Was a bit worried at the end of last year with Lake and Hale retiring, Suckers moving on and Simpkin and Grimley being delisted, that maybe we'd suffer with depth.

Looking at our first and second 22 I do think we are ok..

FF: Gunston - Roughie - Puopolo
HF: Breust - Schoey - Rioli
Ce: Shiels - Mitchell - Smith
HB: Birchall - Brand - Stratton
FB: Burgoyne - Frawley - Gibson

Ru: McEvoy
RR: Hodge
Ro: Lewis

I/C: Ceglar, Duryea, Hill and Hartung

==========================

FF: Fitzpatrick - O'Brien - Hardwick
HF: Burton - Sicily - Webster
Ce: O'Rourke - Whitecross - Willsmore
HB: Howe - Spangher - JML
FB: Miles - Heatherley - Litherland

Ru: Pittonet
RR: Langford
Ro: Lovell

I/C: Surman, Stewart, Langford and Glass

(Woody injured)

There's also not a lot of dead wood on our list, so will be exciting at AFL and VFL level this year.

What do others think?

We won't miss for a second,Suckers,Grimley or Simpkin.Ceglar will thereabouts cover Hale.
Lake is the biggie, don't think we can cover him immediately but full confidence in Brandt-in time.
Also, best bunch of young guys we've drafted for ages, looks good.

I reckon we say this at this time of year every year! But, that said, I reckon a couple of these newbies could turn into players. Just a matter of taking that next step (or three or four!).

Why is Brand ahead of Spangher on the depth chart? Not sure he's really proven anything at AFL level yet
Because Spanghers time has been and gone.

Barring injuries to key players we should easily cover the 3 forced changes to the team that won last years premiership, however with us starting the season 2 stars down it could get difficult if we have to cover for any more. What worries me most is losing a combination of players like Gunston and McEvoy/Ceglar on top of Roughead that would be a nightmare

Don't write Spang off just yet, wish he wasn't always injured though. If a back tall goes down he can slot in
and there's no worries. His strength is his discipline, always doing the right thing, safe and reliable. Having
said that he's nearly 29 so only a couple of years left.

I agree somewhat
but Spang played more games last year despite being constantly injured
and Brand hasnt played 1 full game yet.

Though I can feel the potential,
just hope Spang pulls through as back up for the back up just in case.

Our depth does look good though

If the club is smart, and they are, Brand will be given every opportunity ahead of Spangher.

True. But I'm not sure I agree with a lot of posters here who are putting him into the top 22 right now. For me, he is yet to prove himself. Sure, give him a chance, but until then it is entirely speculation (or hope).

For sure. Brand has looked excellent this preseason. Didnt appreciate how quick he was nor how good his kicking is. His positioning is great and is what i remember his strength as being. He will get outbodied now and then but he looks like he has the confidence to back his ball reading ability like the great man Brian Lake which is huge. Exciting prospect.

I'm more worried about how we'll cover for Roughead than Lake going on what I saw in the preseason, the first half of our fixture is nasty. A lot's riding on Schoenmakers.

Going smaller at both ends of the ground is a good option but will hurt us against some teams. We will need improvement from unexpected sources, something I think is essential to winning a flag in any year.

Yeah, absolutely.

I don't agree that he's a good kick, although I don't disagree with what you've said either. It's not that he's a good kick per se, it's more that he's a smart kicker in that he knows his limitations and doesn't try to go above and beyond that unlike Frawley did on numerous occasions last year.

His reading of the flight of the ball is fantastic and combined with his huge arm span, he's got all the unteachable tools a defender needs.

Losing hale and lake certainly reduced depth in those areas. We had three finals standard rucks and two full backs

Rough would have been great depth there. No doubt depth is less, but the next focus for retirements is elite mids, so if youngsters get more game tim, the renovation may be relatively pain free

I picked Brand over Spang because Spang is always injured.

If Spang could stay injury free he'd be one of the better key defenders in the league, on output he is head and shoulders above Brand. Brand has the scope, and I agree because of Spangs inability to stay on the field he deserves first crack.

Contra to my arguments, all the players im talking about were relatively easily recruited from other clubs, so its a short term rather an a structural issue

OK, Sure I'd heard on the TV that we'd be retiring 2, 2 & 2 starting last season (Lake & Hale). Who are the next two and the two after? The four I think are Hodge, Burgoyne, Mitch & Gibbo. However in which order will they go?

Likely to be Burgoyne and Hodge next, then Sammy and Gibbo. However this doesn't mean the 2 and 2 have to happen in consecutive years. It all will depend on their form. Could be 1 and 1 and 2 or none this year and 3 next year. I doubt it will go 2 and 2 and 2 in consecutive years.

I dont think spang is nearly as good as you are making him out to be here

Na, disagree.. He is a good contested Mark, cuts the angles well and always makes a contest. Maybe not one of the better KPD'ers but certainly a good one. Injuries have hurt.
