FORMER Carlton coach Denis Pagan says revelations by star player Anthony Koutoufides that he was part of a group which lobbied to have him sacked were not new to him.

But Pagan said he was disappointed by Koutoufides' criticisms of his handling of players and of his game plan.

Koutoufides, the Blues skipper from 2004-06 who retired midway through this season after 278 AFL matches, has unleashed a barrage of criticism on Pagan in his new biography Kouta.

In extracts in Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper, Koutoufides said Pagan, who was sacked after a huge loss to Brisbane in round 16 this year, was unfair on players and had an outdated game plan, which the players did not believe in.

He said he and fellow senior players Lance Whitnall, Matthew Lappin and Nick Stevens met with club officials to try to have Pagan sacked last year.

Pagan said he knew of the move, but chose to ignore it in an effort to keep things "positive".

"I was aware of that. I just continued to control what I did," Pagan told Melbourne's SEN radio.

He said it would not have helped confronting Koutoufides, who he said never personally approached him to outline his criticisms.

"I thought it's not going to serve any purpose, let's be positive, let's go forward," he said.

"That's probably the disappointing thing, how positive I was with the group and to be criticised like that."

Pagan said he believed he had been hard but fair with his players and that he was "probably one of Anthony's greatest supporters".

He also suggested Koutoufides' criticism that his long-kicking game plan was outdated was shown to be unfounded when Geelong won this year's premiership, with the Cats and preliminary finalists Collingwood and the Kangaroos the longest kicking teams in the competition.

"Talk about long kicking, well, we tried a lot of things," Pagan said.

"It was (no) coincidence that three of the top four sides who finished this year on the ladder were one, three and two in long kicks.

"I don't know what he's crook on that about."

Pagan said criticism was inevitable given he led the club to wooden spoons in 2005 and 2006 and they came 15th this year.

But he said the Blues were now in good shape, with a lot of good young players and the addition of ex-West Coast star Chris Judd.

"All these young boys, the previous coaching panel have had a lot to do with their development," he said.

"Now it's at a stage where you put the cream on top and I'm sure Carlton will go forward in leaps and bounds."

Yer Pagan as much as i disliked Pagan as a coach he has been very classy throughout this whole situation.... it would have been a easy option for him to blame the loss of picks, unstable board etc. and then abuse kouta back but he kept his class and dignity which is a credit to Pagan

His handling of the situation has definitely increased my respect for him - if he is bitter, he certainly hasn't made it public.

well he is a very professional man, and I just agree with Kouta, he was never suited to coach Carlton. His game plan of long-kicking took to the players dislikings.

He is a good guy.

Good we got Ratten as he is the perfect man for the job. In the last 6 weeks, with the game plan he implemented, we started playing better footy. And also the players like Ratten much more than Pagan.

Whether you like Pagan or not I think he has handled himself really well when he was sacked and thereafter. I dont recall him being bitter or sh*t canning the players or admin. He was dealt a dud hand from day one and struggled from thereon.

It could be argued that he probably seen the writing on the wall and could prepare himself for the inevitable but he has shown character in the way he has handled himself.

You have to ask yourself if as Denis said all along he was all about getting Carlton back up the top, he didn't quit after learning that the players didn't want him as coach? I mean he knew that the club couldn't move forward with him as coach and the players hating him and his game plan.
Maybe he didn't quit because if he quit he wouldn't get the payout for his final year of his contract. Maybe after all Denis was all about Denis and not the Carlton footy club?

Spot on.

Kouta was a legend and Pago was a dud. I know where my allegiances go to.

Be that as it may You cannot doubt which man has the most class in this incident....Carey was an absolute champion as well so perhaps we should have sided with him when he screwed his best mates missus .

Kudos to Pagan for his handling of the whole situation. I'm afraid my estimate of Kouta the man has just been lowered.

Collingwood North and Geelong probably had players capable of handling the long kicking game...we obviously didn't other wise we would have ended up better than we did....you can't compare the second worst team in the comp to the top three or so...come on

Think Kouta was only partly right. The main problem with Denis imo was not the game plan but his attitude in general. He lacked awareness to how he affected the people around him and this curtailed severly his ability to reach the players.

This is where Kouta should have stuck his neck out and really made Denis aware very early on. Had he done this he may have created glory for himself, Denis and the Club. As it stand the Club may still reap glory but Kouta and Denis will be long gone.
