of all time

You might also like Atheist and their album "Piece of Time", which is another classic. These are two great albums from two great Florida based bands that I really think you would enjoy

Yeah, have heard of Cynic, but haven't heard any of their stuff. I'll hafta add them to the list of 10,248 bands that I gotta check out. Thanks for the tip.

And yeah, I'm familiar with Atheist. An old mate had 2 of their albums, one of which was 'Piece of Time', both of which he played all the time. Remember digging them, for the sheer 'over the top-ness' of their playing, but I just thought the 'look what I can do' attitude overcame the actual SONGS. And I'm a very 'song-orientated' Metal fan!

But hey, neither of them come from Sweden, so how can they be any good??????

Bullcrap. Most people think metal is absolute tripe and it is.

Not really. Only morons like you think like that. If you head to any respectable music institution, youll see how wrong you are. At the Unversity of Berkely, arguably one of the best schools for music theory in the world, over 90 percent of the student AND faculty and PRIMARILY fans of extreme metal. So dont be a douche and do some research before you spout from your guzzle. I havent been here long, but Ive been here long enough to see that all your posts are the same trollish dribble over and over. Get some new lines, huh?

Ahahahahahah. The only Swedish bands I listen to nowadays are all black metal bands like Marduk, Dark Funeral, and Dissection :( Im also seeing Dark Funeral in January over here, that should be great

So every person who doesnt like the metal garbage are morons?

You're in denial.

No. But theres a difference between a genre not appealing to you, and belittling it at every chance you get. You dont have to like metal, but at least respect it, and if you cant do that either, then at least keep your mouth shut. The way you take shots at it (unjustified shots to boot, with no reason to back em whatsoever), is what led to my calling you a moron

Mate, just ignore it. It means NOTHING, and is born of sheer, pathetic ignorance. Pay it no mind.

Yeah I guess that means that Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera etc are respected artists whose work will survive down the centuries due to their popularity. They are the modern equivalents of Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin etc and the musical equivalents of Da Vinci, Dali, Rembrandt etc.

FWIW I like most genres of music but metal is my favourite (including Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Sabbath, Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, Electric Wizard etc). Music with balls.

Opeth are a great band who Ive seen live 3 times (at the Corner Hotel) but Ive just never really given their albums a good listen. I do own a couple though.

Top ten songs is way too difficult. Surfice to say that April Ethereal and When off MAYH are the perfect type of Opeth song, just amazing.

If you haven't already, get Morningrise. The production isn't very good, the vocals aren't as good as they are in later albums, but it's great stuff, with waaay more influence from progressive music than their recent stuff.

Yeah, am gunna check out Morningrise and Orchid as soon as I can. Hopefully will get some JB vouchers for Chrissie!!!

I know of a few friends listen to Opeth, I've been meaning to listen to why they think they're so good.. >_> Where should I start? Give me a few songs/albums that I should like to like all of their stuff.

Look absolutely no further than their last album, 'Ghost Reveries'. To me, it takes all the greatest elements from all their previous works and rolls it all into one astounding album! Almost the perfect progressive Metal album, and contains what I believe is their finest tune, the incredible 'The Grand Conjuration'. Perfect place to start. Then check out 'Blackwater Park'.
