What team would you describe as our biggest rivals. For me, it would be West Coast, as we are both top 8 teams, and we had epic battles in 05 and 06.

You'd have to say WC. Prior to them we really didn't have any rivalries. I hate North Melbourne and St Kilda but I wouldn't say we were rivals.

Saints as our rivals back in the day, West Coast now, and arguably Collingwood, just because I feel like when we beat them we'll celebrate like we've won the Premiership. Well, I will at least. They're the only team I've never seen us beat. :(

Carlton - They tried to kill us off as a club and then you have the 1945 Bloodbath Grand Final, they are our biggest rivals. St Kilda are up there and West Coast due to recent history of 05/06. Collingwood saved us, Kangaroos are more fan rivals than club and GWS are in Sydney but they are our little brother and will always will be.

Pure rivals... West Coast.
Most hated... would have to be out of North Melbourne, St Kilda and Carlton.

I 'get' why people hate Collingwood, but I can't find myself hating them. They make the competition interesting.

You've got to be kidding. All the inner city clube hate each other, and thats what we we were. That's what made the game great, and now the AFL is trying to take the triballism out of the game. Shame on them "It's a family game now". It always was. Sure there were fights and lots of pissed people, but lot's of wives and kids as well. Sure the Wiggle rivaly is there, but it's new and it's it is based more on respect than hatred. Everyone hated Collingwood, and I hope they still do. If you go back to the Blood Bath GF against Carlton it came about because we hated each other. Just because we are now in Sydney doesn't mean the don't still exist. And now those wingeing Mexicans have an extra reason to hate us - the salary cap allowance. Ever listened to Eddy moan on and on about it? I hate Brisbane because they're Brisbane, I hate Adelaide because we can't beat them and they knocked us out of the 96 finals. I hate Mebourne because they're establishment, Geelong because they make us play them at that tin pot little ground. I hate Port Melbourne because its a traditional rivaly even if we aren' in the same comp, but tradion must be retained! I hate....

I also think in the last few years, West Coast have been our main rival. I agree with the Saints as our rival back in the days, also North Melbourne since we were South Melbourne.
In the first round of this year, the media tried to strike up a Sydney rivalry between us and GWS but I think it might take a few years down the track for a much fan-heated Derby such as the one in the west between the Eagles and Freo.

I'll always hate them for trying to kill us off but I don't think that really makes it a rivalry. The majority of Carlton supporters probably don't hate us and I would assume the majority of Swans fans today wouldn't even be aware of what happened.

I vaguely remember that, getting a bit of dementia happening here. I always thought Eddie had something to do with that, or was that just getting rid of our concesions?

Carlton, they are filth and our natural enemies. We have a terrific rivalry with West Coast in the modern era but for me it will always be Carlton, I hate the bastards.

I have voted for West Coast just because of the two Grand Finals and very close games. The team I would most like to beat is Collingwood simply because we have not been able to for years. We came close last year but it was not to be. I also have to say beating Fremantle this year was a joy to behold! Ballyntyne (probably incorrect spelling) is my pet hate.

Even tounge in cheek seems to be too subtle for you. But you hate me cause I take issuewith your pathalogical hatred of McVie . Having said that, for most of the last century, certainly up to the fifties and into the sixties, the rivalry between South and Port was intense. Then the VFA was nearly as strong as the VFL, so the two clubs were recruiting and any sponsorship from the same hunting ground so the rivalry was understandable. Clearly it has now dissapated. It wasn't that long ago some of the reserves played for Port, but it didn't work out well. Pity really. Keep on hating.
PS Sorry about the typos etc in my OPv. Carelss, really.

I was having a joke with Malfan, it had nothing to do with you. And get one thing straight, i don't hate McVie (as you call him ) i just believe, and have from day one that he is overated !

Still getting the typos in. Shouldn't do this at work perhaps.
Agree to diagree on that one. But it did seem that it was directed at me. Not that I mind. Got me to put a thought or two together.

No worries , i just wish people would understand that i don't hate him.

:O Bedders why do you hate McElite?

surprised no-one thinks Essendon. We tend to have really close, cracking games. From "Pluggers Point" to Goodesy's miss, they are always high quality close games. I'm shiting it about tonight.

Good article in today's Age for those that haven't read it:

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/opposites-are-drawn-together-20120608-201nk.html

Opposites are drawn together

ESSENDON and Sydney have been serving up quality games of football for a long time. And there's no reason to think tonight's clash at Etihad Stadium will see any departure from the usual script.
