For the first time in ages I genuinely have zero clue how our best 23 will look come round 1.
Think we will see

FB: Sinn, Rat, Burgoyne
HB: Faz, Aliir, Rozee(c)
C: McKinlay, Drew, Evans
HF: Richards, Lukocious, Berry
FF: Whitlock, Georgiadies, Stephenson
Fol: ____, Butters, Burgmann
Int: Byrne-Jones, , _, , _

Think Byrne-Jones will play as someone who can play across three lines. I see Visintini leapfrogging Sweety at some stage, is it this year? Soldo may be fit again and back to the best Ruckman on our list, as he was when he first got here. I think we will overload the last 4 bench spots with Mids, but could also very easily see Todd Marshall as the extra Tall on the pine. I suspect we will see a lot of games into McKinley, Lai, Liddy and Watkins.

Interesting watch.

I’m fairly certain that Ramm will be playing rd 1.

I'm thinking with the new ruck rule that Sweet is done and Visentini will be the number one ruck.

Durdin will probably make it in there somewhere.
Moraes would have to be close.
Marshall or Ramm would be in the mix.
Another pure midfielder like Wehr or Lorenz is definitely needed.
Would like to see Lai get a gig.

I really like Evans and Mckinlay as the wingers. It seems like we will actually use them correctly.
I like Burgoyne down back but we will see.
Stephenson really helps out our small forwards. Hopefully he has a stellar year.
Can't wait to see what Berry can do.
Looking forward to seeing what Bergman can do.

Exciting times.

If we stay fit, we are going to have a really strong Magpies team. We are still yet to sign marquee players for Maggies right?
Somehow it seems we have a lot of depth compared to last year.

I can see all of Wehr, Durdin, Stephenson, Berry, Marshall, Brodie and Lorenz in our round 1 team. Maybe even Mackinlay as well. Going to be a lot unlucky players missing out.

Main things I want to see this year are:
  • Play two proper dedicated wings that are used in attack and defence, not just as decoys and extra inside mids.
  • No longer bombing for territory and to the pockets.
  • No longer full team pressing up so high that we constantly leak fast break and over the top goals.
  • Not taking the foot off the pedal when we get up on teams.

Why do you say that? Intel or a feeling?
Going by the numerous positive comments regarding his fitness, approach and strength from coach and player interviews. Plus I really rate him from what I saw of him at Glenelg and Maggie’s. He is a diligent checker but also proactive. I feel he is one of those players who will thrive playing at a higher level. I’m also not confident that BZT and Rat will be the long term solutions down back.

And an experienced sanfl coach

I love the sound of Ramm playing round 1, but I’m not sure that happens without injuries. Allir is a lock, Rat put together some good footy before injuries, a fit BZT seems to be underrated on here, and then they are looking at Marshall as a tall who can use the ball well.

BZT is nursing a bruised heel, the spot is very much up for contention.

I don't think you can afford to have Aliir, Rat and BZT in the same team - thats 3-4 free goals per week from their shit disposals alone - let alone any kicked directly on them. Marshall and Ramm are far better users and that's what Carr will hopefully be looking to adding to our backline

Agreed, I too believe the club can't afford to have Aliir, Ratugolea and BZT in the same team, all 3 are regular ball burners, Aliir is only effective in the 3rd tall mop up role (as is BZT), and neither are genuine key defenders.

To his credit Ratugolea was showing good form at full back before last season's untimely injury, but according to a geebung supporter I have occasional contact with he has seen it all before and his 3 or 4 good games were often followed up by mistake ridden efforts a Managatang magoo's player would have been ashamed of.

With the change of coach and a better game plan hopefully Rat can find the consistency required to hold his place in the Power line up, which Aliir and BZT will also need to do to stay in the team ahead of Marshall and Ramm who as you suggest `are far better users of the ball.'
The key to Marshall is of course that he remains healthy but if he can I have no doubt the talent is there for him to become a successful tall defender.

Early days yet, but IMO Carr won't muck around with players who are either out of form or not up to the task for the role they have been assigned, and we will see regular changes until he gets the balance he wants at both ends of the ground!

There was a decent period there last season that Rat was in AA form, he was playing that good. Problem is yet another injury ruined that run.
I’m more bullish on Rat than most people. If he can play at that level for a full season he’s easily our best defender. There’s probably a pretty big IF there and could have just been a purple patch.

It seemed like Rat was taught how to play down back because it was more his body work and positioning that seemed to get him good interception opportunities. He looked like a bigger version of Steven May he was that good.

So Rat's form looks to be sustainable but you never know.

Don’t forget, a lot of our defenders with their “bomb scare” kicking was a side effect of Hinkley’s super aggressive full team high press, also instructions to go for ridiculous kicks through the centre of the ground. Always would end up a fast break heading back over their heads and make the decision making look ten times worse.

Our defenders just looked confused on what to do half the time, which I predominantly put on Hinkey and the game style, not the individual.

In the latest interview, Hartlett sounded pretty bullish about Ramm’s chances of playing Round 1. He highlighted Ramm’s high footy IQ and the fact he’s 205cm+ and absolutely ripped.

I’m backing Rammjet. 💪

Esava didn't play tall in those games

Geelong - Rat on Dangerfield, L.Jones on Cameron
GWS - Rat on C Brown, BZT on Hogan
Melb - Rat on Melksham, BZT on Petty

Ramm will take the BZT role on the best or tallest talls
