With Ottens out and Mumford doing his calf i think today and Dawson doing his ankle, lets hope Trent West is fit and firing for next week or we wont have any ruckmen. After today, i didnt think Blakey did too bad but it is obvious that we will miss Brad in the next few weeks. Really wish Mumford didnt get injured today

Compared to who exactly? Blake is terrible and like rounds 1-9 last year we will struggle in the clearances until Otten makes it back.

yeah i agree we will struggle but Simmonds didnt do anything so Blakey must of had some influence on that

I just find most centre-bounce ruck contests laughable these days. Both ruckmen are up and down without even touching the ball, or they're too busy wrestling and falling over. Not confident with Blake as no.1 ruck, but willing to give him a chance to step up over the next few weeks.

Isn't mumford still a rookie until rnd 11 anyway?
Seemed like blake did 3 fifths of **** all.
He will get slaughtered by Fraser next week

Or the umpires pull out a nothing free kick and hand it to one side or the other at random.

yeah but egan and now hunt are both on the long term injury list

Hopefully we don't struggle as much as the Hawks - they got creamed by Jolly tonight, Sydney set a new record for hitouts

Does that pave the way for both Mumford and Laidler to play AFL?

Yep. We can also LTI list Mitch Brown and promote another if needed

Mumford the Man

Time for Blake to justify his role with the club, seeing the club put enough faith in him by trading away Steven King at the end of 2007, I don't think he has delivered much more than standard fare for a long time.

I saw a whole lot of nothing out of Blake in the pivotal third quarter yesterday, for a guy who should be able to handle the No 1 ruck duties he was pretty ineffectual with Richmond taking the ball out of the centre at will until Harry Taylor went into the ruck.

I saw plenty from Mumford last year in his few senior games, even in the game against Freo when he rucked the last part of the game his bigger body stood up well on Sandilands and he is a very keen competitor.

With Ottens (Surely the one player other than Scarlo we could least afford to lose) out for at least four matches I think it is time for the Geelong Brains trust to really put some pressure on Blake and see how Westie and Mumford go with extended periods in the ruck.

Thoughts anyone??

With Brad Ottens out for the next 4 to 6 weeks, the opportunity will present Mark Blake with a chance to stamp himself as a premier AFL ruckman in the AFL.

Does Geelong have ruck coach who can tutor Blake, Mumford and West on a weekly basis?

The last ruck coach at Geelong was Damian Bourke. He has definitely gone underground since he got in a bit of trouble with his business ventures.

If you look at Geelong's ruck history since the 1960s, our successful ruckmen have been tap on ruckmen who create the play ie Polly Farmer, Sam Newman, Rod Blake, John Mossop, Damian Bourke and Brad Ottens.

Rod Blake was a damn good tap on ruckman for the Cats in the 70s and 80s. He formed a good partnership with Sam Newman and John Mossop.

Well, I just hope Mark Blake can add another dimension to his ruck play so he can be able to take the game by the scruff of the neck in the future.

Mumford would be a great offset to Blake with his overall robustness and work ethic along side Blake's tap work, would keep the opposition ruckmen off guard.

I wish the club would hurry up and start moving the list around so we will know whether its Laider or Mumford (or hopefully both!) are nominated and can play.

We do not have a ruck coach. I think I heard on the radio that we're the only club without one. Considering our rather strong financial position, you think we'd be able to employ someone on a part-time basis at least. And I don't mean that clown Crackers Keenan.

throw in a goal kicking coach as well...

Considering our rather strong financial position,

Which is overshadowed by that little stadium shindig, and we would hope they have a follow up plan within this decade to push the capacity to 30k.

Mark Blake would have to be getting the very best of advice from one interested family member! Every contest would be analysed by his dad and the how to's, passed on.

I reckon that bad ruck advice is worse than no ruck coach. I have had little faith in one or two recent past ruck coaches. Especially the one with the big mouth.
Brad ottens has got it all figured out and he is probably the one having the biggest input into the drills etc.
