I'm a fan of Pagan and think his tactics for most of the year have been really good.

Last night what did annoy me however was the use of Gibbs in the last quarter. Our midfield was tired and we needed something different and I think throwing Gibbs into the centre and putting Whitnall down back could have given us a sniff.

Murphy never got thrown down back, so why is Gibbs playing 100% of games down back?? Gibbs was touted as the Jesus of midfielders and yet he's not given a chance for a quarter even the last when all the heat is out of the game and it becomes more of a game of attrition.

I'm confused... and please none of this making him learn a defensive side to his game... I'm sure he's proved he has that cause he's shown us the last few weeks he can be defensive and accountable.

pagan is teaching gibbs about dicipline i reckon i thought gibbs showed some promising signs last night pin point pasees on either foot. i think he will play another 3-4 games in the back then throw him in the midfield.

yes that was very frustrating to watch!!
No.1 draft pick for a back pocket ?? C'MON
release him!!

i think pagans protecting him from the bigger bodied midfielders, his a star and should be played on the ball!

Agree, very frustrating. Also, if Gibbs is down back he should be a loose half back flanker with permission to be creative snd set up the play, not as a defensive fullback. It is a waste of his skills, which are better than almost anyone in our side.

Matthews was the one that pushed Johnson to the goal square (dragging Gibbs in the process). I don't mind Gibbs off half back. He's a superb user of the footy and has plenty of class. You're right about our midfield though. It certainly ran out of legs.

yep. a mistake to play him back there for most of the game. i thought he did a good job on him for most of the game, but i'm sure we didn't recruit him to play full back.

Hey guys,

Interesting scenario this is because we've got a similar situation with Deledio where he's been playing in the backline to learn the defensive side of the game. Would Pagan be doing the same with Bryce?

Gibbs doesn't have the body to play full games in the midfield, and our depth is so poor we need him on the ground at all times. So he has to play on the backline right now.

If we had 2 extra midfielders, we could throw him for bursts in the middle, then rest him on the bench. But we don't. I still think he should have gone in last night though - you leave it all on the table when a possible win is in the air.

Still, we threw Murphy straight in last year, and he got injured. Lets just nurse Gibbs through this year, let him get a taste down back, then step things up once he bulks up over the offseason.

Agree completely. And I'd like to note, on what I've seen so far, Gibbs is currently much more comfortable at HB than he is through the middle. Playing him at FB on Johnson in the last wasn't smart - it'll help Gibbs development but not worth it at the detriment of the team.

Gibbs has actually requested to play in the back line. He and Pagan both feel it is the best place to learn the pace of the game. I though he did extremely well last night: for 3/4 he was well and trully on top of Johnson, it was only when our midfield got tired did Johnson get the ball through excellent delivery.

I know Gibbs will play in the centre, but we must and I mean must be cautious with to much phsysical exposure in such a short time frame. It may please the mob now but the long term effects could be very damaging.

Rather than focusing on this, we should be rejoicing in the fact the boys are playing very positive football. This is after all what we have been asking for.

Pagan IS a dud but no defender could have stopped the delivery to Johnson

Why are some people so thick? PLEASE explain to me how any other defender could have got a spoil in.

They got perfect delivery and they had an open forward line; every defender will be beaten in that situation if the delivery is good.

Yes- as he did with Walker. Most clubs put their best ball users into defence to bring the ball out with precision.

Agree but why not Murphy? Why has he been thrown straight into the middle? By no means am I saying that I would play him anywhere else but just asking the question.

It would be more to do with Murphys size, and not his skill level, that he hasn't been used out of defense. There aren't too many players at his height that play in the back half.

I think you have missed the point some have the opinion that Gibbs could of been used better in the midfield than any one else trying to stop Johnson!

I'm just excited seeing the mop haired youngster giving his all. He will play in the centres but when is anyone's guess but he was very good down back yet again. Uses the ball well when he gets it and doesn't seem to panic.

Does anyone think he will play on Milne this week or will Pagan try him somewhere else?

What pagan has done with gibbs has to be commended people tend to forget he is bottom aged and only just turned 18 this kid will play 10+ years in the midfield lets not throw him in the deep end just yet let him get a feel for the pace of the game some things he does on the field looks all class and those two marks johnson took where unstoppable. People also tend to forget that murphy is almost 2 years older than gibbs so his body is not as developed.
