It looks like the Cats got it right, letting Moloney go to get Ottens. Moloney has been injury plagued, so on the one hand it is difficult to judge his performance this year and last, but on the other hand, a player who is hampered by injury is of questionable value.

We have more than covered Moloney's loss.

On the other hand Ottens in the ruck has added a whole new dimension to our game.

Thoughts??

I for one wasn't happy to see Moloney get traded and it is difficult to say if he had of stayed at Geelong that he would have suffered the same injuries as he has at the Demons. That is just purely speculation at best. Otto has been a great addition to the team as a Ruckman. I bet Otto is more than happy to be looking at a potential flag this year. Something he wouldn't be as a Richmond player. As for Brenton, I can only wish him well for the rest of his career.

From a Melbourne perspective (Yes, I'm a big Beamer fan as some here know) Geelong have done well, though I think we gave up a first round pick that was eventually Danny Meyer at the Tigers who has done nothing really, so it was a win-win for both teams. Richmond were the ones who got screwed in this.

Beamer has been injury plagued, he's out this week and I don't want to see him in the team until next year, he needs to have time off and get fit. He's still got 5+ years left in the game barring major injury and he's a very good player when fit.

Ottens has been fantastic for you guys this year and one of the more underrated players going around ATM.

5+?? 04 draftee? surely he has 7 or 8.

I was gutted when Moloney was traded... I rated him quite highly, but injuries have cruelled him and after a slow start, Ottens has really blossomed this year in the ruck. With hindsight it's been trade that has turned out heavily in Geelong's favour; Moloney's been injured and Richmond's draft picks haven't really showed much.

I actually was in favour of trading Wojcinski at the time. This year has certainly validiated my stupidity, because Bomber has become one of our most important players with his run out of defence.

Was wondering when some one would pick the scab on this little wound.
All the beemer lovers all say it was a good move in the end. Can we for once agree that the GFC got it right and that the recruiting team is a bloody good one and not the rabble at bitchandmoan.

The trade worked for us, Otto took some time to get fit but was always going to be a quality get. Moloney was an unknown, talent but as it has shown injury plagued. If he was still here we would not be where we are now and I doubt if he would be in the best 22 anyway.

Also Selwood would have been collected regardless, GFC had said they really wanted him but thought he would go too early.

What if's the game is full of them, just think Fev was to be a Geelong selection.

I never was of the belief that the Ottens trade was bad. I was rapt to get the big fella, and have defended him on many occasions on both the main board and Bay 13, mainly from rabid Tiger fans. I was merely putting up the suggestion based on our previous failures to lure big name recruits to Skilled Stadium. Having said that, in hindsight I'm glad they didn't sign (Rawlings, McKernan in particular).

As for our recruiting staff, they've been first class. Just have to look at the players we got out of the draft in 1999 (Corey, Chapman, Ling, Enright), 2001 (Bartel, Kelly, SJ, Gaz, D.Johnson), 2002 (Mackie, Lonergan, Callan), 2004 (Prismall, Nathan, Egan), 2005 (Varcoe, Gamble, Stokes) and 2006 (Selwood, Djerrkura, Hawkins). Interestingly, of the 39 players we've drafted since Bomber started at the club, 30 are still at the club. Those that have moved on include Spriggs, Ezra Bray, Foster, Lowther, Hamish Simpson, McCarthy and Cameron Thurley.

Add to that the trades we've done in the last few years:

Harley for pick 37 (Adam Morgan) = win
Mooney for Colbert, pick 53 (Clayton Lassock..who??) and pick 67 (Robert Shirley @ Adelaide) = win (we also got the draft pick which secured Enright in the Colbert deal too)
Ottens for Moloney and Pick 12 (Meyer) and Pick 16 (Pattison) = win
Pick 31 (Chapman) for Michael Mansfield = win

Only real loss we've had at the trade table in the last decade was when we traded pick 8 to Sydney for Jason Mooney in 1998. Sydney used that pick to snare Jude Bolton. Could have picked up the likes of Jude, Lenny Hayes, Ramanauskas, Brett Burton, Andrew Embley, or even Nick Davis! Hindsight's a wonderful thing though.

Even our rookie draft elevations in Rooke, Byrnes (to a degree) and possibly Sam Hunt have either paid dividends or will hopefully do so at a later date.

Interestingly, the three picks we used before Fev was snared in the 1998 draft were to pick up Peter Street, David Clarke and Wojcinski. :p
