There a bucket load of these threads around but I'm interested in everyone's opinions on their top 5 most most overrated players.

NOTE: This does NOT necessarily mean that you think they are bad but more than you think they recieve much unwarranted praise from media and supporters. Here are mine

1. Bate
For some reason he is seen as a barometer for the melbourne team but he is horrible below his knees ('fumble fingers') and has the turning circle of a double decker bus
2. Ablett
Elusive player as we all know and never goes to ground but gets a lot of cheap 'one 2's' and is far too handball happy. for my liking. One of the only players that will have 40 touches(albeit 30 handballs) and not have any influence on the game.
3. Pendlebury
Similar to Ablett in that he gets a lot of uncontested possessions deep in defence and the half back line. he is a great kick no question but Dale Thomas can break a game open to the degree that Pendles could only dream of and I believe he is the far better and dangerous of the pies young duo.
4. Cotchin
He has all the tools to be a great player but for some reason I believe this potential tag has been going for a bit too long. Form/Injury continue to affect the young tiger and his averages (stats wise) are very very unflattering for someone who has carried hype for so long.
5. Sam Gilbert
Has no right foot and it does cost his team. He also gets caught for holding the ball a lot and can give away too many careless free kicks.

Sam Fisher. I rate Gilbert way higher than him. Not saying he's bad, but just not as good as some seem to believe.

Chris Judd. Won't say much here, as I've made my thoughts known in other threads. Don't want this to end up in a mudslinging match.

Nic Naitanui. The hype doesn't match the output. He's young though and I don't say this as anything against him, but more so the media infatuation with his small glimmers of brilliance in games.

Cyril Rioli. Great player and has some smooth moves, but Hawthorn supporters and commentators in particular seem to orgasm over a few twists and turns while overlooking his at times poor disposal.

Nick Riewoldt - For a bloke that some have said is close to the best Centre Half Forward of all time he averages about 0.1 goals per game more than Stephen Milne, whilst also being the target about 90% of the time over him. You could forgive that if there was a premiership medallion in there. Great player.. Completely over-rated.

Pendlebury btw does alot more in and under work than you give him credit for and his skills by hand and foot are sublime. Lacks - kicking penetration (not that his kicks aren't great, just not say didak or malceski good) , burst speed and a bust pack ability.

Lol your funny

4. Cotchin

I do laugh at "for so long" this is Cotchin's 3rd year. Is it really THAT long?

Anyway, what you're misinterpreting about Cotchin is the fact that he is having to play a role beyond his years. As you may know Nathan Foley was probably our best midfielder up until this year (where arguable Martin has overtaken him) and with Foley being injured intermittently and now out for the rest of the year Cotchin has had to take the role that Foley made his own.

Not quite sure what these stats are that make the kid unflattering. He's averaging 19 disposals per game as a 20 year old (yes he is only 20 still). Any other kid in the AFL does that and he's brandished as a gun in the making. You see (and stats back this up) Cotchin has been playing an in and under role for basically the whole season, he is ranked 14th in the league in clearances (and leads the Tigers in the stat too). Players to better him in this stat are Judd, Selwood, Swan, Cooney, Hayes. So yeah some pretty good company.

FWIW too 3 out of the 4 matches (Cotchin was rested for the Geelong game) that Foley has played have opened Cotchin up to play a non in and under role that he has taken the fair brunt of this year and in doing so averaged 24 disposals per game in that period.

Once Foley comes back and can fit back into his role it will allow Cotchin to not be the one having to be in and digging the ball out of the pack all the time, allowing him to use his great skill and poise that we've all seen.

And lastly, he is still just 20 years old and into his 3rd year (and first year of real consistent footy) and we're only really just seeing what he can truly do and if you've actually been following him it's pretty damn good.

The people questioning Cotchin probably questioned Dale Thomas a couple of years ago as well. Some players take time to develop. It mustn't be easy when your team has been down the bottom of the ladder for a few years and you don't have players of the quality that Joel Selwood had around him when he began his career.

Luke Ball A good player who will make most teams 22 but not a star.

Cotchin is a bad call. To early to rate either way, looks to be a good one in the future. I agree on Chris Judd. A quality player, but not as good as the media makes him out to be. That isn't his fault though.

Agree to an extent on ball. Not a star but a bloody hard worker who puts everything into his games. Don't think the media paint him as a star though....

Disagree on Judd... Absolute gun. Is the only reason why Carlton "could" make the 8. Regardless of his poor delivery, would be the best or second best player in any team in the comp.

Right.

A fairer comment would be that Judd's senior teammates are overrated.

Specifically Carrazzo, Scotland, the retired Stevens and possibly Simpson.

I always laugh at opposition supporters and even Paul Roos pumping up our midfield as one of the best.

Judd played with Cox, Cousins, Kerr, Braun, Fletcher, Stenglein, Chick, Seaby, Glass, Hunter and a few smart mature role players at WC.

They blocked for him.

That was an A grade midfield and team.

Koutoufides was a superstar in 2000, yet even he had Ratten, Camporeale, Bradley, SOS, Allan, Hickmott, Lappin, Rice, Hamill, Whitnall, Brown and McKay for support.

That was a better midfield and team than the side Judd plays with now.

Judd would truly dominate if he played with St Kilda, Collingwood, the Dogs, Hawthorn, Sydney and Geelong.

Judd's teammates expect him to do it all.

Nic Naitanui.

Cyril Rioli.
These are the big two for mine. Though they're still fresh, and with time they should both increase their output.. I can see how non-WC supporters would be pissed off at the Naita love that was present earlier this year & late last year. It's at the point now that people seem to forget he's a 2nd year ruckman sharing the duty with someone like Dean Cox.

Heath Shaw. Only because pies supporters get way too excited when he has good games and start throwing talk of AA around, then next week the opposition tags him out of the game.

I disagree to an extent again, but only because opposition coaches rate him so highly that he usually cops a defensive tag. When he doesn't he runs riot.

The problem is to reach his peak he somehow needs to be able to shake that tag. The backline is probably the hardest place of all to do it though.

Good Post :thumbsu:

Carlton's midfielders need to stand up and follow Judd's leadership.

Cameron Bruce (now): not in the past but since last year has been pathetic. DIsposal is aweful...can get the ball but then stuffs it up

Bruce needs to go back to the half forward line. He still knows where the goals are and is a clever player. Today's brainfade doesn't change that.

To The General, you'd hope that McLean can come in and provide a bit of the grunt work that Judd provides and free him up to play a more outside roll. It'd help his body out and let him use his pace more often. At least, that's what I thought you recruited McLean for.
