Ottens to tell Tigers: 'I'm out'
By Jake Niall
September 24, 2004

Brad Ottens has indicated he wants to play for Geelong or Sydney

Richmond ruckman-forward Brad Ottens will tell the Tigers today of his wish to leave Punt Road and continue his 129-game career elsewhere.

Ottens, 24, who is out of contract and the subject of frenzied bidding from rival clubs, has indicated he wishes to play with either Geelong or Sydney next year.

He will tell the Tigers of his desire to be traded today when he speaks with Richmond football director Greg Miller.

Ottens, who has been in Bali, will leave Melbourne for Thailand within 24 hours of telling Richmond of his wish to find another club.

Sources last night said that contrary to speculation, Ottens' motivation for seeking a new club was not so much the prospect of a reduced salary - cash-strapped Richmond has offered him a significant reduction to his present contract - but his desire to rejuvenate his football career.

No suprises there he was always going to go, lets just hope we get something good for him.

Slightly disappointed but at the same time, if he isn't fully committed to rebuilding the club, it's better off for both. No use throwing bucketloads of money to a bloke who doesn't want to be there and would severely underperform for years to come (*cough* "Gaspar" *cough*).

We'll hardly even notice him not there with the output he has given us over the past 3 years.

Just means now Miller can step up the approach to Troy Simmonds - perfect replacement.

At least Gas has shown committment to Tigerland and to his career by taking a paycut and wanting to stay at the club,
I've got no time for Ottens any more, we've paid him bucketloads while he's underpeformed, we've offered him the full forward position next year and he's still ********ed off. If he thinks we're being tough by paying him based on his performance then he can ******** off.

Looks like goodbye but I'll wait until the Headline is Ottens says good bye, Nothing in that release has been quoted or a source named.

Tomorrow is another day

If this is true then get the farrk out ottens. You've been grossly overpaid for the last 3 years and now you've clearly shown your hand by chasing dollars.

I guess we can give some sort of credit to spud frawley for contributing to the downfall of this potential superstar.

Now let's play hard ball!!!!! Jude bolten and Ryan o'keefe and a first round pick

Apart from being delirious (whodoyouthinkyouareSheedy?), Jude's just signed a new 3-year deal which means he wont be going anywhere.

Personally I hope we keep Ryan as he's been quite good for us throughout the year.

Saddington plus our 2nd rounder seems fair considering the past 2-years injury history for both players.

FWIW, I never put stock in these trade rumours and inuendo as a lot of the time they are aimed at propping up a players price, or saving him from a pay reduction in this case.

I doubt he's going anywhere, but I would love to see him in Red & White as long as the asking price wasn't too high.

I have no problems if a player wants to the leave the club, just dont like people telling us they want to be a one club player and then a month or so later they decide to leave.

Hit the nail on the head kretchy.if his reasons are true in regards to he wants to leave is not a money issue then his statement about wanting to be a one club player is very hollow at best.

cheers!

Ottens now has a major Career choice. Does he want to be remembered as a mercenary who sucked a club dry and then moved on, or as one of those noble and loyal footballers who spent their career at a club, and gave their all?

A playing career lasts ten years, a reputation is for life. Look at which players keep a high profile in media and such after their playing days finish. It isn't the ones who ditched their clubs, chased money, or chased glory. Dermie, Garry Lyon, Dipper, Brownless.

There are very few people who showed any kind of disloyalty who are respected in the public eye, whether this is fair to them or not.

How are we to know that this is all true?
Has Ottens said anything about wanting to leave, he hasnt re-signed, but that could be because he is out of the country.
Won't beleive he wants out untill he says it himself, not from an unamed source and opposition clubs who say they are talking to him, means nothing

what a crock of ********, he wants to rejuvenate his career!!!!!!!

its got nothing to do with money apparently of course it does do you think he will go elsewhere for less than he is getting this year i dont think so, young bradley i think you have problems telling the truth mate.

i do recall a media interview on radio stating you would like to remain with the tiges and i believe walletman came out and stated you had confided in him that you would like to stay, mmmmm am i wrong in sensing that someone here is telling pork pies ..

as people keep saying the game is a business now, i would think that you have been paid handsomely over the years and not performed to expectations you would've liked to have repaid the club in some form, i think the word that comes to mind is loyalty....

mate i dont think you could lie straight in bed!!!!!!!

there have been a few football mercaneries over the years that have fallen on their own swords and my feeling is that you will be the next in a long line.

i hope these clubs that are after you are prepared to negoitate because i feel walletman and miller will be playing hardball, if thats the case mate you could end up anywhere, how does hawthorn sound!!!!!!!

after swans stuffing us around last year i think g.m will be looking elsewhere for trades mate, personally dont think you guys have much to offer.

There is no way that there will be a trade involving Saddington, he is coming off a knee reconstruction, how stupid do you thing GM and TW are

And Ottens has a recent history of back problems. Obviously there's a risk both ways there.

Personally, I like Saddo and as he can play forward and back I don't mind seeing him stick around. A knee reco isn't necessarily career ending now is it?

Anyways, out first pick probably isn't low enough on its own and it is all conjecture at this stage only. Simmonds is also reportedly on the market and you never know what/who might become available come trade week.

I would have thought a lowish pick and second tier player is appropriate given his recent run of injuries and high salary level, but its up to GM and TW.

I'd like him, but I wont slash my wrists if we dont get him.

Yeah i know that but Saddington is coming off one recently, so he hasnt proven himself yet, so you would have to offer something better

If Ottens doesnt agree to stay at Richmond, you guys shouldn't agree to any trade he wants......let him end up at the hawks/dogs :p

LOL

good call!!

I'd say let him end up at the bottom team but ........... :D

We cant complain that he wants out I mean thats how we got Brown, but I'd take Brown over Nottens anyday of the week.

LMFAO @ all the ottens lovers from a few months ago now bagging the crap out of him.

Richmond Footy Club will be better off without a big and overated log in our team.

"Dont let the door hit you on your butt on the way out brad".
