PROMINENT former Melbourne forward David Schwarz has arranged a Thursday meeting with Demons’ president Don McLardy and is offering to lend assistance to the beleaguered club.

Schwarz said he had been in contact with a number of former players who were willing to become involved in the club.
"I know a lot of ex-players are in the same as me – they’re willing top put their hands up."
He said, as a former player, "I’m not just going to sit there and allow it continue" – a view "the Ox" said was shared by other ex-Demon players.

Great to hear :thumbsu:

Good on him. This is a time when we need people to get around our playing group and help them re-learn what they love about football. While the general reaction after these games is to give these players a spray I think the feather duster would be a better option in getting confidence back into the group. I understand Garry's position and why he doesn't want to get involved and I think it's for the best but if some of our other past greats can get around these boys it should help with their confidence on field. Also glad the club has shut the doors on their training sessions, need some privacy away from the media. I hope the boys are just staying away from all footy media for the rest of the week. Focus on themselves and their team-mates.

Super news. Not sure what they can actually do, or what McLardy and the board will want them to do, but it's a positive step. Glad that rather than just commenting on it some of them are happy to do something about it as well.

What speaks to me is the fact that our former players are willing to band together because of what the club has done for them, and are trying to change the culture of the club so that our current and future players understand their role as footballers and how grateful they should be.

Yep :thumbsu:

At the very least, it's got to help from a psychological standpoint.

Obviously nobody knows what difference this will make as far as clear tangible changes at the club go - but hopefully we'll find out some kind of news in that regard later on too.

How exactly is he going to lend assistance? He says he doesn't want to be part of the board but wants to gain an understanding of how the FD works?

If he is involved in the hiring of a new CEO it is pretty damn similar to Gary Lyons efforts a few years back...

Great to hear. I read somewhere that he'd had a falling out with a lot of people from the club, and that he didn't feel he was welcome down there. Really glad he's changed his mind because the bloke bleeds red and blue.

Maybe he wants to get involved with the playing group, put a positive spin on us in the media etc.

I don't idolize the bloke for nothing. True colours coming out when they are needed. What do you think beton5 is

Ah that explains a lot haha, well played.

Everyone get around the Ox.

Just saw the Ox on the footy show.

Good on him for getting on the front foot and helping your club at a time of need. I haven't been a big fan of Melbourne over the years but I do know how you are all feeling and hopefully He and others can get on board and help turn it around.

Positive signs can be just around the corner with some good decisions and hard work.

Good luck guys.

More than happy for him to get involved, but this is no different to what Lyon said and did last year.

Put some of our soft kids in a wrestle with The Ox. Then we'll see how soft they are.
