Was a bit disappointed to read that Fev kicked 3 goals on him in what amounts to a half of a full game of footy.

I'd imagine he's still learning how to play in the key position, and playing on Fev will do his development a world of good. I'd like to see him given a chance at FB, but keep in mind that we are now developing some kids that could play there in a couple of years - namely Hartlett and Austin.

Interesting article... so does this confirm who our new full back will be???

It sure confirms he'll be picking up the monsters: Lynch, Hall, Tredrea, Richo, Thompson, etc.. Suits me.

I haven't got much time for Hartlett myself, and Austin is way way down the track. I'm pretty happy with Setanta doing the job, however we might have to look at someone else to play on the Lloyd type forwards who use speed as their weapon instead of brute strength.

I am genuinely excited by the two irish boys ..i believe they will give us Blues fans great enjoyment over the next 5-10 years .
there will be ups and downs but thats all part and parcel of footy

Why is that?

That seems a bit harsh gandaal. The guy has been injured a fair amount of time he's been in Melbourne, and the few times that I have seen him, he has impressed.

Would you care to elaborate on what your issues are with Hartlett?

Why is that?

Injury prone, disposal issues last year, still struggled to make it into the VFL senior team during the few weeks where he was fit, and a natural forward we're trying to make into a defender (remind you of anyone?).

And I remember watching him get absolutely thrashed by Treadrea during a pre season match last year, only to hear all the Hartlett lovers go on about how well he did afterwards.

As a tall defender or a forward I'd prefer plenty of others to play before he gets his opportunity.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he makes it. I'd be ecstatic to be proven wrong.

I must have been at a different game to you mate. I could have sworn I walked away from the game thinking that he had done ok on Tredrea.

Given the amount of injuries Hartlett as had, it doesn't surprise me that he struggled to get back into the Bullants senior team during the season.

However, I think 2007 will be a crunch year for him, and he really needs to establish himself in the Carlton team is he wants to be a part of the club long term.

How many points did Port win by in that game? I was up sitting near one of the goal ends and it was embarrassing to watch Hartlett and co get pushed around like they were nothing. Every Port forward movement resulted in a goal.

I'm not saying it was Hartletts fault, he was just a kid and everyone was disgraceful that day, but I wouldn't be holding it up as the guys one and only shining light.

98 points i think i was watching from near the coaches box on the wing. Daniel Pearce killed us if i remember right, after watching that game i wasn't suprised he did so well during the season.

Where are all these superstar Full Backs that are able to stop super quick Full Forwards on a lead to a good kick? Setanta will be as good as any of the Full Backs in the league.

Football is played on a field, not on a spreadsheet.

Exactly. You used defenders like Dale Morris to take forwards like that. We need a player of a similar ilk to take forwards like Lloyd and Williams. I think we were all hoping Russell would turn into that defender but I don't think he's quite at that level yet.

Don't under estimate Setanta's speed, the initial burst is competitive but his closing speed is nothing short of sensational.

As for others that can play on those speedy types (ala Williams), how about Anderson, Benji, Edwards, Flint and even Grigg if we had to. All these guys have great speed.

Hartlett IMO as a defender is more suited to CHB, he has the size to play FB but doesn't have the speed. Not to mention his big left foot would be more than useful on the half back line.

I agree. Carlos' speed isn't his issue, its turning. Olaughlin turned him continually when they matched up in Rnd 22 (after Hall went up the ground having been very well beaten).

Will be a huge bonus for us this year.
I thought Austin was a forward?

I rate Setanta's progress as one of the most significant develoments in 2006. Setanta is bigger and faster than all FF's and CHF's in the AFL, and bigger than most of the resting rucks. His athletic advantage over his oponents is his big advantage. No one else has a 200cm KP defender with his speed and agility. Something that isn't appreciated, is his excellent, inate ability to read the play and ball movement. This is something he obviously had when playing other codes, and is something that cannot be taught. He still lacks experience in terms of getting himself in the right position, but with some guidance last year he was improving with every game. His marking ability is just elite. A brilliant overhead mark - with a massive leap, and are all one-grab efforts. Setanta's kicking is the most maligned aspect of his game, but there are some unusual aspects to it. First of all, despite his awkward right-foot style, he manages to hit targets at full pace. Also he is a fantastic left foot kick, with unbelievable distance, and actually looks a lot more natural on that side. When he gets a bit more confidence, I'm sure he'll start using his left more. Setanta adds a lot of flexiblity to our defensive lineup. No longer are we lacking height ans size in defence with Thornton, Bower, Flint and Hartlett as other KP defensive options. :)

If Setanta can keep improving on what he showed towards the end of last year, then he'll be a great addition to our backline and along with Thornton and hopefully Saddington we might have the start of being able to hold some of the opposition forward lines. Thornton is one of the most crucial players on our list for 2007.

Bower, Hartlett, Austin, Flint & Jamison are the unknows and therefore we cannot include them into our sides. If one takes the next step, then that would be a big plus for 2007, but for now we must keep developing them and figers crossed.

Setanta is there already if he develops anymore he will be an A grade afl defender. 200 cm strong fast backman do not grow on trees

If Aisake is better than Setanta, it will become rememebered as on of the best recruiting moves in AFL history. The vision of the recruiting department was extraordinary in getting these 2 down at Carlton.

Completely agree parrot. Well said.

I think Setanta is my other boy...;)
