(bump) Hey everyone, In the end decided to use accutanr and started about 4 or 5 days ago. I like to go out on weekends and get smashed, ive accepted I can't do this as often while I'm on this drug. Was wondering if any previous users can fill me in on their experiences on drinking while on the drug (Ive got one of my best mates 18th's this weekend) and any sciencos explain to me why the acne doesnt just come back after using the drug and why drinking is bad while on the drug.

Furthermore, did anyone take anything else while on the drug that assisted them with ridding ACNE.

Pro-Activ!

Hey, Katy Perry endorses it. It can't be that bad.

I had a dermatologist tell me once that the active ingredient in Pro Activ is the same as in most OTC pharmacy strength acne treatments (i.e. not Clearasil and the type) and that you were basically getting ripped off by buying the more expensive Pro Activ

The Pill can be a pretty good treatment for mild/moderate acne (for girls obviously)

Hey mate. i was on roaccutanefor six months starting half way through last year. I was worried about it as well in a big way. Didn't drink for the first month or so but had mad monday and got smashed. After that it didn't stop me at all and only had dry lips and dry skin.

I'd suggest just dont drink for the sake of drinking, but dont worry about it too much, however different people will react in different ways.

I'm also 100% sure in 9/10 cases simply having a healthy diet will remove almost all acne. I know it works for me, but again I'd rather have acne then sacrafice fast food.

I've never had acne, and have barely ever even had a sizeable pimple (probably as much due to genetics as always having being obsessive over my skin care and pretty much never touching fast food), but I can't think of anything worse to have (aside from life-threatening illnesses, obviosuly), especially seeing as it's mostly preventable. Some people have extreme cases that continue into early adulthood (eg. Matthew Kreuzer) that require medical treatment, but most young people don't have that, and are simply not proactive (pardon the pun) enough with their skin care.

Some people just can't help it this way (and thus have to the prescription drug option), but washing your face morning and night with Gamophen medicated soap or Dettol Sapoderm soap (just as cheap as regular soap, can be bought off the shelf most supermarkets, and good for using on the rest of your body too, if you get pimples/acne there), getting enough sleep (stress can cause breakouts), having a relatively heathy diet and drinking plenty of water (you don't have to go stupid with it, and it's not a cure-all, but most people don't drink nearly enough water day-to-day anyway) should improve things somewhat I'd think.

Was on roaccatine in my last few years at school and was definitely a great decision, especially doing it before turning 18.

Only side effects I got were dried lips and ingrown toenails:confused:
Also felt tired a lot but not sure if that was due to exams or the pill.

Oratane is an alternate pharma brand of Roaccutane. Usually if someone asks for the generic brand they give you that. I asked my derm if there was any real difference and she said there wasn't really - even the price difference is only about $2.

Roaccutane did give me clicky joints while I was on it. Within the first few weeks I had dry eyes, VERY sensitive skin, nose bleeds and chapped lips like most people get. You've also got to remember to drink a lot of water, otherwise you might get really seriously constipated. Believe me, you do NOT want this. Most of the super sensitivity goes away after a while and you get used to it.

Everyone reacts differently, and although many of my side effects went away about a week or two after I stopped taking it (its been about 5 months), I now have dryish skin. Need to use moisturiser regularly. It lightened my skin quite a bit (I've got an olive/tanned skin tone that tans easily so I tend to stay out of the sun anyway).

One thing to note, however, is that if you have a family history of high cholesterol, you need to tell your derm and manage it. My LDL concentration was creeping up higher, so dosage had to be tweaked.

Basically, everyone reacts differently. If you do decide to go ahead, read up on it carefully and get your dermatologist/doctor to explain everything to you clearly. I don't regret my decision one bit. No papules, pustules, cysts in over 4 months, clear skin, really happy.

Been on it for about 3 months now I think.

Lips chap up terribly but I use Carmex and Lucas Paw Paw Ointment to treat that, eyes occasionally dry up and my legs can go to lead if I run too much.

Pimples and redness going away.

Smooth sailing atm

was on the stuff a few years back. only issue i had was dry lips. It takes that much oil out of your skin it's impossible to stop.

I continued to boundary umpire football through it. No issues. I umpired cricket through it too. No major issues except the dry skin just peels off your face like sunburn after a 4 day game. Even though it wasn't sunburn! It was an interesting sight and then people try to give you tips on how to avoid skin peeling. But no issues that affected me in any way.

i guess everyone is different, if you are a relatively healthy person to begin with you're not going to have too many issues.

Roaccutane made my hair curly! Only lasted a few months just as I was starting Uni and finishing my second course of Roaccutane, but a mate had the same thing happen to him.

I used Roaccutane for about a year, had a year off it and then had to go back on it again for another year because the acne had returned.

I got the usual dry skin, lips, etc. but still continued to play sport and go to the gym. My body was probably more accepting to physical activity back then as opposed to now.

I have never been a drinker so can't give you advice in that area.

Hey everyone, been on the drug for two weeks now and skin is already looking clearer. Is this justg a co-incidence or is it actually working. Keep in mind my ACNE wasnt cystic just mild-moderate in severity. How long does it take for the acne to come back after taking roaccutane?

Wash your hair regularly, clean pillow cases regularly and most importantly get your diet right.

Yes, drugs will work but have side effects. 99% (not all) of cases can be rectified by the above (before you think you are one of those special people in the 1%, actually try these things).

I've been off it for about 5 months and I've had one pimple so far in the month right after I stopped it. That was hormonal though (something I really struggled with being a girl), and doesn't seem to be a problem now!

I went on Oratane around the start of year 12, which was a few years ago for me. Best decision I ever made. Although I only had mild pimples it was still constant. Would always have at least 1 or 2 pimples which kind of pissed me off.

I remember having a pretty bad breakout around 3-4 weeks into Oratane which I think is pretty common. Definitely the worst breakout I ever had. But after that it was smooth sailing. Only had dry lips as a side effect.

Been on it probably 3 months or so. I've avoided drinking but have my formal tomorrow night and plan on having a few with mates plus a bit of champagne. I won't take the pills tomorrow, but will maybe a glass of champagne and three or four shots of vodka be terrible for me?

the best stuff to use
Bought a pot today before realising that the one I thought was lost was in my brothers car. That's on top of the 4 tubes I already have! The pots are much better imo

I used it about 10 years ago. I noticed my acne got worse before it go better. But the acne did eventually clear so I suppose it was worth it.

I found it to be a very strong drug and that they weren’t kidding when they told you not to drink alcohol and avoid getting sunburnt. I unfortunately found this out the hard way!

I think if you want to improve your skin and get rid of acne then it is worth it, but remember it prescription medication and if they tell you not to drink alcohol then you should follow their advice.

Supposed to happen. An indication that the drug was doing its thang.

Geez. I'd probably rather stick with bad skin than suffer with some of the side effects mentioned here.

If you've suffered from acne for nearly all of your teenage years, into early adulthood like myself you'd say otherwise, trust me.

My acne nowadays is no where near as bad as what it was compared to my early years around the start of high school, but at 23 it's at the point now where I should be over getting any regular breakouts. The fact that i'm still suffering from it shits me up the wall, as it can have a massive effect on ones self-esteem and you don't want to feel like a insecure pussy when out on the weekends mingling with any potential... well, pussy. ;)

Previously i've tried all topical creams, and none had an effect. Funnily enough Proactiv was probably the closest thing that worked for me - albeit temporarily. My theory is if that if the acne stems from a hormonal imbalance/genetics, topical treatments aren't going to cure the source of the breakouts - only clear up the breakouts as they occur.

Went into my Dermo about a month ago, and he prescribed me a batch of some stuff called Bactrim, which was a lead in drug to Oratane. All went well, and am just over a week into my course of Oratane, which will run for around 6 months at this stage. Have only had dry lips so far, but had some weird shit happening like the other day when I realised one of my ear lobes was randomly peeling dry skin, and also the webbing between one of my fingers was peeling slightly. Was like WTF?

I tested out the alcohol theory last night, also, and it's true that it doesn't take much for you to get written off. Didn't go massively overboard, though, so luckily enough didn't feel sick like any of the others in here that have posted.

Also, it's true what they say about the possibility your acne may get slightly worse before it improves. Hopefully it's the beginning of the end of acne for good. :thumbsu:

I used Bactrim for a month, did shit all.

I drank a few weeks ago and despite having to ditch half my flask and not having taken any tablets that day, I was drunk enough off the 3 shots. Usually takes me 5+ to feel anything on the odd occasion I drink.
