With this whole Pagan playing hard ball over Thornton thing do you think he is bluffing or do you think he really will refuse all trades for the rest of the week? Personally I think Thornton is a tossa and I don't want him at the club.

Also do you think Pagan will be more likely to trade Thornton if he believes he can get Polack in the PSD.

Can you imagine the backlash if we lose T-Bird for nothing? IMO, he's bluffing! He's trying to get the absolute best deal for Thornton!

I just wish the club would shut it's mouth on matters like Gardiner and Thornton.

We seem to be always backing ourselves into corners everytime we open our mouths.

By saying we wont be entertaining any suggestions of trading thornton it makes us look stupid if we do a backflip and trade him and ever dumber for not trying to get something for him if he goes to the PSD.

All they had to say was no comment and it meant we hadn't closed all doors to possible solutions.

I think that if we know that we will be getting Polak in the PSD, they might start coming out with comments like "We might consider a very good offer, but it has to be inticing to us to let Thornton go. Otherwise, he is going no-where"

Otherwise, you will still see them taking the hardline stance until Friday and then cut a deal with the Hawks for #24 and #33 and giving up nothing else apart from Thornton.

If the club are able to get the right deal for Thornton, they will be able to come out and say that they did everything in their power to keep him at the club, but when it became totally obvious that the kid wanted out we got the best deal possible for the club. Nice little out, and puts the blame totally on Thornton.

Can you imagine the backlash if we lose him for just pick 24?

I think that there would be more backlash if we lost him for just pick #24 than if we stood our ground and let the disloyal ****er go into the PSD...

If we are just going to take picks for him, then we want #24 and #33 like I said

That would be a fair and equitiable deal

Why would we use our PSD pick 1 to retain a player who would resent it?

We won't be doing that. I think we'll be opening negotiations today or tomorrow after getting knocked back for the last time by Bret directly.

We'll certainly be dealing on Russell at the least.

Wouldn't be as bad as if we lost him for nothing!
Not from me it wouldn't be. I'd rather he went for nothing in the PSD and ended up at an interstate club than have the Hawks and he pull this **** and get everything they want while we just get scraps.

Hell, I'd rather redraft him at whatever exorbitant price he sets just to kick the table over.

How we handle this will set an example for every other player on the list. If we bend over and ask for more we'll get it.

I did agree with you early on, but I don't think anyone respects us anyway. If we can get 24 and 33 it probably is fair conpensation in this draft and our supporters understand it's about disloyalty.

Actually, now that I think about it, I'll go further than this. I'd offer Brisbane cash and salary cap incentive for them to pick Thornton up. If we paid $100k of his salary to destroy their plans, it would be worth it in the long run.

Why do you say this? I havn't got a problem with a fair trade but the PSD is also an option which would be out of your hands!

Bring on the cricket.............I'm getting very depressed watching this trade week.
I can see tears by Friday night.

While many of you may know that I have defended the coach and the board on numerous occasions........generally on the grounds that the accusations against them were rumour and innuendo.

Both Thornton and Russell wanting to leave says one of two things to me:
a) They are weak dogs who have no stomach for a fight and want to go to a more promising outfit (debatable whether Power and Hawks are, but there you go)

b) Some of the players are miffed with the coach and/or board and want out. Russell I can see fitting this category as he could whinge that he has had a lack of opportunity. I would argue that he hasn't been a consistent enough performer to hold his spot.....again a debatable point.

I guess my point is that this does start to build a case against the current board and their ability to give the players confidence that we are going somewhere.
Some of you may think me a hypocrit, but I have said all along, show me some evidence and I will hapily support getting the board or the coach out........sadly, two young players wanting to leave in one week is building a circumstantial case...........:(

One of the big things that pisses me off about all this is how the players have ambushed the club instead of taking their grievences to the club. I realise that it's hardly atypical, but it still ****s me.

Great Post - have been thinking along the same lines. Though I can't understand why Thornton would dislike Pagan (at least from an opportunity perspective) - Russell I can understand - didn't show much - but was he ever given a full game? I have to admit to being worried every time he was on the ground, but as a young bloke he must be thinking "I have come to Melbourne as a promising player, spent two years with little to show for it - new start needed. Mummy can I come home?"

Maybe its time Pagan stopped bluffing, trade Thornton and Russell, get something for them. Polak is close to going to richmond so there goes our back up on thornton, and Russell as much as i think he is useless we shouldnt let him walk away after putting 2 years and useing a high draft pick on him.
