I've just seen some of the devastaing vision Channel 9 has brought to our living rooms with a cameraman in a fire emergency vehicle, As the fires roared through Canberra, It was as if living hell had been raised, It was all aglow with sparks and you couldn't see much further than a handball in front of yourself, Much so to the point that while filming the truck they were in accidentally hit another abandoned car...

The cameraman had climbed aboard to glean some good vision for the nightly news...Fair dinkum; This bloke is in line for a Logie, You mark my words...The sounds the colour was amazing...

If you get a chance to watch tonights edition of Nine news or ACA, Take a look at the vision he got it is stupefying...People in panic looking to fight the impossible...It was as the saying goes..."Like trying to pizz into a bushfire"

But, I want you to bear in mind...Next time you see a firey at the pub, Wander over and buy them a beer...These guys are legends and heroes in their own right...

Without fear or a second thought they jump head first to save property, animals and lives, Often leaving family gatherings, and at times their own flaming homes to save yours and mine.

As a kindred gesture as small as it may seem a few weeks back we lobbed up to the local Fire Station with our Star Cruiser loaded with Frosty Fruits cold Drinks and goodies and got a heap of locals to the station to meet these

R E L U C T A N T H E R O E S...

They were so wrapped to see us!!! Man...we were in awe of what THEY do day in day out...They kept telling us they weren't anything special...Over and over...Bull*****! These guys had been randomly stationed, away from their families for months on end...Never knowing exactly what was around the corner...

So I ask that all BigFooty.com patrons Just say g'day and smile next time you see a firey or emergency volunteer...It could be your life, house, dog, cat, or whatever that they're saving tomorrow...

Great post! Great point, too.

Firefighters really do put themselves way out for the comfort of others.

You reminded me of that scene in the Granville movie "Day Of The Roses" when the emergency crew were served up beers at the pub by the locals.

Truly wonderful spirits.

They are getting a bit of a blast in Canberra, mainly from residents who have lost there homes, which is understandable, but in my mind unjustified. They did a fantastic job on Saturday in condition that were every bit as bad as Ash Wednesday fires in Victoria and South Australia in 1983. Some say even worse.
What we in Canberra endured on Saturday was the most freakish conditions every encounted in this country, and according to some American anywhere. We could have had a 1000 more firefighters and hundreds more trucks, and it wouldn't have made that much difference.

Quite understandable that they'd be angry, Devo. But as the Chief Minister I think it was said, there were 400 houses burnt out and only a little over 100 units available, they can't be expected to be everywhere to fight a fire of that scale. Hope after a bit of time has passed those residents will start to realise that and appreciate the efforts the firey's put in.

yeh and theres also only a certain amount of firefighters, the majority of which are volunteers , maybe if some of the whingers joined up then there would be a few more.
they put their lives on the line and deserve a bit of gratitude!
